View Full Version : Darkfall Status Update - December 9
Tasos
12-09-2003, 05:02 PM
We're in the process of a major upgrade to our client and server builds, incorporating new game logic and engine features that have been implemented recently. As a result we regrettably have to take a short break from our regular RPG Vault Darkfall peeks.

Good stuff. Really like the planetary system, a "small" detail that really makes the world seem alive, which IMO is important. Not just having a painted sky...
Anyhoo, keep up the good work =)

Nice! <3 these people, awesome work, I love the planetary system. Thats the feature I believed mmorpg's should have, an actual solar system. Will the planet be round? It must be large if it is because otherwise it will always seem like your running around a ball and you'll be able to see it.

Sweet. Did you guys read that they were expanding on the dwarven kingdom?? Finally maybe a glimpse at something other than the human world. 35 dungeons finished, and more being added... nice!! i had no idea that such serious progress had been made on the in-game environment. Props to RW! Thanks for the great report Tasos

Who honestly believes this statement, raise their hands.
Something just seems very odd here.
Either these guys are like blessed by heaven itself or something is amiss <_<
More words... please show some proof of these statements.
I fail to understand why the IGN peeks need to be discontinued. If all this great news is true than they should have loads of stuff to show in the weekly peeks.
I also fail to see how doing so only one time a week would hamper development in any way.

Cool...
Dont rush it, Id rather have 10 dungeons that are detailed, nice, few as possible stucks, fun to be in, than 100 creapy ones.
But it the dev feels that what they did is gona be cool, im only more happy and excited about the game.
Another note, I would honestly rather loose some... "cool features" in a game but have the game run smoothly on a "descent" computer(not super-top-of-the-line). And of course, as lag-free as possible. I think the game should be oriented around no slowdowns on DSL(asif noone in the world has faster than a DSL) that way, even if everyone has T1s, most of us can enjoy the game.
For those who have 56k and get the uh... new faster 56k connection, i sugest you switch to dsl for a few bucks more a month, its so worth it.
I dont want to sound like im dragging the past around, but when Ultima Online was designed, it was designed for a 28.8 modem, and untill "lag was implemented" into that game, a 56k ran the game SMOOOOTHLY. Of course the newer games have much much more info running back and forth from client to server, but I think that it would be nice if we see a game that can run on 56k(not to mention the abilities on faster connections)
Anyways, keep up the great work, im sure you guys will make a great game. Sounds like this dev team is more into designing a game that will be the best rather than milk a game quickly(like they did with earth and beyond, milkin it to the last drop)

open world builder.
Place rock1 here rock3 there palmGroup1 here ForestTreeGroup5 there.
Place houseOrk1 here place ....
.....
Save project.
Close world builder.
And you have another part of the map finished....No coding needed
Don't forget they already had 80% finished.
The major game systems (physics, combat system, basic AI, spawns, etc.) are up and running and are currently being tweaked, tuned and optimized.
Who says they did 35 dungeons this past weeks?
Maybe they have been busting out dungeons for months and more.
Maybe the dungeons are finished but they have zero npc's in them yet.
Dungeons can be made with a dungeon builder tool just like the world builder.
All objects can be used in multiple dungeons but with different textures (skins).
Maybe the dungeons all use the same building blocks and only use different textures?
Who knows how they handle entering dungeons. Maybe they have some sort of entrance that loads you into the dungeon....well place entrance placeholder on map can Be same code for every dungeon just change destination word for every dungeon et voila it loads you into the dungeon an artist made no extra programming per dungeon...
Frankly you know squad when they do or did something and how it looks.
I find it FUNNY that you think you are RIGHT cause you are clueless, probably have zero experience creating an mmorpg yourself and only look at other games and do a count on how many people work on it, what they had in release and base your opinion on that....
Darkfall Online was highly probably already being worked on ever before those gaming companies you think of were thinking about making the mmorpg they ALREADY released.
I could go on but i won't.
You and bigmac are just clueless people that don't look further as their minds can handle.
Ow and i have been on a Mmorpg project so don't get started....

woot!
I think I need to take more finals, good DF news comes out afterwards! That or maybe I should go sleep...
Anyway, nice to here some updates as to how things are going. =) Hopefully monster AI will be pretty decent in DF... I'm find myself kind of bored with MMOG genre. Characters getting some love is great to, they looked pretty sparse... shame to have such a beautiful interactive environment and only mediocore character art. =D
The world keeps sounding better and better... 35 hand designed dungeons! Sounds to me like DF is now in the polishing stage! Yay!

bigmac once again you open your mouth and prove your ignorance.
You can do EVERYTHING with a world builder. Ever use NWN toolset? You can slap together an area in like 5 min and its in the game with NO coding necessary. The tool-builder could easly have added in placable spawn points, sounds or whatever is needed can be put in a world builder and make no coding necessary.
Also the number of programmers does not matter. The quality of the programmers does. Some programmers can write 20 usable lines of code a day while others can write 1000+ a day, its about skill not numbers. SB threw programmers at the game and it sucks, they were crappy programmers.
Also you dont know what the difference between "in game art" and regular art. They could be using exporters that make no coding necessary to put the art in the game. Or they could have written their own modeling software a long time ago that creates art and dumps it right into the game, although i doubt this and would go with option one.
Your posts continually prove 2 things: 1) you have no idea what programming is and how tools can be used to cut down on coding/building time. 2) You are ignorant and dont think much.
Think before you post.

