View Full Version : Why I don't make a good student

So, I recently read a blog entry of a past Economics professor; essentially he fell into the old broken window fallacy, and I very lightly reprimanded his point of view. I also went on a bit about how National debt is a bit irrelevant because our money system is one such that we just roll it over anyway. Apparently, he didn't take kindly to my words, and he wrote me directly saying...

"If you wonder why I deleted your comment, it’s because you don’t know what you are talking about. If you are going to toss phrases out criticizing me, at least get a clue about the basics of stabilization policy. The fallacy you cited simply doesn’t apply in the framework used for this type of analysis (yeah, I know, 99% of the economists commit this fallacy and the ones you listen to are right…)

I don’t have time to explain why each time (and it gets into a back and forth thing I don’t want to get in to in comments since this takes way, way too much time already and it confuses people even more), so if it happens again, i.e. if you are criticizing me and a comment gets deleted, it’s because I thought it was without any foundation (i.e. made no sense) and saw no reason to allow a baseless criticism to stand for others to read. If it’s valid, that’s fine, but not when it’s from lack of understanding. If I make a mistake, so be it, but when I do it I’m pretty darn sure I’m right (as this time).

Sometimes people react in ways that I’d rather not have in comments after these emails, so I’ll hold comments for moderation temporarily. If things are normal, no problem, I’ll lift it quickly. Experience says this is best."

I'm not entirely sure what he is talking about when he mentioned "the ones" I listen to; as I had to hear his lectures going through college. Perhaps, he was patting himself on the back. Anyway, I didn't know professor's could be so sensitive.

To make a good student you need the following:
35 liters of water, 20 kilos of carbon, 4 liters of ammonia, 1.5 kilos of lime, phosphorus 800 grams, niter 250 grams, magnesium, manganese 1.5 grams, iron 5 grams, silicon 3 grams.

And a transmutation circle.

I wouldn't be too bothered about it, my dad moderates a site full of these professors and writers who are supposed to be some of the most clever people around but apparently the say the most idiotic things just because they're on the internet, anymosity is a wonderful and annoying thing really.

plus in nearly ALL of my experiences unless they are actually directly from the field they teach in ( then they actually seem to be alright for some reason ) nearly EVERY teacher I have ever met acts like a completely arrogant bastard and it amazes me sometimes how they even keep their jobs with the way they act because they either teach you something they believe is right even though it might be wrong and if you disagree with it then they don't teach you at all.

Which leads me to what I've said about the education system before, it's pretty much a place where all you have to do is say yes to everything in order to get good grades, probably why I got such poor grades from the start because I wasn't willing to listen to bullshit.

Madrandomize: you forgot the cobalt. The person would be dead within a week or less without that one enzyme that contains cobalt at its center. Wish I could remember what it did. There's also a lack of a handful of other minerals like copper and zinc, along with things like iodine.

On-topic: thanks for posting this Vanno. I haven't taken an econ course yet (I'll probably take one in the spring; this semester the only lecture for the course I'd be taking was from 7:00-10:00 PM once a week) and so I hadn't heard of the broken window fallacy. Just googled it and learned about it.

It's <10 mg as I recall. It's also bound up in complex organic molecules that would be hell to isolate and break down.

It wouldnt work anyways (others have tried but failed) so instead of a good student you would have a nice piece of meat to roast on fire ,which is also good.I would also add salt, pepper and lemon after that.Yummy!

You are in for a treat with Economics. You go from micro, which is the Economics of making sense and practical application, to macro, which is something completely different. Likewise, I’m not sure if there is a faculty with a bigger inferiority complex than the one you'll find in your Economics department.

This course is exclusively microeconomics. I'll probably take a macroeconomics course at some point though.

And yes, my dad has told me that I'll probably enjoy econ. It's a pity I couldn't take it this semester.

Since we don't know anything about the preceding exchange of arguments, we really have no grounds for knowing whether his response was reasonable or not.
That being said: academia is a "cut-throat" world of vain, self-righteous individuals who will do and say most anything to achieve dominance or preeminence over and amongst their peers. Kind of like Forumfall - only more intelligent.. (generally speaking).

We don't usually seek to achieve dominance over one another. We're a clean, industrious people.

There isn't a whole lot to report, essentially, a statement was made that wars either have either a zero sum, or non negative impact on the Economy, and I maintained that there is a net loss, in terms of valuation of human life, opportunity cost, and would have probably gone into currency devaluation as well, if a fit was not thrown.

