Unless you want him beat up daily you'll drop your entire list.

Go with something normal for Christ sake... The weirder the name, the more likely the personality will be weird as well. This is proven time, and time again.

Half your names were female for crying out loud.

Brannoc?

So far, I like the name Alessia, it fits both a male and a female, mostly female.. But the kid is going to get his fucking ass kicked with a name like that, and I view this as a good thing..

As his father, you'll likely reap the benefits of his rise to power. Are you going to throw that away for a pussy name?

Well I don't know much about scandenavia, but I'd drop these for sure, as they are fully female.

Akira
Valentine
Andrea
Sascha

The others I dunno about, they are still weird. Unless you live in that part of the world those names WILL get your son's ass kicked at least once a week from age 8 - 16. Or if he is very lucky it'll merely be continuous, and sustained emotional torture through high school. YAY! :D

lol akira is a badass, but the name is crappy for an american (unless your son is asian looking) imo.

Andre and Sascha are alrite, maybe valentine could be a good middle name (if you believe in that).

Then why the fuck do you want to give your kid a scandinavian name?

Why not just call him Ivon and let him know early on hes going to get his ass kicked. Ill look out for the school masacre in 14 years time when Ivan goes to school and kills 15 people.

Of that list, only Marcus seems like even a remotely decent idea. Neither Cedric nor Oliver would be absolutely awful, though.

Also, if you sully Octavian's name by giving it to your son (or whomever you are referring to), I will take it upon myself to kill your son and possibly you as well. I am dead fucking serious. The man was quite possibly the greatest man who ever lived, and you think your son will be able to compare with him. There is a reason no one has that name anymore.

To be clear (to avoid a "lol? you're not talking about this idiot are you?" argument) I am referring to Gaius Iulius Caesar Octavianus.

Heh, Ivon would be better then every last name on that list in that regard...

Tell me a kid named Gorlan, or Elyghen isn't gonna hate life. If he lives in pheonix and seriously names his kid one of these names, or any other similarly weird name the kid is gonna hate life, and when he finds out the driving force behind his name he'll hate his father.

If you insist on a weird name though, I'd go with Fro. (Our resident Fro will love you for it.)

Alexander was around earlier (and so has faded more, so to speak), was less successful, and is (perhaps most importantly) a common name in Russia (where, culturally speaking, Alexander is and always was irrelevant.)

But yes, yes I do. If Octavian/Augustus were around today I would gladly find a way to have his babies. Similarly, if I could, I'd go back in time and get Tiberius Gracchus to not make his fatal mistake. Had he not, there might be a Roman Republic to this day.

Its hard to nail it down to one name without the last name, which I presume you don't want to post here.

I'd keep Gareth as a middle name, as its cool, but still a little odd.

James Michael Gareth Lastname.

At this point I'd focus on which names go together well w/ your last name.

Nothing worse then mismatched names that just don't go well together.

Sorry! I just had to do it! It is kind of weird that you would have a crush on them. But, I have no problem with you admiring them for their military genius. Hannibal is the most awesome military leader of that era though. Going against the might of Rome and succeeding for a while. That is true manliness and brains.

Well I don't want to get a history debate going here, but I don't feel it's fair to say that Alexander was "less successful". I realize you're man crush may be giving you a slightly biased view of the comparison, but let's give Alexander the respect he deserves.

I personally feel you shouldn't try to declare who was "more successful", as they both succeeded in their goals.

Besides, Alexander, with what resources he had, probably accomplished more than almost any other military mind could have, spare perhaps the aforementioned Hannibal. The man was not only a military genius, but also proved to be rather effective at governing, recognizing that he must respect and assimilate the culture the cultures that he conquered, a tactic that the Romans would later use. Had he not died so young he probably would have solidified his empire throughout the course of his life.

Essentially, I believe we shouldn't be trying to declare who is "better". :p

Please dont do the same with your son. choose a normal name, maybe somthing unusual but not completely moronic or of cultures that dont match his own.
It will be problematic for him, its a goddam son not a dog!
So if you are like a japanese man name him akira, if you REALLY want to, but otherwise its senseless. I dont understand why you have to use all those names like choosing a turd in a public latrine.

Four syllable names are rare, and even rarer to be spoken in full.

Octavius for short..

Octavian was a sickly little weakling. Julius Caesar was ten times more badass then Octavian could ever be.
Physically, yes. So what? When you have people who can do your bidding, who needs physical strength?

Plus Iulius (I refuse to use the J) Caesar's ego was too big for his own good, which is saying something considering all that he accomplished. Read the De Bello Gallico, preferably the original if you can, and you'll see what I mean.

And BladeSLicer, two things:
1. I think you would agree that, square mile for square mile, the Roman Empire during the age of Augustus was larger than Alexander's empire.
2. I said "quite possibly" the greatest man there ever was. I didn't say I actually think he was, because I would never actually declare that any one man was the greatest that ever was. I would, however, say that he is one of a handful that is worthy of being considered for the title. I'd say Alexander is too.

Unless you want him beat up daily you'll drop your entire list.

Go with something normal for Christ sake... The weirder the name, the more likely the personality will be weird as well. This is proven time, and time again.

Half your names were female for crying out loud.

Ya, it's sad to say but true. When choosing a name, try to actually not be original. It's one area where kids love to torture other kids. Strange, but whatever. It's how it seems to work.

A good strong name, like John, or James... they both are great, classical, but common, names. Your kid will not be abused via his name. ;)

Besides, if your kid does not like the name, when he grows up, he can legally change it, so ya... just go for safety rather than risky in this case.

