View Full Version : Darkfall combat will be like savage 2 right?

Bought Savage 2 recently (was on sale for 10dollars on steam last week) and the combat in that is first person for ranged, go into 3rd person for melee, spells etc.
So this is how Darkfall combat will be right? just with alot more spells and weps to use obviously. Yes i know its different games, im on about the combat alone, not the fact that its a 20man server and a small map.
Really interesting to see if DF can pull off a lag free game, cos savage even though its a real smooth game (for me anyway) still gets the occasional lag which compltly fucks up ranged combat as you have to aim for ur targets.

IMO lagg will be issue in df. There will be always people with poor connections so rangers are screwed.

well we will just see what they have put into there server tech

I know DF devs say they have some new tech (didnt they?) which supposedly is a cluster of servers which is better or some crap.
But if this is true then how come major companies with all the big bucks havent come up with this `new server tech`... lets say Blizzard for example *hides from the hated word* (and no i never played the game, so be nice)
Surely money would get you new tech

No, Darkfall's combat is very different from Savage 2.
For one, we're positive there's no interrupt attack to break blocks. Two, in Savage there are no directional attacks. Three, ranged weapons probably won't be intentionally designed to suck.
The first two are at least confirmed by recent updates or movies, the last one is just a likelihood.

Ok yeh, with number two of your post. I remember devs saying that now. But how the fuck are you going to have directional attacks in melee? how would you AIM a strike with a sword? (unless you do a shitty Aoc, which has basically that)
I reckon the `aiming strikes` will be taken out and it will be like savage in that sense. But please, give ideas on how you think they would possible do aimed attacks

I hope Darkfall isn't anything near savage. If it is, I'm definetly going to search for a new MMO to jump ship to ASAP. Savage fucking sucks.

Blizzard haven't done it because they don't need it. EVE-online could benefit from it but they've stated that to implement dynamic cluster technology they'd have to recode most of their server technology which just isn't viable at this point.

What the hell do you mean "how will it be possible?"
Go play Mount & Blade man. If you make a wide sweeping attack you'll have an easier time hitting the enemy, but you can also hit your friend. If you make a downward slash or thrust attack you'll do more damage, but it's harder to land the hit on the enemy.
Practically every melee game I've played has directional attacks.

Well if someone has lag he will have a problem to play the game for sure. I hope that there won't be any lag issues for people with proper connections.

They already said about year ago or more, that they are making it so that lag won't be an issue.

Savage 2 is great. But its combat certainly isn't the right type/speed for Darkfall.

And you believe this why? Tasos has 0 credibility... especially when the info is that old. They are taking steps to reduce lag, but if they can get a siege to stay lag free for 5 minutes without reducing gfx to SNES quality I will be surprised.

Not true, since the server runs and maintains the world, and the end client isn't doing anything but rendering the game and sending input commands back to the server.
The devs have said if one person is slow / lagging it only affects them, no one else, cause the server just makes assumptions on their current pattern / movment should their connection be crappy.
Now for the cluster technology its just about giving the server control. Most games out there currently have the client figuring out damage, hit points, movement calculations etc, then sending it back to the server which just collects and manages the game. IE most mmorpg servers run just about the same as a fucking lan party setup.
Eve has a server cluster, but it was built / coded ages ago, so many new technologies have come out since its core coding and well its one of those cost vs rewards deal where it costs too much and has to little reward for Eve to do, however DF has the luxury of using all the new technology.
WoW/EQ2 etc still use zones, and instances which push you around to different servers. It's easier to manage code development, and it's typically cheaper you buy a server for each battlezone, you load the server code for battlezone on it, and then you have everyone entering battlezone1 go to that server, which has instances for each game. It's much similar to a virtualization setup in a data network.

Directional attacks are not that hard even DAoC had this and it is a pretty old "Clone" MMO.

It's the lagging guy that's usually the one that's a problem for everyone else. Skips and jumps around, good luck hitting that shit.

Hopefully, they are able to actually pull this off, and I hope that there are multiple people who have the ability to tweak their internet latency on the fly. That's where the true test occurs. Problem with a server assuming you'll keep going straight is at some point, you turn, it didn't 'predict' that and now you are out of sync locally on your client vs. the server. Prediction will only work so well, then you lose it and either you have to correct the position of the person lagging, by either making them move suddenly to the correct position either on everyone elses client, or on the lagging persons client. I guarantee both of those will suck hard, more so the second option.
I am hoping they can pull it off, but until we see it in action, we won't know. (200 real people in a battle, not simulated with AI which are all run on one machine or cluster of machines and don't have internet latency issues)

Is that what he thought I meant? I was referring to multiple methods of attack and how the player can choose which form to use. Back when I still played S2 there was basically one form of attack that played through animations and an interrupt function. The only way to hit multiple targets was by the Lego's whirlwind special and you'd never worry about hitting your own teammates.
I'm not saying it's a worse game, but that its combat's focus is very different from Darkfall's.
