I played Ultima Online back when you could steal from other players, loot bodies and houses, kill anyone who moved outside of town limits, punish players who were screwing around in dungeons, and truly have a great time playing a game.
From what I have read so far this looks like the game I have been searching for since they nerfed the rogue/pvp aspects of UO.
One big question, Can I take the items off of my slain opponent's body?

I think you will find that these boards are full with ex UO players like yourself, if anything Darkfall is more hardcore then UO was even at launch as it also will require fps skill and such.

When I read the reply FULL LOOT I was filled with an emotion that I don't have the words to describe. It is a mixture of excitement and wonderlust that I bring my mind back to the weeks leading up to me playing uo (over 10 years ago). I can only imagine how awesome this is going to be.
Last night I was having a conversation with a friend of mine about developing an MMO very much like what I have read so far. A hardcore game were we poke fun at those who play in games that keep "the little kid gloves" on, if you know what I mean.

The very first thing that happened to me when I logged into UO on launch day, being about 13 years old and not having any concept of what I was getting into, was some guy convincing me to kill him so he could remake his character and then calling the guards on me and looting all my stuff. Fantastic game.

I'm not exaggerating at all. He was literally right there on screen at the Sweet Dreams Inn. I remember asking "won't the guards come?" and he said "I won't call them." Ah man, I believed him. :D
*laughs* Oh my. Happy memories. Out of interest, what shard?
I probably aught to go and search for this, but it's just occurred to me now, was there ever a definitive answer on RP servers?
I really hope DF doesn't go down that route. I think the RPers and the Non Rpers both add to the world. I would rather not see it all splintering off.

I believe it was Atlantic at that time, since there were only 5 shards or so. Chesapeake didn't exist at launch, which is where I played next for a while. Then I moved on to Catskills for the RP community, but I'm not really into that kind of thing anymore.
I only ever played one shard: Siege Perilous.
After that environment every other game has been a disappointment :P
It's already been said that the boards are full of ex-UOers, and I think that's very true. It's also been pointed out elsewhere that this is not DF is not UO. But it definately carries much of the same spirit.

I started playing UO back in 97 as well, and I have been looking for a new home for a long time since then. I'm not too keen on the fps component of combat in this game, but if it involves the same level of skill and coordination that UO does, I should be ok.
However, UO back in the old days had a real sense of danger, and I have been looking for a game with that ever since the rules were changed. That is what has drawn me to EVE, although at this point I would prefer a fantasy environment.
The other thing I have been looking for is an MMO with skill based character development, not level based. I utterly despise level based character advancement, and could easily write a very lengthy essay explaining why. That is another reason why I finally gravitated to EVE - but I'd gladly give up EVE to play a truly hard core, fun fantasy mmo with skill based character development.
So I guess here is where the rubber meets the road. Will Darkfall be everything I hope it will be? I guess I'm going to find out shortly... :D

To this day I when I meet up with some of my old buddies who played UO with me back in the day (pre nerf), we still somtimes swap UO stories over a beers and cigars.. It would be great if DF can re-capture some of that old school new-frontier nostalgia UO had..

I just miss the thieving from UO...stalking a guy who you know owns a boat off shore for an hour or two, to find that perfect moment to steal his boat key which he only carries to unlock his vessel....then waiting for him to panic and go to grab his second key out of the bank only to get that one off him as he tries to beat you back to the boat.

And to please you even more, the inventory is exactly the same as the UO one. You can sort things the way you want...it provides an awesome feeling when you loot. I don't why but it's so different to have to drag items from a corpse rather than just having to click on the little inventory slot to pick the item up.

One of the funniest memories I have of UO is being over my old mans house and all of a sudden hearing a string of screams and cuss words from his office. When I walked in, he was logged into UO and was trying to fight of some uber theif/super PK who had somehow got a hold of a one of my old mans runes, and was teleporting onto his ship and stealing all his shit. Everytime he teleported in my dad was waiting for him, but the PK would simply gank him, steal more stuff, and teleport out of there. My old man was so feaking mad I thought he was going to turn green and start ripping his shirt off.. (Damn it still makes me laugh..!)

