I am slightly confused on how houses, buildings, city walls, ect. will be built. Do you hire people to come and build it for you, or is it similar to "Age of Mythology" were you pick what building you want and just click were you want it built.
Also how long does it take to construct buildings, does it depend on how large the structure is.
Please fill me in:)

I think it will be like this.
1. you own a clan city
2. you pick what kind of building you want to build
3. the game picks where the building will go (I think all cities are predesignated by GMS)
4.you then start working on the building.
5. once you have used enough resources and time/skill the building will be finished.
6. some buildings have a limmited number of them you can have in a city (such as a guild hall) and once you have built that building you can not build another.
I doubt you can manually place buildings.

Oh god no, I sure as hell hope they dont have predetermined houses, then what would be the point of the freedom aspect? I no there will be certain areas but at least give us the freedom to put the castle where we want it in that area, if not then we could lose a great strategic bonus as well.
I'm almost 100% certain that you DO get to choose where structures are placed. It's a big part of the strategy being able to choose where to place walls/archer towers/etc.

I thought there would be a certain number of building sites, but you could pick which one any particular building went on. It's all our speculation of course, this is one of those really fundamental things that they haven't told us.

What would be awesome is if you could "draw" blueprints for your building and then place it (and then build up the fortress brick by brick ;))
But getting back to the question, no. I doubt they will do it like AoM. I believe at one point, Tasos said the building system would be like building with Legos: one brick at a time :P

it would be cool if they did like in Shadowbane...
i've been playing this, and the idea is pretty cool ;)
you can build anywhere except in the "noob island" (I know that in DF we can't build anywhere...) or in territory of another guild city
you must have a guild, then buy a special Seed
go to the place you want to start your city, plant the seed and a Tree of Life will emerge, then you'll buy certain Charts to build your city from the ground, with inns, barracks to have guards, walls, etc etc in your territory (you get to choose exactly where you want your buildings, but buildings near the Tree get invulnerable, except in sieges of course...)
the tree also acts as a spawn point for your members
then you have a maintenance cost, and you need certain materials to build things (so it is a smart idea to start a city near a mine)
until one day some guild declares war on you, and there's a date for beginning siege, much like in DF, and you can lose everything =)
i hope they release that video soon..

From what I read the system for city building sounded very much like shadowbane

I get the impression that we wont really be able to place any thing but that the city plan is all ready designed by the devs.

To me it does sound like SB, minus being able to choose where your city actually goes. I've heard static city locations mentioned several times (with numbers between 40-100 city sites... I'm too lazy to look up the exact number :P).
I honestly hope the cities aren't pre-designed for strategic reasons, but it's not a huge deal to me if they are. If nothing else it would keep people from doing silly things like blocking their gates with houses etc.
The technology allows for random building. We've chosen not to allow it based on carefully weighing the pros and the cons. Of course, just like with anything else, this decision will be evaluated through testing and feedback by the players.

Given the level of design they have mentioned for clan cities being built into caverns, hidden behind waterfalls, having hidden entrances etc I imagine it is important to limit the amount of freedom you have in building. I can't see them hand crafting an entire world only to let some douche bag clan architect ruin the look and feel with stupid building placements. But I guess it really comes down to what's practical in terms of UI and functionality.

certain areas cannot be built on.
others have spots that are buildable
its not just slap a house down where ever the hell you want.

As I understand it, there will be some larger cities thats been prebuild, there vill be villages thats been prebuild and can be expanded by a guild and there will be spots where You can start creating a city from scratch.
I guess the number of premade cities in different sizes etc..40-50 ?, and alot more hotspots for city building.
also you can place houses on the clans teritory, which means the outskirts of the town or in the wilderness.

The city that rae prebuild... couldn't they theorethicly be destroyed and then re-build? Maybe a guild wants to change something then it just destroys most of the city's buildings and changes the style?
I just hope it's not limited to "Build Tavern" and then the Tavern is build on a pre-defined spot. If that's the case, they could also just take the building-system out and let us take over pre-built cities.

I think you'll be able to manually place the buildings. They've said that you won't be able to build anywhere though, only on predetermined spots chosen by the devs. Disappointing? Yes. We'll see how it works out....
Darkfall - Not as much freedom as in Shadowbane!

I think it's more like: The structure of the city (Walls, roads and so on) is predesigned but you can choose which buildings you create and where, aslong as it fits.

what exactly do they mean by random building? Can anyone explain? Random city building whereever you want or choosing the structure-location or what?

I thought I read something about this earilyer. Ill see if I can find it. I thought it said there will be freedom to where you place your houses, citys whatever but there are limits, I'll try and find it.

To me it seems that you would buy the blue prints of the building you want, then choose the are you want for that particular building (a flat area with no trees in the way), then when you collect enough resources for that building it is built
