So I want to build a cheap ass gaming rig so my girl can play w/ me if this damn game ever comes out. I have a case, DVD Roms, and HDD's laying around so I don't need any of that. And I don't want to spend a shit ton of money on a secondary rig either.

So I've came up w/ this... I know its not top of the line, but anyone got a better build for the same price?

I included a PS, in case I want to upgrade the video card later.

Get the Gigabyte HD3870 for $99. It is infinitely better. Also get 4GB if you're planning to put Vista on it.

Only if you use a "joystick". How do you think it got its name?

I know the 4850's are nice cards. I hadn't heard anything about the 3000 line from ATI though, if its better then the 8600 then maybe I'll do that.

Already included 4gigs of ram in the system. 2x2GB sticks of that G-Skill brand ram.

I've sure eventually I'll pick up a double pack of Vista Ultimate 64, but for now it'll run XP Pro. I have both 32, and 64 bit versions. Not sure which I'll use, as I've heard a lot of stuff doesn't run on xp64.

The HD3870 is much, much better than a 8600GT. Especially at $99 after MIR it is unbeatable in terms of bang for your buck. The HD3870 generally runs a tiny bit slower than an 8800GT.

Know anything about the brand "Diamond", they have a 3850 that is $99 w/ an additional 20 rebate, making it $79.

Usually I get more known brands, BFG, Asus, Evga, etc...

As far as I know AMD manufactures all cards, brands like Diamond just slap a sticker on them and include a bundle. Exceptions are custom cards like the Gigabyte HD3870, which has sooper seekrit special components that help save power or something.

There's nothing wrong with Diamond. It's a decent AMD brand. BFG / Evga are Nvidia only. Welcome to the world of AMD cards, where you'll see all kinds of new names like Sapphire, Visiontek and HIS. ;)

EDIT: Wait, don't get the 256MB HD3850 if that's the one you found. Make sure it's 512MB. 256MB doesn't cripple the HD3850 much (Unlike the 8800GT), but 512MB is always good to have nowadays.

I built a Rig about two years ago and reused HDD's I had laying around. And after gaming on it for a few months I wasn't pleased. I built another one last year and put some money into the HDD (10k RPM Drives). And that made more difference than dumping more memory into my box.

Best,

Phae

Ahh,

The last time I'd bought an ATI card (The 9200 I think), it was made by ATI. I'd seen a couple other brands but mostly you found ATI branded ATI cards. I just assumed w/ AMD buying them out they decided to go the Nvidia route. I guess that is what I get for assuming lol.

Good info though, thanks. :)

Aye, I plan on building another one in a few months that will replace my current rig. That'll have a better CPU, MOBO, and have a better video card. (likely the 4850 or 70) And I may go w/ a Raptor for my boot drive. I want to setup this rig first so we both have something that'll play, then worry about getting mine upgraded.

I'd wait until the game or at least beta actually rolls out before buying anything (I mean, seriously, it's darkfall). Computer parts improve so much over a relatively short amount of time, even the comp I built around 6 months ago is like 30-40% cheaper now than it was then.

By then maybe you'll have your newer computer and can just set up your old one for her to play on.
