So far not much has been said about this topic. Skill Decay seems like a good idea to stop people from becomeing overpowered gods. The one problem is if you ever get tired of that your doing and try something elce you lose a bit of the time you spent training your first skill. Here are a few ideas i came up with on Skill Decay.

First off skills should be grouped. Like melee, magic, range, exc. Whenever your training a skill the skills in its group decay much slower then others. Example: You get tired of useing an axe and switch to a sword. Your axe skill would decay about 50% slower then say your magic skill during the time you spend useing the sword.

Second skills need a safe cap. Meaning they will go down to a certain level and wont go down any lower. it should be about 40% your lvl in the skill. Example: Your spend months geting your mace skill to 80 then you deside to go craft for a long enuf for skilldecay to damage your skill in maces. Your mace skill would drop but only to lvl 32. That way you dont have to start all over from level 1 after spending months to get it up to 80. Its like rideing a bike. If you dont do it for years then try your guna be a little bad at it but you never completely forget how to do it.

Third skill decay should stop or be reduced when your not playing. If say you get hit by a hurricane or something that causes you not to beable to play darkfall for a long time you should not have to start all over and lose all your skills when you get back on.

I didn't read further than this. You don't seem to understand that skill decay caused by not practicing that certain skill is not a 'problem'. It is the whole purpose of skill decay. If you don't continue to use that particular skill, you will not be as good at it 2 weeks later. Same as anything in RL but simplified.

As long as your character doesn't start to fall apart if you just want to sit around and chat for awhile (like UO when stat degradation first came out) then I'm ok with it.

Yea i know im just posting a few idea i had on the subject. Not saying they should be in the game or anything. Just seeing what other people think.

If you read into it youl see we agree. However i dont think you should become a complete retard at something you where a master at a few weeks ageo lol. Thats all this is realy saying. Put a limit on how much the skill decays.

There is a limit, as you would have noticed if you read into the FAQs and past journals ;) Not a hard limit as such, but the fact that it takes a LONG time for skills to decay is enough.

Somewhere they said that skills will not decay while offline

it's a tricky one, because on the one hand you don't want to overly penalise people who are are eg: mainly caster-focused, but are trying to intensively train up their sword skill, but on the other hand, you have to decay the skills of people who only use certain skills very rarely. eg: i don't think you should be able to retain 99/100 level in all your skills just by using them all once a week.

it's a fine line.

Some people may want their skill points to decay all the way, so no

I remember reading that skill decay is slow, it doesn’t happen when your off line and it wont decay any further than 70 percent assuming you haven’t been training up new skills therefore reaching the soft cap. I’m sure the devs have put effort into making it so the system isn’t a big pain in the ass.

Edit – Shit, I’m having a hard time finding that info now. Take what I said with a grain of salt, sorry.

Does anyone know if its 'easier' to raise the skill again if you have lost some of it? compare to when you want to learn something from skratch.

I mean you really dont forget things that easily in RL, after awhile you get into it and you are back in no time. If you get what im saying here.

Totally new thread. Never discussed before!
I am so glad you brought this up because nobody has mentioned anything about this!

ok you can avoid wasting your time by either:
A) not playing this game
B) go ahead and start figuring what type of character you want to be and start planning what skills/spell types you want so you do not have to change ever. But then again you will probaly change so it doesn't matter.

Skills should decay to 0 for sure. Because using an axe is not the same as using a sword. If they had a cap (your example of 40%) everyone would just get every skill, spell, or w/e and level it to 100 and let it decay to 40. You would have every spell skill in the game at level 40, then the ones you wanted to use mainly at 100, but could still use other skills effectively. That is stupid

The more you play the less your skills will decay. The more you play the more skills you can have at 100.

Maybe the devs can impliment some form of emergency pause so your shit doesn't decay if you do get hit by a hurricane or something, just a thought, cause that would suck. Or you can be a man and train your shit again and be a bamf cause you just learned to play twice.

Decay is fine.

Decay rate should be lowered each rank you decay so maybe 100 to 99 decay will be a day (made up dont worry just proving a point) while decaying from 2 to 1 will take a month (in game maybe not sure )

Good point. I wonder if the devs thought about that one

Honestly I think it should take the same amount of time that it took you to get from 99 to 100 to get back to 99 from 100. Or even double it for decay.

I understand what you are trying to say. Im sure the devs have thought hard about skill decay and by the time beta is done we will have a system that will work.

I like your skill grouping idea. Reducing the decay speed of skills/spells of the same group makes sense. This way if you are lets saying trying to become somewhat of a pyromancer, you could lvl up your fireball and firewall and then take a break from those skills and use firewalk (yea im taking these skills from Diablo II haha)and still have your fireball and firewall fairly high, maybe only dropping afew points, compared to your swords skills which would be decaying much faster then the rest of your fire skills.

This way people wont be forced to spam fireball/lightning bolt/sword slash/etc over and over and over again for the next few weeks. I just cant help but think of this : http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=j_ekugPKqFw
