I think the current trend in gaming entertainment is not driven by passion.
Where as in years past video games were not seen as huge money makers but as labors of love. UO, and everquest are examples however you can go even farther back to the multiplayer domains (MUD's) where people invested years of their lives to create a world.
With the success of UO and Everquest a new group of people are looking at the gaming industry as a source of Mid-Term Economic investments. 3 to 5 years.
World of Warcraft of course I believe to be a labor of love on the part of Blizzard. It just happened to release in a time of huge growth in the industry and is the bar for all economists looking at the gaming industry.
Now however we are in a transition period in the industry. Cheap products with solid Intellectual Property rights used for the sole purpose of quick economic gains.
They all know that gamers want the next thing and through marketing have achieved the current generation of games. Vaguard, AoC, are the big names however many smaller games have released and enjoyed just as much success in the short term.
With that said. I think the next true game to release. One that is not pressured by investors and short term gains will reset the industry on the right path. Hopefully correcting the impact that investors have on the gaming community allowing the industry to mature and attract people look at gaming as a long term investment.
