LOS ANGELES (AP) — City officials are putting South Los Angeles on a diet.

The City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to place a moratorium on new fast food restaurants in an impoverished swath of the city with a proliferation of such eateries and above average rates of obesity.

The yearlong moratorium is intended to give the city time to attract restaurants that serve healthier food. The action, which the mayor must still sign into law, is believed to be the first of its kind by a major city to protect public health.

"Our communities have an extreme shortage of quality foods," City Councilman Bernard Parks said.

Interesting to say the least.

Why don't they just pass a law against obesity and if you are in violation of that law you get 90 days to show improvement and if you get cited a second time you get sent to a labor camp.

WoW would lose more than half its player base and DFO would not even have a chance.

Bah.

Next they'll be saying obesity is a disease and then psychiatrists and pharmaceutical companies will have another cash cow since ADD and bi-polar drug sales and therapies are dwindling.

When is someone just going to finally call bullshit?

because in the United States, you have the freedom to be a fat, slovenly piece of shit that never gets to have sex.

its not like the people in those neighborhoods cant walk to where there IS fastfood.

Yeah, like people should be asked how to treat their body.
If you're fat it's your problem, not your neighbour's and even the state one.
If you smoke, it's your problem not your state.
If you drink alcohol, it's your problem.
If you do drugs, it's your problem.

If this kind of thing is what you like, what about : only dietetic meals made exactly for you are authorized, you must go to some gym every day for x hours of personnal training. Want to be a robot ? Be my guest. But don't force your views on others. And don't whine when you die at 120 after a perfect robot life while people like me enjoy shorter but more enjoyable life and die at 50.

It is a problem because fat people costs millions of dollars in medical expenses and that isn't good when you have universal health-care like in Canada. In fact, They should ban smoking and being fat in Canada. Save us some money.

You think its a step in the right direction that the government step in and tell people what they can and cant eat and restrict their access to the only kind of food they might be able to afford???

In any case its none of the governments fuckng business what you eat and dont eat.. the market should decide that. If these people were that concerned they wouldnt shop there. If they wanted high quality food, "healthy" and could afford it.. the demand would create supply.. no need for artifical manipulation.

Exactly why many of us in the US think Universal Healthcare is bullshit.. because we have people like you trying to dictate how other people live their lives..

You canadians give us endless shit for our healthcare but you bitch about the fat smokers in your country and how much they cost you LOL

The GOVERNMENT has no right to dictate what someone can or cannot eat.

This is SO ridiculously invasive of the government, they have no business here... it's fucking sick to me that people will just nod along and accept it.

I guess people just like having parents even as adults.

Bingo.

Public health care gives the government all the leverage it needs to control the people, because they are the ones spending the money (even though it's morally our money).

If they try to pass a law that will decrease the cost of their scheme, in the publics view and in the governments view, it's a step in the right direction.

If you live in a free society, there is such a thing as a market.

Here is how it works. People open a business and offer a service, a risk, for the chance at a far larger reward in the long run. Now they offer prices based on their budget, desiring to clear a profit overall while still offering the best deal.

But then, if the customers are not happy, they lose business. That's how our society works. If you do not like one business, go to a different one. Corporations do not own us, if you want to eat somewhere, go eat there, if not, move on to the next restaurant. It's that simple.

I actually don't have much against making laws to get people to be healthier personally, smoking for one thing causes other people to get cancer because of second hand smoke and generally I don't want that shit blown in my face when I walk along a street thanks, if you want to do what you want then do it in the privacy of your own bloody home and not where other people would rather not be exposed to such a thing.

The government bloody amaze me though, it's as if they're going out of their way to piss everyone off as much as possible instead of trying to solve genuine issues as I don't think almost every person in these countries is going to be affected by these idiotic laws that they pass, hell all this games bullshit has been driving me up the wall as it is.

Ya until the massive corporations buy out said restaurant or the other restaurants have to jack up their prices so high that you can't eat there because you can't afford it. Your illusion of freedom is quite amusing.

If they cause a problem because of universal healthcare, just stop these bullshit socialistic thing. I'm sure lot of companies will specialize in fat people health insurance and be very profitable.
Because fat people are healthy a good part of their life, then die quickly instead of slowly dieing during 10 or 20 years.

Just live outside of town and hunt your own perfectly healthy food. Or go in another country where quality food is cheaper. Or better : create your own food corporation.

Breathing in second hand smoke once or twice will do little to no harm whatsoever... though it certainly is vile, it's no cause to ban it.

LOL the more I come to forumfall the more conservative I become. I think that law that protect people from them selves are dumb such as the OP and the seat belt laws.

I can understand some of the smoking laws such, as smoking in public because that directly effects other people.

I think people have the right to eat any thing they can want, but they have to deal with the consequences.

Ya but if you let the market do its thing then eventually we will only have a couple Super-corporations that will have so much power that the Government we know will only be an illusion. We will never have a stable society, it will always be, The goverment or corporations or even a religion will gain way to much power. They will either:

A. Have ultimate power and the world ends up like 1984
B. Be overthrown and the cycle starts again
C. Aliens try to invade us and the world unites and struggles against the other worldly menace. Then everyone focuses on space and we end up with something like star trek.

Personally, I like the third option

Well, when you subsidize public healthcare (or socialize it) then the taxpayers have a vested interest in keeping people healthy and keeping health costs down.

On the other hand, I advocate not paying people's medical bills, letting them fuck themselves up however much they damned well please, and letting them sleep in the beds they make for themselves. It apparently makes me a selfish, money-grubbing, racist.

Nonetheless, if you agree with public healthcare you kind of have to agree with public health regulation and preventative social controls. It just makes sense.
