"Developer Razorwax takes us to visit Salthorpe, a human fishing village in a region plagued by goblins and kobolds."

Mods, please move this to news.

As always, very nice screenshots.
Salthorpe is a fishing village on the west coast of Riada, the largest lake in central Mercia.
The river Eanna connects this area to the capital of Sanguine, which lies just a short distance to the south.
The villages of Silverley and Lainstone are also close, to the east and west respectively.

This means that sailing will be a good way to travel, if rivers connect the most of the land.
I would like to know, if there is only human "Standard" boats, or there is boats for every race (Mahirim ? Dwarves ?)

Can't confirm it, but I would hope that boats are as different in appearance from each other as each race's housing is. It would make sense that a Dwarven boat would be slightly smaller in size than a Human boat and that an alfar boat would be entirely closed in to keep out the sun. Ork ships would seem to be more war-built, while Mirdain boats would probably be very fancy in design and such.

Something to note on the screenshots, in the screenshot of the boat close-up, as well as the shot with the bridge in the background, you can see shop signs hanging off the buildings. Hopefully this is a good indication that players will be able to put out their own shop signs with maybe a logo, guild emblem, or chosen text on it.

The water also looks excellent in my opinion. I may be wrong, but it seems like we are seeing some wind effects in the first screenshot. The boat is slightly tilted toward the docks in a way that looks as though the wind is blowing strongly in the opposite direction, which is causing the sails to blow away from the dock and the ship is dipped down in the water on the dock side, to compensate.

nice, boat looks nice, water looks decent, wonder if it actually changes states like from rough seas to calm and stuff, gj guys

I wounder if the sloop (looks like one to me) is a player control ship or a ship like in EQ that transport you to another place.

I hope its not just there for eye candy though I do like the way the boat looks like.

Keep up the good work Dev's!!!

These are the kind of screen shots I love. Real parts of the land. Im impressed with the boats and water. I hope that body of water we saw wasnt the lake, but an inlet or something.

Perhaps next they can show us a player city demo, the basic form of a city with a clanstone. That would be sweet. Or just more npc cities :)

It seems that it does, if you remember the short movie we saw of the boat rocking on the waves, from the Combine's website, it's indication that the water changes, or atleast is rougher in some areas. If I had to take a guess at it, I would say that the water likely gets rougher the further away from land you are and probably changes with the weather. It wouldn't make alot of sense just to have calm water inland and all the seas be as rough as we've seen in the short video. Hopefully it works in a realistic manner, or maybe a developer could give us some details.

To make matters worse for the locals, a spate of kidnappings indicate the presence of the dreaded Church of Malaut.

I want more info on this!

Great job with the water. You can tell just from the look at it that there's some physics involved. I wonder if the humans of Salthorpe will have a big fleet?

I like the water also very much.

I think when game starts it won't have. But when the game and time advances more players and NPC's will come to Salthorpe.
This ship is maybe just a little fishing ship from a NPC who can sell his fish.
Or maybe a captain who want to let you cross the river...

Very nice screenshots, the graphics are better and better. I just think that the trees should have more branches and leaves. Besides that, it's all good. ;)

I think it's pretty strange, the boat looks good, the water is very detailed, but still the ground looks not nearly as detailed, and the houses not nearly as good as the boat  mighty weird. hope they can get the ground as detailed as the water is, with all the rimpling and such.

Well i must say these screenies look better then the ones of last week

I agree, the water and the boats look great. The ground and the sky is still a bit underdeveloped though.

Looks nice, specially the sky. I love it with every screen shot more! Now imagine that screenshot, with moving, changing clouds!! *dreamy sigh*

everything looks great but im wondering why the dock is so small? How will more than 1 boat dock there at a time? Do ships disappear when you dock or something?

I can now say that the devs have impressed me. They have truly impressed me.

Now, I am just down to complaining about the sky. It seems to dive right into the horizon, instead of spanning onward for miles and miles before finally disappearing.

But otherwise, I am definately satisfied.

Most importantly, I just about zoned to while reading the description of the town. It induced a some heavy daydreaming.

I'm entertaining a certain hope that the boat depicted is a mere fishing yacht, and that Galleons and Frigates are still to come. :D

As fishing villages and boats go, though, this looks awesome.

Enuf compliments on the lovely dreamy waterand sky.
Problem is, no ship sits at dock with full sails. they have to be furled and tied at rest. Otherwise the boat will beat itself to death on the docks or pull the anchor. Norways' known for its sailors, guys

houses and water are realy nice!!
But ground and trees are ugly :-//.
Ground looks like one texture and tress are too naked.
Sky look strange like a ball :-//.Do you know what i mean? Sorry fo english, but i think cloud going to fast down, world seem to be a small ball (1km)

By seeing the fishing boat (which is very nice even though theres no flag on it), a question came to me. Lets say you went fishing all day and make a full load of fish in your boat. You come back to town to sell it. How will that works? You cant get a full load of fishes on you. Will there be a certain range around the ship, that if a npc vendor is in it you can sell from your ship? Anyone know anything about that? Will you have to get them down a small patch at the time to sell the whole load?

Yes, this is why it's good to keep in mind that the game is still in beta. These things can and probably will, be changed with time.
Every detail noticed, even in Beta. Complaints about stuff they can fix are better than some other kinds cough*care cough*grief houses and water are realy nice!!

Sorry fo english, but i think cloud going to fast down, world seem to be a small ball (1km) I think the view of the clouds could be improved by making the "roundness" or "puffyness" decrease nearer the horizon. I mean, the cloud bottoms are all you can see far away, and they are more flat than round.

Trees like that maybe are all that grow in places where the winter's bad and the soil is poor. Wait to see the Elven lands before complaining.

Very cool. I approve of the fact alone that there will actually be fishing villages in the game. Nothing like MMORPGs that have cities placed randomly on the map with seemingly no purpose, uh? I look forward to seeing and visiting more cities with such life in them.

Too bad there was no sneak peak into game mechanics, unlike the last village's stone mining.

Interesting point Riva, I too would love to know such things.
Also, I'd love to know whether you can catch other things besides fish (ala UO) :)

If the load was to great for one player to carry in a single trip I would presume they would use a cart or caravan to trasnport their goods to the markets, this would be a suitable solution.

Riva
10-31-2003, 10:23 PM
With that solution it means you cant sell in every town. You have to be able to buy or own a cart to do it. I agree that it is what you have to do when village is far, but in those pictures, the village is really close to the boat. I would hate it to buy a cart to do 10 meters to be able to sell. Maybe they could put a vendor on the decks that would buy fish near the ship.

Chloe
11-02-2003, 11:16 AM
I'm pretty sure they said once that weight issues and carrying abilities aren't something they're gonna make overly realistic, for obvious reasons... but if for any reason you needed a cart or a helping hand... oh well.. I'm sure you'd be smart enough to not try to take a boatload of 1000 guppies w/o pre-planning your method of unloading..

RIGHT?
