Beorg here, and as I surf YouTube for more Urban Ninja videos, I spotted something that caught my eye as an advertisement for EvE. It looks interesting, but I have no idea how the game works. Can somebody give me some insight into this game? It seems like a viable alternative to WoW as I pass the time for Darkfall.

Urban Ninja? You mean Parkour? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkHPQPozDRs)

And in relation to Eve: If you want to have to be awake when playing a game, don't buy eve.

Indeed it is! Let me see, where do I start...
Well, the game is FFA PVP once you exit "high security" space, which comprises about 1/4 of the world. PvP is possible within high security space but will lead to CONCORD, and NPC group with extremely powerful ships, quickly attacking you. This leads to occasional suicide attacks in high security space.
The looting system is partial loot of modules with the remainder of the ship being permanently destroyed.
Much of the game is played with a corporation, EVE's version of clans, which can include conflict amongst corporations over entire star systems with the sovereignty system. This is really what lies at the heart of the entire game.
The combat system is not one of EVE's strong points, with basic combat being comprised of pressing a button to keep your ship at a certain distance from your target and then clicking your weapons to have them automatically fire, with their accuracy dictated by various factors. More complex combat is a bit more dynamic, however.
EVE's skill system involves training in real time, which is sort of a double-edged sword. It allows you to get some advancement while not playing, but it also keeps people who have been playing longer than you at a permanent advantage over you...to some extent. You can only use so many skills at a time, and just because they can fly dreadnoughts doesn't mean they'll beat you in their battlecruiser.
Any more specific questions?

How does the combat work?
What view do you play in? Ex. Can you see an avatar you play as?
Can you give me a 0-10 rating on this game?

In combat you basically click on the enemy, click orbit, and attack until it croaks. You do nothing during combat except drink a handy beer.
You play in third-person, you do not see your avatar. The devs have plans to implement an avatar-walk-around thing inside the space stations.
Rating 0-10: IMO, with around three hours of playtime under my belt, I'd give it a 10.
It's incredibly complex and I really would play it if I didn't end up ramming my head against my desk and breaking my keyboard.

You have just heard of EvE? Look it up on the official site, it would make more sense. The game homes the coolest in-game and our of game drama, ever.

I did, I read about the 5 warring factions, watched the Scope Galactic News thing. It looks interesting, but from somebody who's been playing Medieval combat-like games for the past 5-6 years, it all seems quite foreign when thrown 35,000 years into the future.

err...
I'm pretty sure they are. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freerunning)
Freerunning is the American version, Parkour is the French version.
They're slightly different, but mostly the same concept.

Freerunning is the American version, Parkour is the French version.
However, free running and parkour are separate, distinct concepts — a distinction which is often missed due to the aesthetic similarities. Parkour as a discipline comprises efficiency, whilst free running embodies complete freedom of movement — and includes many acrobatic manoeuvres. Although often the two are physically similar, the mindsets of each are vastly different.[1] The founder Sébastien Foucan defines free running as a discipline to self development, following your own way.
David Belle > Sébastien Foucan. But they're both french.

I'd give it a 9. It has its flaws, definitely. Its combat system would benefit greatly from being changed to FPS, or at least faster in pace. With that change would logically come an acceleration of the game as a whole (it takes at least a month to experience the "real game" and really more like 2-3 months). Walking in stations (to be implemented in the next year or two), atmospheric flight (same thing), and landing on planets (not expected anytime soon) would also be welcome additions. An amazing addition would be assembling your own ships from components. Honestly, I can think of few other ways to make the game better than those.

No.
Le Parkour is a philosophy about reaching goals and self-superation.
Free Running is a soon-to-be XGame about body tricks.

Eve is really interesting. I have 3 active accounts with characters between 18-22 million SP that I've tinkered around with for years, I love reading about the game, the forums, and buying and selling in game. I've only PvP'd like 4 times, and I've probably got less than 3 days total playtime under my belt since I started.
Eve is an absolutely breathtaking game, but for some reason I just can't get into it enough to enjoy it. I'm torn between just going out for some maverick PvP in a frigate, and getting all of the top scale uber shit that everyone talks about. Chalk on the fact that all these guys talk about is this mod this and that mod that. How uber their dreadnought is etc etc. Rarely does anyone talk about PvP strategy that I've seen. So it's easy to get turned off if you don't put yourself in the right place.
Emphasize that....put yourself in the right place with the right people. That's the difference between enjoying the game and being bored out of your mind.

Alright...A few more questions...
How much does it cost?
How is the community? Ex. Active, inactive. Hostile, friendly?

ok, but could you rank some others mmorpgs you happen to know, so that we could have a parameter to that 9 you gave? What you say about WoW, AoC, SB, AC, Hello Kitty Online?

Free for 14 days, $20 USD (and euros, with VAT included) for the first month, $15 USD (again, same thing for euros) for subsequent months.
The community is very active. There are between 200,000 and 300,000 subscribers on one server, and there are between 10,000 and 40,000 people on the server pretty much 23 hours of the day (the other hour is downtime). Some people are hostile, others are friendly. It's not that hard to find a corp if you're looking for one, though.

Having only played WoW of that lot, I'll rate it. 7.5 as a game in general, 5 as a game that I'd actually like to play. The game is god damned polished, its combat mechanics are actually rather nice (compared to most MMOs, including EVE) and it gives you quests to do for most of the way that, although "grindy", ease the grind by a lot. The grind is also shorter than it is in most MMOs. I give it the 5 because it doesn't have any sort of PvP gameplay that is really substantiated, which is the majority of what I'm looking for to hold me into an MMO.
Note that I give EVE a 9 on both fronts.

It was hard to get into. Don't play unless you have 2-5 months to play (minimum).

QFT. Empyrean Age was a bad idea, IMO. I'll probably still participate with my corp, and it's probably not a terrible idea as a way for some newer players (less than 3 months in, for example) to get their foot in the proverbial door to PvP, but I just don't think it'll provide all that much benefit to the game as a whole.
For the record, Empyrean Age is an almost brand new expansion, released within the last week, which introduced, among other things, the feature of factional warfare, which is a conflict system amongst the different races. The caldari and amarr are at war with the gallente and minmatar. You don't have to participate if you don't want to; participation is based on joining a faction's militia, which is not necessarily based on your race (an amarr can join the minmatar militia if he wishes to do so). The actual mechanics of factional warfare are rather complicated, and I don't know all of them, so I won't try to explain them.

Also, could anyone playing EVE tell me what has changed in the game now with empyrean age and the racial conflict thingy?

The game is complex and filled with drama. The depth is incredible and the PvP system is one of the most hardcore in the MMO world.
But my god, it is probably the most boring thing on the face of the earth. You will kill yourself playing this game.
