View Full Version : Why would it take days for the webpage to cut over?

I mean, vmware the sucker. Install ESX and core controller on a fast box (quad core with at least 16 gig's of ram) and then mount image on new box.

Convert old server IIS or apache to vmware image (1 hour max)
push image to new box. (1 hour)

Should take ohhhh 3 hours max.

Same ip schema, same sid, same domain. And the cut over takes less than 15 min.

unplug cat from old box, plug cat in new box.

Bam-mo, done.

If youre worried about hardware compatability. Use acronis with ->universal restore.<- (alhtough vmware's utility covers hardware migrations as well) I have cut over exchange and SQL servers from scsi to sata drives with that and never a hitch, ever.
Create the acronis image, then follow instructions above. If you have problems (which you won't) then use your acronis image as your backup.

either way, getter done son.

This terminology, "cut over", makes no sense to me... but moving a linux webserver seems like it could be done that way pretty fast depending on what you're servicing.

What exactly are you bitching about? Who's taking down a site for a few days to change a webserver?

the games update page says thier webpage is going to be moving to a better server. And they make it sound like a painstaking process.

And it doens't matter if it's linux or windows. Vmware and Acronis support BOTH os's very well.

Shoot with acronis and universal restore, you can take an os built on scsi and port it to a server that uses sata. IT's that good and solid as a product.

Just remember to use universal restore. And force the drivers. (option)

Oh shut up and stop your whining!

They made note of something because it "may" be noticed by some. If its not a problem then don't bitch! If it is a problem, you were warned, so... Don't bitch!

Probably doing it slowly so there's no downtime. This happens pretty regularly on highly-used websites.

Duh?