Don't get me wrong, I think UO is still a great game, and I haven't seen any other game out there that has the depth of game play that UO has. However, it lost that special sense of danger, and the game play experience became much less intense after Trammel was created. It will be fun to see if I experience any of that again with DfO.
What finally completely killed UO for me, just a few short weeks ago, was the absolutely abominable customer support provided by EA. I realize you can never tell the future, but at this point I plan to never buy another EA product again if I can possibly help it, and I intend to discourage anyone who asks from buying from EA as well.
A company that supports its products as poorly as EA does doesn't deserve anything but a horrific corporate death...

Yup, Trammel pretty much ruined such a wonderful game in many peoples opinions, including mine. At first it sounded like it would benefit the game because at first it just sounded like another location for houses, which at the time of Trammel's release, most servers needed that badly. However, the Trammel rule-set that came was what a lot of people disliked. No pking, no stealing, etc, was just making the game a game most of the players didn't want or like.

My friends and I quite often remember the good old days of UO, the days of trying to run to your house being stalked by 3 to 5 reds and laughing our heads off as one of us would be murdered and looted... to return as a posse to get our stuff back only to have us all murdered and looted again but the funniest part was having your corpse chopped up and spread across the road... ah how I miss it.:(

The only (now) fond memory I can recall at this point is mining in a cave near Trinsic (or maybe Minoc?) with some other n00b, and some guy in his loincloth running up to us, yelling "ALLAH!" and detonating a purple potion...

I played that first few days of SP, before those guys duped and put all the houses on Ice Island. I was one of the first people to legitimately have 50k in the first week. I was so pumped when they rolled out, I had the week off of school and work and it was an awesome start. Then they rolled back, and I stopped playing SP. {Funny thing about that story is that I played abyss (same physical server) for about two months leading up to that, while I wasn't causing havoc on Pacific.}
I still cannot believe they nerf'ed my favorite activity in the game to reduce server lag. I used to loot houses at least twice a week (if not twice a day). With GM stealth/snooping/hiding/Very High stealing, it wasn't hard to get that all important key/rune combo. But OSI/EA decided to limit the number of items in your house with the lock down system after the Waivers didn't work. (Basically you recycled your stuff for waivers that would give you rares. The reason it didn't work is because the rares were crap, and valueless because everyone had them...) I listened to and read all of the interviews from the developers and they never mentioned a problem with people stealing/pk'ing and looting houses, they only talked about server latency.
What is a thief to do after you go from being able to get 20k-500,000k worth of loot in one fell swoop, to only being able to grab an handful of black pearls, or a katana or whatever. A few days after the patch my guild cornered and killed a rival guild and dominated their "city" (we killed all of the wandering healers that were close and camped the nearest alter) I still only ended up with about 20k in loot all in all. That was when I knew I had to quit, I gave away both of my houses and all of my stuff, and logged out for the last time....
Seriously, my first house on Pacific was from a house deed that I looted the day I hit GM stealth 43k or whatever it was for a new deed, and I found a ton of other awesome stuff in that same house (black dye tub, full set of ranger Armour, 20k of each reg, 10k ingots) I mean if you can get that kind of loot from one action, why would you do anything else? And the RUSH, oh my god that day I had such a rush ALL DAY. I have never had a game experience like looting another player's house.
Oh look at me, I have gotten completely off subject and I am rambling. Have a great night.

Old school UO was a ton of fun, but it could also be as frustrating as hell if you were on the wrong end of the stick, which I usually was. I never had a house looted, in part just luck, and in part because I absolutely never carried my house rune with me anywhere. It stayed in the bank, and I only ever carried my key from the bank to my house, and back to the bank again.
For a time I thought that Trammel needed to be created, or the game wouldn't have survived, but I no longer think that. I think they could have found much more creative solutions to some of the serious game issues, without completely ripping all of the danger out of the game. Hopefully Darkfall will be able to maintain that same sense of danger, but also be able to avoid some of the serious problems that early UO was plagued by.

