the Quote is here:
Yeah, we all know how truly amazing Crytek's engine is and how tormenting it becomes even for Quad Cores and 8800 Ultras, but just wait till you see what huge maps this baby can render!
When Crytek said that Crysis is "future proof" they really meant what they said... And if you ever wondered why your insanely high-end computer kneels and bows before the 1+ million lines of code, 1GB of textures and 85,000 shaders that the game currently packs, well just read this: the absolute maximum size of a map in Crysis can reach the mind-boggling value of 68,719,476,736 square kilometers!!!!! Yeah, that's more than 68.7 billion... And you know what? Earth's entire surface "barely" reaches 150,000,000 square kilometers, so with Crytek's SandBox editor one can theoretically create a map approximately 458 times bigger than the area of Earth...
That means that if you want to have like... our planet's entire population playing Crysis simultaneously on multiplayer, a single player would have to walk around 10 square kilometers to meet its next opponent on that huge map...
Now THAT is what I call future proof... But I just wonder, what kind of super-computer, super-server-cluster monstrosity would render even half of that huge map?...

You all realize that if such a huge map were created, you would never see another living soul unless you started in the same location.
At some point, maps get too big. Do you want to play an MMO to go off on your own adventure and never see anyone else? Why not just play a singleplayer game then?
Like they said, if the whole population of the earth was playing it, you'd have to walk 10km to see someone. I'm pretty sure not even 1% of the worlds population would be playing it.
As for me, a small map with alot of people around is better. That way I don't have to walk very far before finding someone to kill.

You dear sir are forgetting a crucial fact: By the time a PC powerful enough to run the example world exists, there would be a massive increase in the human population. Also, advanced artificial intelligence could populate the holes, or the MMO concept may even evolve into a bizarre simulation where humans can live out their "What if?" desires by casting themselves into an artificial recreation of a certain time/story/concept, populated by virtual actors who thought and behaved according to their environment.
Indeed, what would have happened if Caesar were not murdered by conspirators, but by a group of madmen bent on retrieving his phat loots? What kind of society would arise if we, the human species, existed alongside dinosaurs; what level of fear can the words "all kill" inspire in our digital people? These are among but a few questions that anthropologists and historians will want answered, and finally computers will bring them the truth!

Well...
Do you seriously think that will happen in the next 5 years... 10 years... 20? What do they need a world so huge for if they are recreating the earth?
I still don't see it's use, unless it's used for some space game that allows you to have multiple full sized planets.
That gets back to the point of who would you find? AI is not yet at the point where it's strong enough to play itself, not on that scale at least. The super computers in the world may be able to populate a planet with all the AI agents, but who would want to use all the computing power in the world just for that?
We will need several advances in computing power, bandwidth, AI tech, and server tech before we see something like that.
Which brings me back to why? All of those things you mentioned can be done with smaller maps. There is no need for such a ginormous world.

Your problem is that you cannot grasp the importance of scale. Yes, SCALE! Tell me, would the Eiffel tower be remembered if it were the size of a common household paperweight? Obviously not. If the great projects of the future are to be remembered, they must be equally enormous in their ambition! Why settle for the Earth when entire galaxies can be mapped out, all in the interest of furthering our knowledge about what exactly would happen if we were to change history.
So I hope you see why we need to make worlds as large as 400 times the Earth's surface area. It's because we CAN, and if it's to be done, it's better to do it before some other guy does.

Entropia.. I've never heard of it before. It truly seems fucking incredible.
Anyone here play it? Can you really break a profit by playing well?
Oh wait... wikipedia ftw!
On 10 October (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/October_10) 2006 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006), it was reported that Mike Everest, a home-schooled high school senior from Durango, Colorado had paid for his siblings' college fees by trading virtual goods within Entropia Universe, and withdrawing his profits as real US dollars. Everest, better-known as "Ogulak Da Basher" on the planet Calypso, claims to have made over US$35,000. Of that profit, $12,000 was used to help his two siblings attend college. When asked if he suggested this to other high schoolers looking to make money, he said, "Not really, unless they can be devoted to it.
It's really hard in the beginning to play the game." Everest spends an average of three hours a day on Entropia. "Some days I don't get on at all. But other days I can spend half of the day playing in Entropia." Since he is home schooled, he is allowed this freedom. Moreover, it can be argued that he learns life lessons from within the universe. Within Entropia, Everest is a captain in the Entropian hunting society, "ck Coat Killers." There, he is a hunter/miner who constructs weapons and sells them to make a profit. Though this is not your traditional business model, it teaches a real lesson about costs and demands. Now that the two older Everest children are set up in college, Mike says he plans to save for his own college education--"and maybe a car". When asked if he will remain active in online worlds in the coming 10 years, Everest says he is not going anywhere, but also knows what a commitment virtual worlds can be. "It depends on how busy I am. But I think I will, because I've made friends all over the world. I couldn't see myself ever leaving it."
I'm speechless...

Well from Wiki, the highest single thing sold was about 100k worth, not 400k. So I doubt it actually happened.
I know there's one guy who owns a virtual night club on an asteroid, he makes over 100k from it annually.
