Now I do understand that being AFK doesn’t necessarily mean you are completely out of the game; you may be chatting with guildies, doing other things. However, not one of these people had moved their spots at all. So for 5 hours, as far as I could tell, those people were just sitting in there, staying logged online for no real reason other than they were too lazy to turn their game off. I then started to wonder, just how much energy was that using?

The energy use depends on how powerful the computer is, how much stuff is plugged into it, and how intensive of load the game puts on the computer. Also, computers dissipate heat into their environment, so it'll add a greater load on the building's AC unit (using more energy) if it's hotter outside, or it'll lessen the load (using less energy) if it's colder outside.
