View Full Version : My MB died :(

So I get home from work to turn on my computer to upload an updated dxdiag to the beta app. Press the Power button, computer turns on then off in less than a second. So I did some trial and error with my CPU, PSU, Peripherals, Graphics card; but nothing came out of that. So then I looked at my motherboard for any possible burn marks.... an then I see it... 3 of the capacitors to the left of the Heat Sync on the MB had leaked at the top of the capacitor.:bang:

So that gives me an excuse to get a new MB and possibly a new CPU. I'm on the lookout, but if anyone knows any great combos or MB alone that have gotten some good reviews, please let me know. I'll be checking tomshardware.com to see whats new.

I always thought motherboard was abbreviated MOBO.

MB confused me. Does that mean your Megabytes died? What does that mean? Can you explain please?

I've always heard MB used for Meerbusch Germany. Are you saying that Russia nuked Meerbusch!? Wow, Putin is crazy.

MB is often short for motherboard, or main board. You can also just get a dribble tool (machining tool), cut a hole behind the HSF and solder on new capacitors... probably what I would do.

MOBO... sounds like HOBO...no good. Yeah I was lazy, i admit it.. too lazy to type MOBO.

As for the solder option, I did consider it but my current MOBO has lasted me about 3 years; its time to get a new one.

Editing post right now with specs...I lied.... i'm not. I dont have all the info memorized, I'll post it when I get home, unless I find an old dxgiag... found one.

Matriel's boyfriend died!!!!!!!! NO!

Isn't Matriel's boyfriend Surly?

Oh no! Surly is dead!

It must have been all those phone calls from French people like Viluin. It finally drove him over the edge : (

A moment of silence for Surly.

Look at my last post for updated system specs. If there are more specs you want to know, let me know.

Maybe consider keeping the video card if you're on a budget, and perhaps the RAM as well if it's DDR2, but otherwise just trash it and get a new comp imo.

Yeah I don't plan on buying new RAM (and it is DDR2) unless I need more to meet the required system specs. The video card will be the last thing I look at updating. I have been waiting so long for a reason to buy a Quad Core, I can finnaly get one... it will be nice.

Dual core>quad core for gaming. Games just aren't optimized for quad core just yet.

And I would definitely get more than 1 GB of RAM if you intend to play Darkfall. (Keep what you have though since it's DDR2.) MMOs are RAM hogs. Plus, it's pretty cheap.

Ah, thank you for the heads up, didn't realize that. I may just use the processor I have now. But I will upgrade my RAM.

Well ordered my new MB and RAM.

MOBO: ASUS P5N-E SLI LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 650i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131142)

RAM: Kingston 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134582&nm_mc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel&cm_mmc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel-_-Content-_-text-_-N82E16820134582)

If you are wondering why I picked out a motherboard with 2 PATA ports, its because I still have 2 PATA HDDs. I can't afford to upgrade my HDDs right now. But when I do there are 4 SATA slots available. I also had to go with an LGA775 as that is the current CPU I have.

Ill post my full computer spec once I get the board and RAM, and get the computer up and running.

how did it blow? was it a power surge? If so call your surge protector mfg, they usually have insurance polices to buyback whatever gets roasted. you might get a free upgrade!

Vladar

Not sure if it was a power surge or not, but more than likely. The issue is, when I bought my house, we had discovered that the last time the electricity was updated they didn't ground all of the outlets. So I'm sure the Power Strip mfg. wouldn't cover us if that was the case. This time I'll make sure I don't plug the strip into one of the outlets that are not grounded.

Not sure about the reviews on it but i have 3 computer running Msi neo boards and i never had a problem with them. Also if your going with a new
CPU look into AMD. I have used Intel most of my life until about 4 years ago
and i will never go back.

Vladar

The NEo has lasted me for 3 years or something like that, it has been great while I have had it. I know it wasn't the boards fault that it crapped out, it was an outside source.

As far as replacing the CPU and going with AMD. I have had an AMD CPU and MOBO in the past, didn't have any issues. Switched to Intel, and have not had any issues neither. So i'm happy for right now.

So I finnaly got my new MOBO and RAM to replace a previous MOBO that had 3 leaked capacitors.
I install everything, plug everything in. I turn it on, change the boot priority to CDROM 1st so I can install windows xp. I get to the point of formating one of the partitions I had made, I walk away for a bit to take a shower, come back and notice that my computer is off. I press the power button, and the computer does not turn on at all (MOBO LED is on). So I start removing hardware to determine if my RAM was DOA , checked all the capacitors on the MOBO, unplugged everything except the CPU, CPU fan, power to MOBO, and Graphics card. So all that is left is the PSU, so I brought my computer into work today to switch out the PSU, and everything runs fine now. So whatever destroyed my MOBO also took out my PSU...its to bad. I have to settle for using a 400W for now. Ah well, hopefully nothing else turns up.
