New to the forums (having nothing to do with the beta :) ), really curious about the exploring aspect of the game. I can't find much information on it, how much is known about how exploring is rewarded? Can we make and sell maps? Will there be treasure that is defended by puzzles and terrain rather than monsters? Will being the very first person to find something be rewarded in a unique way?

Anyway, really looking forward to this game, so far none of the standard MMORPGs have had the depth to interest me (I tried to love Shadowbane, I really did).

No, there will be a world map, so no point there.

monsters?

I highly doubt it but maybe, I don't know.

Yes, troughout Agon there are unique vendor who sell recipes, spells and armor. These vendors are supposed to be hard to find and finding them may give an adavantage over others.

That's all I think is known about this.
Exploring is a much bigger part of the game than in other current MMORPGs though.

Exploring will be more useful than in saaaay shadowbane where the map was plain but I have a hunch after a while once the world is pretty much covered explorers will turn into scouts...

Scouting is going to be key in DF...with no mini map someone is going to have to track the bad guys...or the good guys if you happen to be bad...wait is good/bad purely perspective? Hmm go ahead and ponder that.

There are hidden bits of treasure and lore all over the world that someone needs to find! I plan to be a lore hunter/treasure hunter. We don't know if they will have treasure hunting like Ultima Online, but I hope so. If not, there are ruins and temples filled with treasure waiting to be found, and chances are there are SEVERAL things that aren't on the map.

The devs promissed a lot of unmarked islands, so finding a pirate nest will be fun too :D

Oh yes yes yes yes!
Scouts on raiding parties and such will be a great help. Specially when the scout already know the terrain, seeing as how none of the places in the whole world will be identical. And if they are its either by pure accident or the voices in your head are whispering to you again.

I'm pretty sure that people who don't fully focus on exploring will not have seen the entire world after a year.

I'm sorry to burst a bubble here but all "secret" place will be found soon enough because there are 10k people on a server. And all these "secrets" will be on the internet also.
Being a pure explorer wont work, you may have acces to some things a week before others but the "secrets" will be known soon enough.

You obviously fail to grasp the concept of being an explorer. Being an explorer isn't about knowing where all the "secret" places are by browsing internet sites. Being an explorer is about actually visiting the places and seeing it with your own eyes.

You sound like one of those people that say they love travelling but all they end up doing is watch flyers about vacation resorts.

Well said.

Maybe, maybe not. It all depends on the scale of the world and people.
Eventually, majority of secret places will become common knowledge, however, how soon will that happen is another thing. And also, some secret places might be rather hard to get to, not due terrain but npc's or pvpers...

And remember that those old ruins could have been just plain old ruins one week, and being old ruins with a clan of goblins that is guarding a treasure hte next week.
They found that spot while wondering around to settle and hide the treasure.

That is another part of the game that will be truly epic.

Please don't comment on things you actually don't understand...you just make yourself look stupid

An example in a large MMO world like Darkfall you could find a map that reveals an area without the map you wouldn't have access to.This is how UO works in principle ...and it is very achievable.

Multiple people said in this thread that they planned on trying to find secrets and gain an advantage with it.
I was just warning them that they most likely wont have much to do in that case. They were the ones failing to grasp the concept of being an explrorer, and I wanted to warn them about it.

I look forward to exploring in the game.

I mean, 12 hours of running, just to get over the map in a straight line? That's a loooot of exploring for Athan!

The most important thing though is that exploring will not have 'ANY' limits. You can go to every location you want. There will be no invisible wall that you can not cross.

So you just thought that up out of the top of your head and use it to call me stupid?

You have no idea whether or not that is in the game so what are you talking about? Sure if that is really in the game that would be great (probably more dumb luck than exploring but whatever) but you have no idea how it works ingame. All we can go with is what the devs said, and following that I am most likely correct.

Be sure to quote them next time to avoid misunderstanding ;)

Did not see this comment before.

But I quote it for the truth it holds.

I spent days just trying to get to Mount Hyjal in WoW. I never actually got to it because they had put up an invisible wall. Even though I could see it all on YouTube, I wanted to see it with my own eyes.(I mainly played WoW because it is of course the Warcraft world and I wanted to see it all up close with better graphics).

And plus, like I said in my previous post, the world is fucking huge. It's a lot bigger then WoW, which is still extremely huge, so all of the "secrets" won't be out in weeks, they'll be out in months and some won't probably be out in years.

I can promise everyone that there will be at least one secret in the world of Agon that will remain a secret forever. (because I won't tell anyone about it)

If I ever find a secret ill just let be my own maybe even guard it and kill people that even get close. But that is crazy....

You could always hire mercenaries to help you out ^^

Wow, glad to see there is a fairly widespread interest in the exploring part of the game. Scouting and tracking your enemies to their base is an aspect I hadn't thought of, and one that sounds like a lot of fun. I also think map making could be implemented in a way to make it useful.

If spawns are on the move the way they are described, a good explorer good make a living selling maps of where the best mobs are at any given times. Not to mention maps of trainer locations and other useful locations that could be opened in game. Of course, I'm only hoping that they would allow us to create our own annotations on the map and then duplicate it to others.

All and all this game seems like the closest thing to my ideal since Shadowbane (and maybe a tale in the desert but in a different vein), can't wait to find out.
