View Full Version : Dreamlords - The Reawakening!

So, Dreamlords went free to play today. I'm going to start download it and play as soon as I get home to my own computer, and start my own "clan"-thingy.
Anyone in forumfall is welcome to join.
This thread is particilarilly for you, Alfaroverall, since you were interested in this RPG-RTS MMORPG not so long time ago.
For those of you who do not know what Dreamlords is, check this link out:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreamlords (it's not much though)
Official website: www.dreamlords.com
I haven't played it in like a year, but it was highly addictive and quite fun, actually. Even though most of the game (everything except the combat/skirmishes) is played in a browser and turn-based.
I can't wait to see what the "Reawakening" "patch" has done to the game, and F2P might be very good for it, since it previously lacked a large player-base.

ohh nice soon as i get my own comuter runing i'll ceck it out if i hear good things about it. i saw it before it even hit beta like 6 months before and was a bit upset when i foud out they were going to make it p2p. good news and i look forward to the news.

It's now available to play, as of 20 minutes ago.
Edit: First impression on the game.
Much has changed since the old days when I played. The game is currently not played in the web browser much at all, but you still have the option to do some things in it. (if you're not at your own computer)
The game is a bit better graphically, but not much has improved there. It is still sexy, though, and totally playable.
There seems to be more quests in it, which are always fun.
The game has improved loads, and you should definately try it out if you haven't.
Also, you can pay IRL money for tribute (some kind of currency that improves some stuff), but you can also apparently PvP for them, which is awesome.
The main game is still pretty much the same even if they decided to make it F2P now.

I had heard about this (I'm still on their email list), and have definitely considered giving it another roll. I always rather liked the premise; the only substantive issues that I noticed was that the process of clearing your patria of monsters was tedious and that PvP couldn't really be gotten into if you joined the game a decent ways into a given Era. (The other issues I had were fundamental to the game design and so were things that I really couldn't criticize so much as dislike.) That Era issue looks like it might be significant this time around; the beta testers of The Reawakening know the ins and outs of the game, have some bonus tribute, and have 6 days up on players who start today.
Hell, I'll give it a shot now, off to dl the client. Hopefully this "tribute" system doesn't end up being a big deal.

I like it too, but it is far from a hardcore game. Since even if you grind up resources like hell, you will still have to wait for your population to grow and techs to finish.
It's a fun game like cybernations, that you can play for a little more than once a day. And it includes in-game graphics and a combat system.

As far as I know though, Tiarillir, you can play it a bit more hardcore near the middle to the end of the Era, as PvP actually starts to get rolling. I could be wrong, though.
Sadly I'm a terrible microer :(

Well I've only played in the first late beta, so I haven't played for more than a few weeks. You may be right though. But I actually like the concept of having it be RL-time based to a certain point.
The game has this charm that's hard to grasp.

Looks nice, but at half a gig download I'm going to have to wait until my net picks up again. My family has this annoying habit of watching movies and Veronica Mars episodes online when I'm sleeping.

Well, I like the new shiny interface; the emphasis on browser management was silly in the first place imo. I stopped for a little while now because I got kinda daunted after the tutorial. They taught me the obvious crap that any RTS player already knows and then left me with this really huge and complex interface and no real idea on where to go next. So I'll come back to it in a bit.

I just won my first PvP battle and can easily say that it was more fun than the PvE battles.
If you've got nothing else to play, Dreamlords is a good time killer. If you've got a good game you enjoy, you might want to stick to it.

Hmm...I'm still trying to decide if I want to stick to this, since I am still enjoying EVE. Hmm...I'll probably want something to do when there's no pvp action going on, since I'll be waiting 3 months to be able to fly a ship that'll only cost ~100 mil with fittings. So yeah, I'll probably try and play. My in-game name is Konungr.

Well, I'm enjoying the game so far, I like the new mission system better than the old one, but now I've cleared all the 1-3 zones and don't know what to do other than do them again for now. I don't want to risk the 2-4 missions just yet, but I did just learn how to increase my expedition size, so that'll make things a bit easier.
Also, I hear a lot about research, but don't seem to see where exactly to do that (and I have checked the browser client).

Oh my god, that tab is TINY. Why is it so damn tiny?!
Thanks though. And it seems rather clear that your research speeds up as you get more gnosis and more people.
Also, I play EVE. This is nothing to me. :)

Learning a lot of stuff in general chat...also looking like I'm finally making some progress. Unfortunately it took me so long to discover the existence of research that I'm kind of struggling to get population and housing.
Aaand...I just learned of the immense failure that is this game's version of the "item mall": you can't tech past like the third tier without subscribing, which is only doable in 6 and 12 month intervals. So much for F2P; how the hell are you supposed to have a shot without being able to tech past the 3rd tier?
Tribute I could live with, it's just a minor edge mainly, and it can make the game easier for you by making you get workers faster. But that's just ridiculous. If you're gonna do that, just keep the game P2P.
So is this game browser based or client based?
I just dont understand how the game works. Can someone fill me in,, it looks fun.

