Okay, I'm finally installing Ubuntu on a machine at home. I remember seeing some awesome UI's and shit before on here. Can anyone link in some great stuff for it?

I've been considering getting Ubuntu for a while. That is insanely hoss, and I think I'm gonna get it now.

Is it a lot more useful than compiz fusion? It took me a while to get that working, so I'm kinda partial.

Fuck fluxbox, it's not that good. Compiz is better. It comes standard in Ubuntu 8.10, which I guess you got, you just need to install the "simple cmss" from the add/remove thingy to enable it. I have it on my office computer, and I run VMWare Workstation with WinXP on one of its 4 rotating desktops so I can use this fucking IE7-specific webapp that won't run in emulated IE versions in linux because of all its activex shit.
If you took any more steps than installing the simple cmss thingy, you probably just wound up re-installing it with old ass instructions. It's a snap to enable in 8.10.

It came installed with the Heron version (whatever the fuck it is) and I just had to activate it. However, something was busted on that, so it took me awhile of playing around with it to get it working (using google). I like it though, was just wondering if fluxbox was massively better.

Oh, well it's not. It's worse.... it's newer, has a lot more bugs, maybe it has the potential to be better but I doubt it. In any event, it sucks by comparison right now. It only has partial gnome support, which is what Ubuntu uses by default. I might fuck with it in the future if they get full gnome integration, but I'm not a big fan of KDE.

Well, that settles that then.

Use Backtrack (http://www.remote-exploit.org/backtrack.html) instead of Ubuntu. It comes with everything you'll ever need Linux for.

If you want something secure, forget Linux, use BSD.
hm well
fluxbox is lightweight
you don't really have a traditional desktop, altough you could.
navigate between virtual screens with alt+f? or the mousewheel
rmb = menu
menu = simple textfile
in reality you're only using a few programs very often so put them into your rightclick menu for fast access
the rest? open aterm Eterm xterm whatever and run it from there. bind keys to oftenly used commands like open browser , take screenshot , open terminal, read mails, open irc client, newsreader.
doesn't really matter what kind of app you're running as it's just a window manager. gnome is using gtk, kde is using qt.
tbh never tried compiz-fusion so i'm going to try it now

You should use compiz with the cube effect. Pretty neat.

Any tips on installing NWN2? I've been searching google, but so far no joy. I've got directx working and I think I have all the .dll's needed for it, but I keep getting errors that certain datax.cab files are not ready when installing and they are all on the same dvd.

XFCE, its boss and uses extremely tiny amounts of your systems power. You being an IT guy means your smart enough to work it. Also its not as pretty but thats what makes it so damn fast.

The right click to get at all your menus makes it hoss no more stupid fucking taskbars n shit.

Linux makes me feel retarded. I use a box at work to run scripts, but past that I don't have much experience with it. I keep trying to use Cisco IOS commands and it keeps laughing at me. :(

If you got a lot of time on your hands to configure shit there is only one way to go:

(Also you shouldn't mind a piece of software that has been in alpha stage for 5 years, but since you are here anyways ... )

Holy shit. Today is a slow day.
if you want XFCE just install xubuntu. http://www.xubuntu.org/
XFCE is a little buggier, but gotta love an OS that uses like < 256 megs of ram.

The latest version of Ubuntu already has Compiz installed, you just need to turn it on.
I'm not in Linux right now, but I know it's in a menu called "appearances".