Having a unusual name isn't all bad. Chicks dig it.
Mine is Ezekiel, but people are too lazy so they call me Zeke.

Yes, the Roman Empire was obviously larger than that of the Macedonians, but I don't believe that should determine who was "better".

Firstly, by the time Augustus took control, the Roman Empire was of a decent size already. That, and they had a huge pool of resources to draw from, in the form of both money and manpower.

Alexander the Great, in a mere 8 years, conquered more land than most would deem possible. With only 50,000ish men he marched into Persia (The strongest nation in the world at the time), completely destroyed them, and his empire ended up stretching from Macedonia and Greece in the Northwest, all the way through turkey and into Scythia in the north east corner, down into India itself in the southeast corner, and all the way back to Egypt itself. He did this with, for the most part, the very men he set out with, and was outnumbered in virtually every major battle along the road. He even overcame the elephants of India, being quite possibly the first european force to ever face them.

Anyway, he did this in a mere 8 years, and at the age of 33 he planned to expand not only into the Arabian Peninsula, but into Italy as well. Who knows what he could have accomplished if he had lived as long as Augustus did.

But yes, this is how I see it.

Alexander: Master Military Tactician
Augustus: Master Politician/Governor

I don't really think we should be trying to determine who is "better", as both were incredible in their own right. :D

Well there ya go, you have made the connection. Different names have different cultural significance.

Thing is; they also have different cultural significance in different cultures. How you got "black" from Monique is strange to me, and I don't think that any European would have that association.
Also, I hope you noted the pun; not everyone who comes from a Spanish speaking country *is* different in appearance from Anglo-Saxons.
A small anecdote: I once saw a program about pirates on Discovery, they interviewed a white history professor from Jamaica and of course he spoke English with the characteristic Jamaican accent. Looking at him I didn't expect it, but once you think about it - it is pretty much a "no-brainer".

Europe just won't drop the whole fascism thing will they... It doesn't even matter to me personally, but that still rubs me wrong. What business is it of the Gov't what I name my children?

yeah, that's better. then later on if he wants to switch to his middle name in highschool/college or whatever, he can. just do it when he goes to a new school, and he can tell everyone he meets his middle name is his name, if he likes that one better.

It's not that hard to do. My parents named me after my dad, but to avoid confusion always called me my middle name. So everyone knows me by my middle name ever since i was born.

You can name your kid whatever you like in Norway as long as it doesn't hurt the kid. Religious names is a gray area I think, depends what it is. Greek gods might be legal f ex, but probably not God or Allah f ex.

Like there's a guy called Espen Thoresen Værsogod Takkskalduha or something like that. He changed his name to it from Espen Thoresen. Meaning "here-you-go thank-you. If they disallow the name you want for him, you can talk him into changing it later and I suspect the rules are looser if it is a change to your own name.

There's books and sites dedicated to names where you can tell the meaning of the names, varieties of the same name and the name dates and even how many have the name. If you're going to make one up, it might as well be unique.

Now, heres some cool names.

Hanz

Vladimir
..

Well, you could call him "ForumfallWhiner" or "h4xX0r l337z0r r0xx0r l0lz0r" but that doesnt actually fit with whatever lastname you got. I suggest Hanz or Vladimir.

I like:

Gideon (nickname Gid)
Solomon (nickname sol)
Simon
Abaddon (nickname abe)
Aharon
Amittai
Elam
Ephraim (nickname eff)
Hagar (nickname heyg)

OR

Joseph
John
Friedrich (nickname freddy)

My last name is Hoffman, so I need a name that sounds good with that. I hate when people's first and last names don't flow nicely.

YAY! :D

Sascha ain't female if you're a rusky. Being a rusky should warrant being bullied in school, though.

Also I find your morbid fear of bullies very interesting, were you bullied because of your name in school? What do you care if your son gets the shit kicked out of him because some prepubescent (sp?) assholes dislike his name. It'll only make the kid tougher. Or he'll kill himself if he's a pussy, in which case he's not a worthy son anyway. Its win-win. So name the fucking kid Sue.

EDIT: I see Sue has already been suggested, awesome :D

Morbid fascination? LOL, if a kid gets his ass beat daily because he is a nerd, or a retard or something that is one thing. Having it done because you as a parent gave him a fucked up name is another however.

I'm all for toughening kids up, but setting them up for failure isn't the same as toughening them up.

My name is Eric though, for the record. Nothing weird about that. Though that damn movie fucked up my initials I never really got shit about that. (E.T.)

My sister on the other hand had a weird name... Zebrina... (Not Sabring, Zebrina...) I'm amazed she turned out to be a normal, well adjusted person. Most of the wierd named people I've met haven't done so well LOL. Sunshine, & Starbeam (two chicks I knew once upon a time) were seriously fucked in the head.

Yeah, I know a girl named Princess (I shit you not). She's not exactly crazy, but she never seemed to be happy and she was ridiculously shy. Though she was one of those "casual acquaintances" that one gets a lot of in high school, so maybe I'm wrong.

Bible names are awesome.

They sound manly, unique and they usually mean something cool.

Im kinda partial to Abaddon as it means destructor or some such.

its wierd that you picked the name of some towns though. Arent elam and ephraim still around?

Oo_

Why do you make this such a problem? You already have number 2 in your own name, just honor the tradition, copy your name and change the number to three. :ninja:

There are probably towns for most first and last names. What does that have to do with anything?