Pretty......
I like planetary things and stuff.......
One last thing, while you are fine-tuning everything, could you please make a "gore-splatter function" that at the highest level of gore you can, I dunno, hit sombody in the head with an axe and skull and brain chuncks will fly everywhere and possibly even hit you in the face and then slide down the screen, or other rewarding things. I like my games nice and messy. On a similar note, when you hit sombody in the chest with an axe, there should be a clear mark from it, not just an initial spurt of blood and then them looking fine again. That is dumb and sb like. Anyway, I'm ranting, sorry. Nice work, devs, you guys are cool.

Yes. That is why they made the "World builder" - program in the first place. They didn't get it from some superstore; they had to make it for themselves with the purpose of saving time coding/programing everything from scratch. By investing the time to create the world builder, they now seem to have earned some by using it : And that should be great news for fans.
We're here to give these guys feedback, ideas and support because we love this game idea. There are alot of ways for the community to help out in the process, but i don't recall that complaining and talking down on the developers would do much good. Constructive critisism is however allowed, and I think the devs appriciate our interest and thoughts concerning how the game should be. There is no point in getting frustrated and angry because the devs are telling the community that everything is in fact going very well. That is good news. That is why we all are telling them "way to go!", instead of calling them liers.

If you think games are all about the graphics you are missing the point of an MMO in a BIG way.
MMOs are about creating a living breathing world. Now i have not played lineage but i imagine that is has alot of features that give players the freedom to create their own world. Like UO did when it opened. That is what games are about, not shiny graphics and super weapons of faggotry.

You know for a game to work for any amount of time. Espcially an extended period of time the game needs depth and an absorbing environment. You want ambiance, you want that brook to babble audibly and visually if your near it but you also want a lunar cycle that matters. Im sure everyone remember U6 and UO where lunar cycles were there. In UO2 the promised an even bigger role. It had seemed to me though that most MMPORPG were out there with gimmics and repetitive game play to get players to play their game over the competition and try to get them to have a vested interest in staying because you have a level 65 whatever.
To an extent you want players to have a vested interest for strictly a valid business model. BUT you want a real game. One that absorbs you and you actually forget about what is going on IRL and be in the game. You want a good acid trip or a vacation from bills and the grind at work. And I think DF gets that. They are building a truly dynamic STABLE world for us to enjoy and I am quite impressed with the level of detail they are going to in order to bring that to us.
And Im sure we have an intelligent audience here that can see through the repackaged, redesigned, Same old - Same Old with no real thought to innovation. Not going to say any names here as I find most of the new stuff coming out falls into this category. And comparetively DF Devs are like Microsoft Devs. As much as people hate microsoft the company Innovates. It is committed to IMPROVING not just redesigning or making an OS prettier. Because of this they have alot of issues but I look at a Microsoft product and Im not gonna hestitate to install it on my system. (AC was not developed by microsoft, this is your cease and desist for talking about that game) Microsoft works. And it looks like with the dedicated and appearantly psychic and empathic team developing Darkfall were looking at something absolutely unheard of since UO. A ground breaking new MMPORPG that is not just repackaged with newer graphics but is actually an improvement on both gameplay and everything MMPORPGs are suppsed to do. In short, what is darkfall to me? It is a new PvP-MMPORPG:Evolved. Its a new world. Its a game that actually planned on and came up valid solutions to the problems that plague this entire gaming genre on the market today.

LOL :D after it will be released, we will all end up, divorcing our wifes and breaking up with our girlfriends.....just kidding......maybe they got to play DF along with us :) .....at least that would be a lot of relief :P .....dont you think?
Greets from Athens. ;)
ps: as a proud Greek living in Athens, I am double anxious for DF to be released...I' ve tried to get enlisted for beta tryouts, but link doesn't seem to work :( ....any suggestions ????
Q. When is beta? How do I get into beta?
A. Darkfall began closed technical beta in late 2003, there is currently no date for open beta. Positive contributions to the community are most welcome and might in some circumstances increase your chance for the beta selection process, but expect to see a sign up form.
Q. Why don't the beta links work?!
A. They will be activated when the date for beta gets closer, the devs simply didn't want to redesign the site when this occured so put the links in ahead of time.
Does that help any Argonaut?
