Being "white" isn't something I've done, but the "white man" has certainly done a lot for itself throughout history. Albeit some fucked up methods may have been used, but having something to regret doesn't discount what there is to be proud of.

My thought is that race would be significantly less important in today's society if the federal government were not constantly making it an issue.

Obviously racism existed before these laws, but these laws can create hate and anger that were not there before. Essentially, if we believe "all mean are created equal" then we should all have equal rights. If the public's perception of anti-discrimination laws is that one race has an advantage, there will be jealousy and anger towards that race where there could have been none before.

Whether or not you think anti-discrimination laws do grant unfair advantages isn't too relevant, what's relevant is if the general public thinks this and it's my opinion that they do.

African slavery was not like American slavery. African slaves, while they were beneath the rest of the nation that captured them they were considered prisoners of war and not harshly treated (of course there are exceptions to every thing). They were even permitted to marry into the nation and work their way up to respectable positions in the nation.

There is no double standard for racism and I don’t think anyone in this thread said there was. Just a historical difference in how words and actions are interpreted.

Just as the black panthers were necessary in their own time. Native Americans did very much in their own way do the same when it came to trying to fight back, though they failed.