That's the biggest problem with higher education. PhD's that refuse to look at anything but the way they think and they control the next wave of Phd's who have to suck their balls and nut cup the current arguments to get their own Phd's. I almost dare call it a self-defeating cycle.

Fair criticism, I suppose. However, I frequent the site, knowing I may have differences of view, and don't act indignant when my suspicion is justified. He almost seemed incensed that someone could have a difference of opinion.

Unfortunately, the stabilization policy statement really had nothing to do with the original blog entry, which inclines me to believe he was trying to justify his position ex post. At that rate, I don't see how the Iraq War fits in a stabilisation policy framework, unless you truly believe it is a fiscal stimulus, which is what I was objecting to. I've found that arguing with teachers is extremely counterproductive but can be therapeutic. Problem being is even if you're dead right, you still sound like a asshole. If you're wrong, its downright embarrassing. But hell its college, professors need to grow a pair if they're deleting any arguments. If you were so misinformed, wouldn't your argument be that much easier to counter?

I duno about you but the reason that I'm not a good student is because i am smarter than my teachers.

I don't know if I suffered from the same affliction, but I did tend to point out things that seem lacking and ask for clarification when weren’t clear to me.

In doing this, it essentially requires a professor to rephrase, expound, or defend. Often, it seems that some rather just go on with the lecture, as planned, than justify their teachings to those that actually make their livelihood possible.

In that respect, I'm not sure the issues is of unintelligent professors as much as disinterested teachers. A lot of these folks teach courses well bellow their level of formal education in the subject, and I can understand how it might seem banal to them. However, if they regret their selection, to engage in an enterprise of instruction, the consumer shouldn't be forced to accompany them in misery.

That is a university for you. I once took an advanced math course with a french prof that kept saying "perl" every time they meant parallel. About two months into the course I figured out what she was saying and lectures past suddenly made sense.

She also called the cauchy (pronounced cow-sch) equations the "coochy" equations. It made me laugh every time, and she had no idea why.

I have had plenty of asian teachers for comp sci classes, and they are worst. One asian teacher kept saying instant-shit every time he meant to say initiate. Or the popular fuck-chin when function should be said. Fun times.

Isn't a basic way to determine if war will be a fiscal stimulus just to check if there is high unemployment and the war effort will give a large number of new jobs? If yes, it will probably be a stimulus, if no, it probably won't (although it might not necessarily be a detriment)? I realize it's a very broad statement and that there would be exceptions galore, but this seems like a pretty reasonable assumption. It also deals with the broken window fallacy issue as well, because unlike in that, where the money given to the glazier could have been given to someone else, here the work (equivalent to said money) of those employed by the war effort did not exist in any form before.

This is of course coming from someone with no education in economics and who therefore has no credentials to back up his assumption.

I have had plenty of asian teachers for comp sci classes, and they are worst. One asian teacher kept saying instant-shit every time he meant to say initiate. Or the popular fuck-chin when function should be said. Fun times.

I thought they taught about parallel lines in middle school.

ZING!

I considered that as well, but then it occurred to me that he could have been talking about, for example, vector calculus. Though looking up these equations he's referring to, it doesn't appear to be that...now I'm curious what class he was taking, heh.

You never get rid of parallel. It just gets harder. And to answer your question, I go to the university of Nebraska for their great computer science program. I am also getting Mathematics and English degress. The sad part, is I will be 1 credit hour short of graduating this year WITH all of those degrees.

Triple major or did you just have 2 minors?

And yes, I understand how parallel lines pretty much don't go away ever, unless you're branching off into things like sets, relations, and groups. If you've got some level of analytic geometry sticking around, the little bastards are still there.

All majors. They require 125 credit hours to graduate, and I will have 124 after this year. I double hit a lot of areas though, math and cse overlap so much that getting one major basically means you are close to getting the other.

EDIT: I should also mention that I am very close to Geology and Sociology minors as well haha. If I have to go another semester I will probably grab those because I can.

Wait, all 3 and it's only 125 credit hours? And one of them is English (and therefore has practically no overlap with the others)? I guess I don't understand how that works. I have to do 16 hours of gen ed, 30 hours of electives, and then 74 hours in my major, for a total of 120 hours. Even deeming comp sci to be completely equivalent to math, I don't see how you could get all that you need for a major in English within 35 hours (by adding in those extra 5 and then removing all your electives). Maybe your school's hour system works a bit differently from mine though.