They made the issues themselves by introducing Trammel + later on - which ruined the game completely and forever - introducing AoS.

My 1st Uo house was a small wood and plaster south of Trinsic in the swamp right before the lost land xpac. My neighbor got my key and started looting my house hiden. I was a decent enough mage at the time so i lite the whole house up with fire feilds and he was cooking there for a bit and as he started to relize he wasnt leaving alive i blocked the door and got him with an e-bolt! That was a blast even got my key back!
On a separate occasion I was training my mage (after movin to the east yew woods) I some how was grey from what i was doing(magic resist training i think) anyhow a group of 3 total noobs walk by and see me grey and shout HES GREY GET HIM! LOL anyhow I paralyzed each one and expo para chained them to death all the while giving a stiff warning of grey mages in an rp fashion! That was the funniest ever.
My brother had all the luck he had a fresh noobie appear right next to him in moonglow and ask can you and I be a team! It was the funniet thing to watch chasing him around seeing his screams of help help not know the guards command and zinging him to death with a wand for like 20 mins!

She comes back with a few guildys and they attempt to drop me and i run back to the stable and grab my red dragon ohh so much fun I went back and kiled them all. Later on i check the guilds page and find out I single handedly disposed of an entire guild. It was all of them! 4 total members LOL

Yeah, it's been so long that I don't even think this is my first forum account here. I honestly don't remember the old one. Even if I did, I bet it's been wiped. Even if not, I didn't particularly use it.
And I played UO so long ago that I don't even recognize half the shit these people are talking about when they describe it. That stuff just wasn't implemented yet. Needless to say, i also left it before the stuff was implemented. I'm guessing none of it made the game any better, from what I'm reading. Not that I left because it was bad. I switched to player shards, and then got tired of the GM politics that always exists on them. And the fact that most of them severely overused GMing and were rules Hitlers.

My favorite memory in UO was when I first went PK. My chars name was FineSlut about a week of being red I got killed by Hellfire on Sonoma, was butt naked and decided to head to the Brit Mine to get some supplies from a smith if I could find one. To my luck there was one there, I asked him for a sword and some armor and he wouldn't give anything to me, said I would just kill him. So I started punching him to death, actually killed him to my surprise and started looting the items I needed to be able to survive, there was a key on him and it just so happen to fit into a near by smithy house! SCORE!
P.S. EA ruined UO not OSI, ya OSI's name may be attached while the burning and pillaging of UO was taking place, but they were just a sub company and most of the original crew of OSI had already left the company because of all the BS Strings EA was pulling from above their heads. They didn't want to ruin there own baby...

I think we all have to tone down our expectations a bit. I'm hoping DfO will be great fun, but for many of us UO was our first MMO, and it doesn't matter what the experience is, nothing will ever be as special as your first time.
I'm hoping, and actually expect, that DfO will be a much better game than UO was back then. I mean, full 3D, siege battles, vehicles, ship to ship combat, real world physics (?). It had better be a better game, or it is doomed.
But after so many mmo's, good and bad, or good for a short time, then bad, and after all the hype surrounding Dark Fall, and after seven (?) years, our expectations are much much higher, so it will be truly interesting to see how close the game comes to actually meeting those expectations.

UO was fun, played on Chessy early on, followed by Cats and the entire run of Abyss.
Abyss was a blast and I cant remember a better experience in an MMO than all my time on that server.

man, i can't wait for this game. i'm an old school UO player and have read a lot about Darkfall and it's really getting me excited. the freedom UO allowed was amazing, not found in any other MMO i've ever played. i even created my own profession, the bounty hunter, and other players would hire me to slay their enemies for gold. it rocked and i spent my days on east britannia road slicing through non-believers.. :)
if this game is what it should be i can't tell you guys how pumped i'll be. i'm tired of being forced to quest to level up. and to level period. that is annoying, linear and friggin lame. let me do what i want. if i want to fish all day and sell fish i'll do that. if i want to steal all day i can do that....
