View Full Version : A great possibility

I am wondering if anyone thinks it possible, because I have seen many people on these forums voicing this opinion, (which I did not consider because it did not appeal to me personally as a player) that many people will become strict crafters.
If the game provides enough depth for farmers\crafters\carpenters\what have you that people wish to play it as a "crafting\resource management\market sim" game, then perhaps specialization of player types could create a possible codependency between those wanting to player fighters (like myself) and crafters, ie crafters will need to hire fighters to collect some things for them, transport them to difficult areas, guard them from attack. While the fighters will need crafters to buy items from\buy houes\food etc.
I understand it will probably, hopefully, be more of a scaling type thing, some players leaning toward crafting, some towards fighting, some in the middle...but I would love to see all the complimenting character configurations in action in the world.

i've heard a couple people that have said they ONLY want to craft. i'll never understand it myself, but they're all either old or they're girls.

It's definetly going to happen and viable. There's one in my clan atleast.

Well I think thats the idea, yeah. I deffinately plan to spend most of my time crafting, but if the system is shit or I just don't find it fun, then I won't hesitate to drop all those crafting skills.

I think most players would rather excell at one area rather than be OK at either crafting and combat.

I will not be a strict crafter. My char will prolly be a human knight or something like this so i will probably just pick up basic crafting skills to repair my armor/craft some equipment(for me). I dont know if i will bother getting deep into crafting/trading as i prefer pvping and will most likey make money from warfare.

Maybe they are just dedicated to helping their clan as much as they can? I know I can find a game's economy just as fun as its battles (especially if the combat is v. repetitive).

Seems very possible. Darkfall will provide. And I've seen many people who are very into the crafting aspect.

I doubt someone will go pure crafting, maybe they will specialize in it, but combat isn't non-existant to them. If I were to craft primarily I would also pick up some support skills/spells or become a ranger.
Not doing any crafting has the advantage of giving you a bit of a boost in combat.

I might do that at some point, because I love to support people and make usefull things for them. But I will obviously start as a fucking fighter, because with a fighting system like that, you just CANNOT not try it. (fuck yes double negation)

I just hope (for those people) that crafting isn't a grind fest. Sure the npcs will help do the gathering, but if every day all you do is wake up and right-click smelt for 30 minutes I'd be pissed.

Back in UO there were people like that. Granted UO had multiple characters. What happened is there was one major guild that all of the crafters were apart of. Piss off one of those guild members, and you'd be hard pressed to find any decent armor or weapons. People we're always doing favors for them because they wanted to stay on the guilds good side.
Even when a game isn't totally item dependent, a good guild of crafters can be a powerful force.

Yes. I hope there are. And if there are, I also hope that many of them will work for me.

It is something that will definitley happen if equipment makes a difference(many say it won't , I think it will). It is surprising, if that side of the game offers some form of challenge how easy it is to become addicted to crafting. And it is more of a community role that a lot of people like to play.
As far a rare component i'd guess it will be components for gear, or a guild suipplying the crafter to his/.her hearts content as long as they churn out the goods.
So many possibilities, now someone release this damn GAME NOW !!!
it is also said that some skills contribute less to the soft skill cap so it may be the case that in non combat areas a lot of peeps can learn the craft skills as a side line. When they want a break from combat.

"Amateurs discuss tactics, savantes discuss strategies, professionals discuss logistics."
In most games, even though I've done nothing but pvp for about the last 6 years, in most games, the crafters and builders and feeders and growers are THE LIFEBLOOD of every large organization. You will get exactly nowhere in EVE without people absolutely dedicated to this kind of play style. It will be even more telling in DFO with full loot and item decay. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to disparage these people; they are playing the same game as you with the same risks, they merely choose to create rather than destroy, at least some of the time.
So here's to you, Mr. Full-Set-Of-Small-Platemail-Builder. Without you, we'd have a lot of naked dwarves. And nobody wants that.

Actually, they have been leaning away from the NPC model for quite some time now. Which is an extremely bad thing. I was really, REALLY looking forward to having a little peasant girl working on my farm. Or the village idiot fishing for me all day for nothing more than a pat on the head and a little peanut butter.
NPC AI was one of the best things I was waiting for in Darkfall, and if they sacrifice that on the altar of these whining FPS shitfucks, I'm just not playing. And neither will a lot of people, because we're not waiting for fucking CS with swords.

NPC's (In the terms of monsters) and NPC AI is still in :P
Seriously, don't forget there are plenty of mercenary clans.

If anyone can simply learn to craft the best items when they aren't busy PKing then crafters have no real role. For crafting to truly shine it needs some skill benefits that only specialists with the synergy of multiple GM crafting skills can obtain.
I would hope that a crafter can have many interrelated skills like metallurgy, blacksmithing, weapon smithing, artistry, etc. that in combination allow the highest quality items to be made. As most players will likely be unable to maintain a full set of complimentary crafting skills due to the demands of their role as fighters, dedicated crafters would then be highly sought after.
It may happen, it may not....lack of info on crafting from devs is worrying but I just hope it's to protect ingenuity rather than to cover up mediocrity.

How does having to gather your own shit equate to CS with swords?

I'm sorry but this is a stupid question IMO. There's something wrong with you if don't KNOW that there will absolutely be dedicated crafters. There will be A LOT of them. Their value to the clan will be enormous. Not only will they make the supplies for sieging, they will also make profits that the clan can tax.
