I was told by a not so reliable source (some random guy in AoC that I was chatting with) that the screenshots posted for Darkfall are not done with the best settings that the game can support. Now I know its still being developed and that some improvement in graphics is to be expected. Right now things look great short of the armor and weapons looking a little roughed up and blocky...but is this true? Are we not seeing the best of the best that the game can offer at this point?

Again...things look good graphically at this point. Not the best I have seen but definately on par with the scale of this game and it's progress so far.

As you said, the graphics already look good. Who cares anyway? Don't trust what some random dude from AoC says.

Well...I care...lol. If what he says is true then its a good thing I think. Graphics don't make the game...I mean hell I still play AC sometimes as well as Shadowbane...but I am a graphics whore. I've got a high end machine and I love to utilize it to it's fullest. I am just curious if we can expect more or not.

the graphics we see are taken from an average computer they said.

Correct.

So taken from an average computer. I can see that that statement could be mistaken in a way. Does that mean that the average computer can handle the maximum that DF offers? Or does that mean its an average computer running the game as well as it can but not at the maximum? Either way...it's a good idea. If the game looks this good on the "average" computer then that means its just that much more playable for the average gamer.

the graphics will scale up depending on what kind of computer you have. If yours can support really good graphics it will look better. The graphics in the screen shots are as good as it can look for a medium computer. Graphics dont make the game dude dont worry about it looks pretty good to me. improvement on what i currently play anyway. What im most concerned about is the dark black line that seems to surround alot of objects.

Hmmm, I don't remember if you can have better graphics with a high end pc. But you can expect to see these kind of graphics in a fight with two hundreds characters without lowering your graphics settings with an average computer as far as I know.

gameplay > graphics

a well designed, realistic world appearance does not need a system hog of an engine like A*C've had.

Imo morrowind is a pretty good example of a living breathing world without being to heavy on the hardware side.

Again...I don't know how many times I have to repeat this...

Graphics don't make the game...but it's not like they don't matter either. I like good graphics...I like having the best visuals...but it doesn't mean I won't play the game. I guess I can't make a post on this subject without having a bunch of people repeat the same line over and over though can I?

yeah they seem to be a little stubborn?

i know what you mean and i agree
if a game has bad graphics it can take away from the fun of the game in a huge way....our eyes need something to feed on while we play or it gets old quick

however from what ive seen in the latest shots the game looks really good and the only problem i really see is a few ugly textures and lack of antialiasing

otherwise it looks good and i dont think thats gunna ruin it for me

I agree with everything you have said. I don't think I will have a problem with DF either way. It looks good enough to make me happy already. I can usually play AC or SB for about a couple of weeks before the lack of graphics quality gets to me and I want something that has more eye candy.

And no Bimbaa his comment does not fail.

Lulz, url or it didn't happen ;) Well I guess you're right, our eyes need something to feed on. For me, it's enough if I have some random white dots on a screen. Playing without seeing anything could be kinda hard.

not exactly what i said but it is a study closely related to the study proving that eyes need stimulation while playing games and this can keep the brain craving the visual interaction

i swear i read it somewhere before

If you ask me it is just common sense. The nicer it is visually the more entertained and drawn in you will get. I mean if you had two games...IDENTICAL in gameplay but one is graphically better...which would you choose?

EDIT: I better clarify this before people freak...

Visuals are not the ONLY thing that entertain or draw people in. Gameplay and community are also factors as well as other things. But you can't say graphics don't matter. They may not be the most important aspect of a game but they do matter.

The thing is, even if graphics are nice, they get old REALLY fast. Atleast for me. I might think "wow this looks good" for a few hours but then I get used to it and it doesn't matter anymore at all. This makes über graphics pretty much useless to me as I just don't care. Gameplay is what keeps people playing, not the graphics.

thats really true but subconsiously it can work the same too
some more than others need there brain to be stimulated by the graphics of a game....you dont know it but when you look at something your brain notices every detail and less details means your brain remembers details after a very short amount of time and in the same way songs get old after awhile your brain memorizes the notes and words and eventually you know them too well and your brain has nothing to process when listening and in some cases you will forget your listening to it

graphics are way < game play

Id play DFO with EQ1 beta graphics if the devs delivered on all there other promises.

graphic do matter somewhat what if a game had no graphics and you just type in

vast fireball

then 10 seconds later it says fireball did 10 dmg

took 8 dmg from sword

that would be boring thats y graphics matter

Never heard of MUDs eh? :)

Never heard of MUDs eh? :)

Yeah I played MUDs that were more fun than effing WoW.

Anyway, quote from dev:

The typical reaction to the screenshots has been for people to wonder what kind of beast they're going to need to play the game. It's not like that at all. Everything in Darkfall has been optimized for speed since it has been made for massive warfare. To give you an idea, you could get good gameplay displaying graphics like our latest screenshots using an average - above average system and a Geforce 6600 graphics card. The graphics are very scalable, with the difference that you won't look at the screenshot graphics, and your own scaled-down graphics will look like crap in comparison. I see official screenshots from other games that look amazing, then I see some in-game screens and they're an insult. We don't have a 'screenshot setting only' to sell you the game - all of Darkfall's graphics settings are fully useable. Furthermore, the Darkfall engine can be set to auto-scale real-time to maintain your desired framerate. Our number one priority is gameplay, and this is why the graphics have just recently started coming along in a big way. Having said that, the screenshots and videos still do not do the live game justice...your game screen will look far better than anything we've shown you so far.

There's also a reference somewhere to other games having screenshot teams "bigger than aventurine's entire art/graphics department" (that's a paraphrase in quotes, I should be shot, but whatever).

lol your trusting what a random AoC fanboi is saying about Darkfall? LOL :p

Actually they had stated that the settings weren't at the highest for the screenshots that have been taken, as a 3D Artist though I can tell you that the modelling they do have there looks pretty damn good, I'm impressed with how clean they've kept everything, not necessarily detailed, but clean, I'm sick of MMORPGs that do all these really pretty models and cover it up with shiny particle effects or bloom.

Thank you! That is exactly what I needed! And no Lethn I am NOT trusting what some random fanboy said in AoC...thats why I am asking in this forum.
