View Full Version : Question: Combat in DFO

I am wondering how combat will be like in DFO.
Yes I saw the gameplay vid a year ago. But as far as I could tell there was, for example, no delay in swinging your sword, or casting a spell (with a wand). I guess, if you want to make it more balanced, adding some kind of delay or some time to charge for a swing will take care of it.
I know the video is from a year ago, but then again, I haven't seen any other gameplay movie, so I'm basing this thread on what I know. (I guess we will get to see more in the upcoming vid)
Won't fights be looking like a knife fight as you see in Counter-Strike (the famous knife round) ? Assuming only melee weapons are used ofcourse.
And what about bringing down a hard boss with some people ? How will the NPC act ? can't you just run around the NPC and fool it that way ?
I'm really curious about all this. I guess we will have to see in the upcoming gameplay vid. Or maybe you guys know more about this already.

Alot of unanswered questions will be answered at that moment... most combat features are already explained in details in the Q&A Section and in the journals...
Everyone is waiting for that video, and should be coming up by the end of the month.. so patience

They might have already added timers etc.

The fights will be in tight 3rd person.
And there will be special attacks etc.
And what about bringing down a hard boss with some people ? How will the NPC act ? can't you just run around the NPC and fool it that way ?
NPCs are supposed to be quite intelligent and kinda like 'quake bots' or something.. Dragons will fly and attack healers etc, instead of running after one melee person.

I think the swinging your sword and casting a spell delay will be based on mana and stamina loss after swinging the sword and casting the spells.
If I remember correct spellcasting will be first person and swinging sword will be third person.

Weapons will nauturally have an attack speed, I dont care how good or trained you are, your never going to swing a 2 handed sword as fast as someone swinging a dagger.
melee combat will be in a tight 3rd person view, not first person. so imagine socom or gears of war except with melee weapons. all ranged attacks will be in first person view like CS.
the AI on mobs is like that of a quake bot, they adapt quickly and act as much like a real person as possible.

Yeah it will be in 3rd person, I know, but in that movie, I saw the characters instantly swinging their swords without having to charge for a more powerful hit; but perhaps that's implemented already (holding your mouse to charge up for example).
Let's hope the NPC's are smart. I'm more of a PvPer, but fighting hard to kill NPC's can be satisfying (spelling?).

The combat is unlikely any MMO to date. EVERYTHING is aimed there is no auto-aim. You can block, use terrain, etc.

This is by far the best FAQ about combat in DF.

If you want some info on the AI read these

And
Someone asked for a description of a typical PvP and a PvE encounter: To this I'll answer that there is no typical encounter in Darkfall. There are too many variables and you never know what you're getting into. Here's a quick PvE encounter for you nevertheless:
You ride up to a seemingly abandoned village and you get off your mount to explore it. As you enter through a gate, you hear a sound just as a mob jumps on you from above and connects with its weapon. You back up trying to mess up its range while you pull out your battleaxe. You rush the mob which circle-strafes you and you miss in your initial attacks. You manage to trade a couple of blows with it and it turns and runs. You pull out your bow and you notice it's doing the same as it's running off. You aim for its back and right as you release, your aim is thrown off by the explosion of a fireball which knocks you back and you miss. By the time you recover, the initial mob starts landing arrows on you and its friends are shooting spells while a couple are closing in to engage you with melee weapons. You run to your mount under fire and you try to get away but it gets killed from under you and you have to run away zigzagging because your character is in bad shape. Just as you think you're safe, an arrow, fired by another player you haven't seen in all the commotion, finishes you off and you're summarily stripped of your belongings. The End.

you mean like in oblivion where you can hold and charge your attacks? thats alittle unrealistic if you ask me, granted this is obviously a fantasy setting with magic and all that.... it still doesnt seem right. Im not actually sure if its been covered or not if that was possible.
If you want to get an idea of what the most basic combat in DF will be like try out a game called mount and blade.

Guys, you are getting me all wrong, I know alot about the game already, been following it for a few years, I was just spewing out my concerns about the combat system.
And no, I didn't mean charging as in charging your bow to shoot an arrow. But in real life it's very hard to swing a (two handed) sword while walking around (or backwards for that matter). Well, you can swing it, but it won't be much of an impact, unless you are trying to thrust the sword.

That was one thing I thought was missing from Yellowbeards write up. Exactly how does the combat work. Mouse direction determines attack angle or what?

if I move while swinging a sword i actually apply much more force in my swing....

Actually, the combat sounds very similar to Roma Victor. Too bad the RV engine is so poor, it really cant support combat with more than a handful of players. But it works well enough as "proof of concept". This style is great fun. Lets hope Aventurine has the skills to make this work under all conditions...those 200+ player battles have me concerned.
FWIW: RV has a one second minimum cool-down between attacks. You can attack quickly, but not relentlessly spam. And if you run out of vigour/stamina because you are flailing away, you are dead meat. I expect something similar with DFO.

id expect cooldown betwen attacks will depend on the weapon. you cant swing a 2 handed axe every second. im also expecting the same stamina/vigour type system, if youve played shadowbane you could also compare that.
