I believe the 8 hour trek to walk across is accurate. It's one of the biggest land masses I've ever heard of for an MMORPG, definitely bigger than any game I'm familiar with on the market right now besides possibly EVE Online. Also, since all of the waterways aren't just for show because of naval combat, there's quite a lot more area where action can take place.

Very large to say the least.

As for the size of the ocean. We know that it takes 4 hours to get to the edge of the map from land via ship. It takes about 12 hours to reach the edges of land via mount. Ships, in general, are faster than mounts...
So my fuzzy math says the ocean will be huge..
The sea will be massive as well!!

the only thing im worried about along with other people is that fact that if your looking for a fight it could be hard to find one at times.... Also dont get stuck in the woods without the ability to recall or run back...

it sounds like the devs put a lot of detail into the world building and didn't just generate "space" between important places. I can't wait to explore - its gonna be like poppin my MMO cherry again.

well if it takes 8 hours to walk in a straight line from one end to the other then it will probably takes weeks to trek across the whole landmass.

I'd feel better if we had an actual number of square km or something. I mean, if the game is coming out within the next 4 months, the world should be pretty much done by now unless you go the Warhammer route and cut some of it just before release (sorry, I just had to say that).
I remember how in WoW a flight from Silithus to Darnassus takes about 16 mins real time. On foot, unmounted, it would take a heck of a lot longer. And that's flight, though not in a straight line, but still significantly faster than huffing it on foot. And that's just one continent out of 3, soon to be 4. So how does Darkfall compare to that? Still larger? Twice as large, or just slightly larger?
So like I said before, we know nothing about the game. We know it's large, but how large exactly when you consider the running/riding speed? WoW suddently became tiny once you got your epic mount, will Darkfall feel the same?

It's MUCH bigger than WoW. Shit, it would take like 20 mins to ride from Tanaris to Winterspring. And Agon is not a vertically stretched continent like kalimdor (or wahtever it was called in WoW).
The fact is that we don't really exactly how large it is. They haven't given any real specifics. So people who say shit like "I heard it's twice as big as vanguard", "I heard it's 4x bigger than WoW" are talking out of their asses.
Anyway, I'd like to see it compared to AC1's Dereth. That world was HUGE. At least 10 times bigger than WoW's, probably more.

Another thing that has to be considered is not only the large central land mass which the 8 hr figure comes from, but the sub continents/islands as well...all of the water area for ships...add in all the underground/dungeon areas...then add in everything that is underwater too...all of it is explorable!

the thing that makes game maps like AC1 and hopefully darkfalls maps HUGE is the free roam aspect.
WoW's map is actually pretty small. sure it 'looks' big. but ALOt of that landmass is actually unusuable its all fenced in and the zones themselves are pretty small ontop of that.
the thing that made the game map big in AC and will hopefully make the map big in Darkfall is that you can use pretty much every inch of land. therefor you effectively fit alot more content and room in something that has the same 'landmass' as something thats 20% 'Fences' like wow.
add ontop of that that the actual landmass itself is also alot larger or is atleast promissed to be.

You'll get "hot spots" quickly arise for the folks who want to hack limbs off all day trust me. In most games where the pvp is free for all you get certain areas where folk gather. Don't forget the siege warfare too. I think we'll be seeing a hell of a lot of that. Forumfall's players are mean and nasty :P

The overall world has 97 cities, towns and villages with anywhere from a few kilometers to over 10 kilometers distance to the nearest build point.
W.o.W. by comparison has only 6 (or is it 8?) Cities and 20-30 towns and villages. There is as little as a few hundred meters to a few kilometers between W.o.W. settlements. Overall I think you could fit the entire World of Warcraft's landmasses on the main continent of Agon.
Darkfall's mountains are also massive. At least one mountain range stretches over 2 kilometers into the sky. Plus there are underground areas that put anything W.o.W. has to complete shame. Tho the underground areas do not connect to other underground areas in an underdark type of network as people had hoped. But who knows. Perhaps one of the future expansions will introduce a deeper, more intricate, underground map where cities or towns may be built and have a number of tunnels and caverns connecting them in a network.
There are also an unknown number of islands in Darkfall. Some of them several square kilometers in size. And, unlike W.o.W., Darkfall's islands are all accessible if you have the means to get out to them.
The four subcontinents are easily each as large as W.o.W.'s main continents. And with far more interesting land sculpting you just don't see in W.o.W. or any other game for that matter.
Darkfall's map is big. Bigger than any other land based game out there.

1/4 scale of the European theater, but that's still pretty damned big. Darkfall isn't that big, but there is a huge amount of open space to get lost in. Especially out at sea.

At least one mountain range stretches over 2 kilometers into the sky.
Nope, Tasos said the engine supports 500 metres above sea level. A 2km footprint for a mountain sounds about reasonable however.
We have absolutely no idea however. Adventurine is a tiny studio and building an entire map out of pure geometry takes alot of time. WoW has roughly 100 civilization points combined as well, with somewhere arround 1km between them in azeroth and arround 3km in outland.
These numbers seem large for traval time involved but keep in mind that all WoW characters run arround at 10kmph+ all the time.
The map scale has been decreasing during development too. Changing from "as large as germany" to "12 hours in a straight line on a mount" to "12 hours to cross the continent"

it takes 8 hours to WALK from one end of a subcontinent to the other. there are portals i believe, but only one to each subcont, and im sure those are going to be major gankfests. you can also ride a mount, take a boat, etc.
this claims to be the biggest world ever.

Which, assuming that walking inposes the same speed penalty over running as wow does(and from the trailer this does seem to be the case) 8 hours of walking would make make a subcontinent roughly the size of 2-3 wow zones considering how rocky all of them are. In other words, it won't be much larger then other mmo's.

Yeah that sure was a massive mmo in land mass.Even with a Flying mount it took for ever to travel and that was the only thing I liked about that game.
Now hasn't Battle ground Europe got a massive playing area I heard it was a 1/3 the size of europe.
I've Played Vanguard recently after a long break and it is amazing how much they have fixed that up.If Darkfall is twice as big as that game then I'm happy as like many people exploring places is what I like to do and vanguard had so much to do I still never completed alot of dungeons in that game.
The bigger the better I say.

Pretty sure its half scale, but its important to remember that only a small portion of Europe was detailed enough to be useful. Of course that 'small' portion was quite large, ranging from east of Cologne (Köln), Germany to west of Amiens, France. That's something like 400km or so IRL, so about 200km in game, or about 40 hours or so at a jog. Its probably larger now, as its been several years since I've looked.

My guesstimate would be that WoW's Azeroth is about the size of one of the 4 smaller continents assuming it takes 8 hours to run across the main landmass.