Let me break it down for you.

First of all, I tested out of a shit ton of math classes comming into college. That reduced a lot of math that I had to take, but doesn't count towards your major.

I took 4 years of high school spanish, so I didn't have to take 4 semesters worth in college. Again, it cut down on my classes, but didn't count towards my major.

In order to get a cse degree, you have to take enough math to get a minor automatically, with 5 additional classes to a major. 3 of those 5 additional classes double hit with computer science.

The majority of my general ed was filled with English courses. English courses are an awesome substitute to almost every gen ed class because they are so versatile. A couple of substitution forms and I was well on my way to an English major.

Also, other gen ed courses were already covered in my cse degree (math, natural sciences, etc). The gen ed that I couldn't hit with english I hit with sociology.

EDIT: In conclusion, I am a huge micromanager that thought out my career well in advance.

EDIT2: When I say they didn't count towards my major, I said that poorly. They counted towards my degrees, but not towards my 125 credit hour total.

Nah, I'm OK. I'm working on getting a master's in 5 years anyhow, which is basically the flip side of what you're doing.

I'm also in the Honors Gen Ed program, which has very specific requirements (so I couldn't substitute English classes galore for my gen ed if I wanted to.)

Technically this is a straw man. Just putting that out there. He never made the claim that you're claiming he made. He merely claimed that you went to a not-so-great college based solely on the fact that you were able to get 3 bachelor's degrees in 4 years, and it was at least a half-troll regardless.

Well, he is an underachiever, which is why it took him 125 credit hours to get a single degree. I was only showing that through a separate example :). I knew what he was trying to do. I just deployed my anti-Uzik troll weaponry.

Well, no, that's not necessarily an underachiever. At some schools with some majors that's just how the major requirements work. Like for me, I couldn't get 3 majors in 125 credit hours if one of them was chemistry. I could probably get 2 if I sacrificed all my electives (I have to take quite a bit of math as a chem major, so that would be doable) but 3 would simply not be possible.

And you should note that the straw man is one of the quintessential logical fallacies, and it makes you look pretty foolish if you use it in an actual argument, even against a troll.

It's most likely possible. UNL is fairly well known as a tough school. As I said, I just had an idea of exactly what I wanted to do before college even started and planned accordingly. Double and tripple hitting majors isn't that hard if you plan ahead.

Interesting.
The following will almost certainly be boring for all but Killuminati:
I'm gonna be exiled from your end of campus as a chem major though. Though admittedly I'm contemplating an econ minor, as I've found from what little I've discussed with my dad (who was a forestry major but was encouraged to be an econ major by his econ prof) that I understand and somewhat like econ. Might end up being a chem major with a math and econ minor, we'll see. Didn't want to take the damn 7:00 PM-10:00 PM lecture on Tuesdays for the honors microecon course though, especially as a commuter.

2 basic questions:
Are you honors in gen ed? (probly not since you weren't at the June 23-24 orientation but still possible)
What're you taking this semester? I'm taking:
HNRS 110
CHEM 212
MATH 215

Nah, you were genuinely upset and tried to pull some internet badassery by showing you are somehow better IRL than myself.

Unfortunately, we all know that saying "I'm better IRL!" is actually asshattery, instead of badassery.

Especially seeing as you are obviously no better than myself.

Regardless, you still don't understand. For my major, I needed 125+ credits to graduate. As a Management Information Systems major, my courses did not allow me to stray into other areas.

But even if it had, I would still need far more than 125 credits to have a double major. Why? Because there are going to be a number of classes for the other major that fall outside of MIS.

Do you get it now? Maybe at your school 125 credits = 3 majors, but at mine, you would have needed closer to 200.

I'm not quite sure if I'd necessarily call triple majoring "wise." I mean yes, it looks better on a résumé to have 3 majors, but you miss out on a lot of the "wing spreading" if you will that college offers. Or maybe I've just bought into hype like I did with IB, who knows?

No, I can genuinely troll when I feel like it. The whole Uzik still lives at home bit is troll gold, and it never ceases to get a reaction out of you, why do you think I respond to all your trolls that way?

@Alfar: I want to do a lot of things with my life. I want to write and to do logics programming. The latter I am already apart of, and make part time about as much as a normal graduate makes full time (in a year). The writing part was important to me since I want to eventually write fiction.

My computer science focuses on theory, which is where the math hit in most areas. Plus, what you take in college makes no difference. If you get that piece of paper, you are golden. I basically do what full time programmers do currently, only I will make much more once I get that magical piece of paper.

