Alright i know that this machine will be turned on tommorow and if its gonna make a black hole and kill me, i want to know at least what was this thing designed to study.

debrief me on what this machine is made to do

The likelyhood that anyone on here actually understands the LHC is very small.

Anyone with a Physics degree or higher?

Otherwise, Wiki is your friend.

They had a risk assessment test placed on the thing and the likelihood of a black hole being formed is even lower than the thing creating an inter-dimensional portal which would allow people to glimse through to another part of the universe.

Not to mention experiments like this have been going on constantly with smaller devices, I think it's just religions shit stirring personally.

See vmax got it right...

Also to the OP, basically they are accelerating 2 protons to .9 lightspeed in opposite directions. When they collide them, they will collect the data, which should provide some clues to the creation of the universe. They are specifically hoping to find the elusive Higgs particle. Though Hawking is betting against them finding it. The chance for black hole creation is low and even if it did create one, it would be small and collapse in on its self in milliseconds.

The same shit that happens in the LHC also happens in the upper atmosphere when high-energy cosmic rays hit gas atoms, afaik we haven't been swallowed by a black hole yet. Go back to bed kids.

I think the hysteria is less about people believing that a blackhole will swallow the planet, and more about wanting the end of the Earth to be the French's fault.

Afaik they are only firing particles in 1 direction tomorrow, so nothing to worry about.
I'm actually quite exited about the whole LHC thing because if they actually find the higgs bosson that's a pretty big deal... bigger than the possible end of the world.

btw does anyone know at what time CET they fire it up? if the world actually ends I wanna go with style

I'm no physicist but even I can grasp the importance of the situation. The exact point where mass becomes energy, hidden dimensions, and the general understanding of physics period. Thats some awesome stuff, and could be the foundation to whole new branches of technology.

But alot of people don't care because it doesn't deep fry or sing on American Idol.

Although a few individuals have questioned the safety of the planned experiments in the media and through the courts, the consensus in the scientific community is that there is no basis for any conceivable threat from the LHC particle collisions.

In truth, no one knows what they are talking about. Allow me to elaborate.

When the atoms collide it will make a representation of my penis. A very small, elaborately designed instrument of mass destruction. Upon the creation of this "representation" my penis will ignite into a massive fireball, which will then consume the tunnel, the countries, and earth, to make a bigger "representation" of my penis. At which point the blast, so big, will then collapse. The collapsed energy will create a black penis "representation" which will within minutes suck in every single piece of matter in the known and unknown universe. Thus creating a massive black hole, which will... you guessed it... look like my penis.

To tie this up quickly, the massive black hole that is a representation of my massive penis will collect so much matter, that it will consume space itself. Thus nothing will remain for all eternity.

Hope that clears it up.

Srsly tho, I hope this fucker works. Maybe it will provide something in the future that can shut those fucking creationalist bastards up.

Unlikely to be an insta kill, there is a question about the existence of a time dilation effect that occurs.

Time would be slowed down for quite a large area around the black hole. And at some point outside of it when It's field of influence touches you, it would be like being frozen (and subsequently torn apart).

Well, I suppose you could observe this from the outside if you had the time to, but I would imagine the black hole's field of influence would move incredibly fast (think of it as a speeding tidal wave) and would overcome you before you could really see anything from the outside with some telescope apparatus of sorts. It would overtake our entire solar system in a few seconds...you could probably see chaos amongst the stars/systems around us before it hit, and then it would hit us like lightning.

An interesting question would be what would the effects of a a smaller black hole be and how they would appear to us.

everyone always talks about the mini black holes..but they are BS

What about the strangelets?
thats where the real danger is at imo :|

not that I think the world will end because of the LHC experiments anytime soon

If the strange matter hypothesis is correct and a strangelet comes in contact with a lump of ordinary matter such as Earth, it could convert the ordinary matter to strange matter.[citation needed] This "ice-nine" disaster scenario is as follows: one strangelet hits a nucleus, catalyzing its immediate conversion to strange matter. This liberates energy, producing a larger, more stable strangelet, which in turn hits another nucleus, catalyzing its conversion to strange matter. In the end, all the nuclei of all the atoms of Earth are converted, and Earth is reduced to a hot, large lump of strange matter.

This is not a concern for strangelets in cosmic rays because they are produced far from Earth and have had time to decay to their ground state, which is predicted by most models to be positively charged, so they are electrostatically repelled by nuclei, and would rarely merge with them [11][12]. But high-energy collisions could produce negatively charged strangelet states which live long enough to interact with the nuclei of ordinary matter [13].