It's...complicated. There is some management aspect in the browser that controls your research, housing, buildings, etc. The remainder of the game is played in the client.
Basically, to start, you have to get gnosis, which is kind of like experience points. You do this by killing monsters on your patria. With more gnosis you get more people, and with people you can do stuff, including research, make more units, etc. Once you've got an army assembled you can start getting into pvp...and I don't quite understand all of how that works just yet.
Also, early on, you should convert all of your spoils except soul shards, weapons and armor, wood, stone, and metal to gnosis. Keep the soul shards for things like building houses, and equip the weapons and armor to what troops you have. Keep the wood, stone, and metal for new buildings. Also, assign plenty of workers to your training ground, you need 31 to be able to use 3 units at a time instead of 2 (yes I did just say that). I'd put the rest on your ministry building for now and skip out on the hospital and temple of conquest. I made the mistake of not doing the same :(
hmmm seems werid.... Might just have to download it and try it.
It looks fun and I can see it being fun but kind of werid it is both browser and client base...maybe my duel monitors will come in handly agian.

Though it's inaccurate, it's kind of like the browser stuff is turn-based and the client stuff is real time. You mostly do stuff in the browser right after you do stuff in the client.
Hmm I'll download this and give er a try I guess...

I just have to say the PvP in this game is awesome. It's no Company of Heroes, no WiC, no Dawn of War, but it sure is fun. The management can be a little slow, but it just gives you more time for PvP ;)
Also, the skill = grind is very low in this game. You won't improve very much by playing night and day. And there are "PvP" levels too, so that you are bound to one place when you're one level.
There seems to be a way to exploit this a little atm though, but I'm sure it'll be fixed soon. Also, the guys that stay at your PvP level will not have much of an advantage - except their skills and microing.
I have to say I enjoy it very much, and you should definately try it out if you enjoy RTS games with some RPG in them.

Tiarillir is right. To continuously get workers (which you pretty much have to do to compete) you end up having to pve about 1 hour a day (and you can knock out multiple days in one session). You get some advantage from continuing to pve (your dreamlord, who is but one of your units, will get stronger) but it's not huge.
One thing about the game that I kind of don't like, however, is that you're almost always in a position where someone in your pvp area is better than you. In the first area, the range of pvp levels is 1-3; then it's 2-6, and then 4-9. Whenever you're not 3, 6, or 9, someone is significantly better than you. It's not enough that they win by default (though in the first zone it kind of is) but it makes it hard. As an example, we're pretty much all pvp level 4 at the moment, and we tried to take some territory in the 4-9 area (ask Darq why we didn't just go for the 2-6 :bang:) For a while we actually did quite well, but then a single guy with pvp level 8 showed up and just beat the shit out of us almost singlehandedly. Now we're on the 2-6 and it's quite a ways more competitive, though there are some AMAZING level 6 players (it's not just that they're level 6, but also that their micro is amazing).
Pardon my rant...
The thread title is a lot like Dominions 3: The Awakening :ohno::ohno:

hehe alfa if you 2 didn't chicken out we'd now be protected by a [V] buffer instead of SSR, we lost alot just to get there , and had some bad luck with Til crashing else we'd own the 6 territories there. but then you were like "we stand no chance he's raping us". i lost a good 8 units getting there and it was all for nothing. so now we can fight on 2-6 and won't see any tribute because it's swarmed with people trying to attack just for kicks.
I've followed Jere's advice and supported him when he was fighting.
and we had the numbers the SSR guy would've made a mistake some time, he already started weakening strategically.

I didn't think we stood no chance period, I just thought that it wouldn't take very long for him to take us down without all of us online. I also think that he was just messing with us, racking up wins and battle rating without really caring that much about territory and, perhaps more importantly, without losing anything. And he definitely did do that.
But yeah, new day new hope I s'pose. Fairly soon we'll put this behind us too as we get kicked back to sacred valley...and then go further after that. :)

This era isn't really that important though (an era usually lasts 1-2 months, then the game resets), since we all made quite some mistakes in the beginning. Let's just focus on having fun, training, and getting some more people to the CV. Then next Era we can rape them!

I can go with that too.
I wonder how the era changes work now though. In the old version of the game, a given convergence would satisfy certain conditions (which involved both pve and pvp) and then they would basically "win" and the game would reset. I wonder how it works now.