You know, normally you might be right. But let's look at a few things.

1. You live in a high cost of living area. I live in a low cost of living area. This is the most substantial thing you have to remember.

2. I already have a job that is certain for after I graduate at an up and comming company. It is already near the top of the industry that its in after only 7 years. They are very picky and only hire the best, and as a result we get paid 6 digits+ here. They are so picky, that it took them over 6 months to hire a programmer (the new one starts Monday). I only got an internship here because I was the first one to ever ask. Luckily I have proved myself enough to get a job after.

3. Do you even want to know my life story? I am sparing you the details for a reason. I don't make threads on here with the topic of my life circumstances as you have.

4. Maybe your company has no morals, but mine does. They wouldn't replace and haven't replaced programmers for cheaper ones. In fact, as I said, they pay their programmers here very generously. The yearly growth of this company is substantial, and they pass on a good portion of it to the employees.

5. I will be making a ton a year after I graduate, and that is the starting point. Will I make my own company someday? Perhaps. Will I get offered something better? Maybe. Will this company be sold for millions of dollars like the previous one the president created and will I make a huge profit from that? Could be. Who knows? I have left myself tons of life options. Also, look up JDE Design Studio. I was in that (which few people are), and so my name is already in all the big companies.

As far as by 25 goes, compared to areas, I think I will be pretty well off. 25? I will have a great house in this area before then. I already have a fairly nice savings. Haha, you can think what you want. Only one person on these forums knows who I work for, and its going to stay that way.

Digging through old posts you probably have enough to figure it out, actually. Depends on how good your google skills are.

EDIT: Yup, I just used two pieces of information that I have stated in numerous posts on this forum and the second result was the company I work for.

EDIT2: I will mail 20 bucks to the first person that PMs me the correct company...haha.

Yeh i realy don't care enough to do that. I just don't like people making up these fabulous stories but aren't willing to back it up because someone might complain about them. I thought you were a programmer not a receptionist.

You know what Ultimo your fucking right, I used to respect forumfall and a lot of the older gamers because they were genuinely intelligent people that could argue their point to the latter, but frankly this gaming forum has turned into a worse version of the WoW forums where shitheads flame each other left and right, I don't like how pussified the mods have become lately either.

Right now I'm beginning to wonder if an open PvP game is really worth it because frankly, I don't want to play with shit heads like you lot in fact I don't want to even ASSOCIATE with most of you because you act like a bunch of ignorant whining little pissant wannabe gangsters who'll get the shit kicked out of them one day for being so cocky.

If even half of you really did play UO like you tout no wonder these games fucking failed because they wouldn't want to socialize with complete bastards like you part of what an MMORPG is all about is playing with other people all I see you lot boasting about is how you lot want to wtfpwn everyone and pretend to be a hardass which makes me laugh because your probably going to get ganked by the people who actually decide to be friends and team up together and become really skilled by doing so.

Is there some drug I can take to feel like this from time to time that doesn't have side effects such as gymnecomastia? I mean seriously. It would be awesome to be able to just dump all this angst out and then be free of it for a few months at a time.

Darktide should be a study in open PvP and asshattery.

Anyways, don't let my trolling destroy your faith in the forumfall. There are some decent people on these forums.

BTW. Ultimo makes a 6 figure salary, and I'm the King of Borneo.

Oh and Uzik I know there are decent people on this forum but when that only makes up about 5% of them it does make me wonder whether I even want to touch the game, generally I've found the whole sci-fi aspect of MMORPGs a lot more inviting because how open the settings are.

Seriously though, I wouldn't care if this game had everything I could ever want in a game if it has a shit community I'm not going to play it because that is part of what make an MMORPG, also I don't think you realize just HOW much 3D Artists and programmers can actually earn these days if they're in a successful company, you should go and do some research.

I would like to add an experience of mine to this thread. I signed up for law and economics this semester and was pretty excited about it. We got our first reading assignment a week early and I cracked the book yesterday. I immediately noticed that one of the two authors was from Berkely and thought "great, here we go." By page 10 I had already read a Keynes quote and a detailed argument for state-backed wealth redistribution. It wouldn't be so bad if it had been presented differently, but it was presented as though it were the only school of thought in existence :\

Thats how it is with highschool textbooks as well. Except they actually had some neoclassical sections in my book. Except the curriculum didn't go over those chapters.
