Hey guys, how are all of you? I decided you know.. its been a few weeks since ive been flamed to hell.. so Id post this thread.
Actually I am posting this out of genuine honesty and wanted to show an opportunity to those so inclined.
I picked up Vanguard on a whim.. my girlfriend and I were at Best buy or circuit city or somehere like that and we were both really drunk. In the bargain bin there was a bunch of crap.. she picked up vanguard and said we should try it.. i tried to explain that it was an epic failure but I was drunk and I ended up buying it... it was $20 for two copies...
anyway my point, the game is good... really it is...
It runs great, good frame rate and nice graphics.. which is really crazy to me after all I heard about it.. it took a bit of adjusting ofcourse but it works.. aparent they release a big patch the day we got it.. and now it runs good...
This game is nothing like everyones Darkfall/New UO wet dream... if that is what you expect or all you want u can skip to the reply button and tell me im an asshole right now =D
This game, in my opinion is by far the best game available right now, with the possible exception of "special" UO shards, but i mean honestly how long can you play those.. i did for years.. its old now. This game is a throwback to games that wernt nearly as good as UO, like Everquest and Asherons Call (on a non-pvp server) These games ruined UO esentially so why would you want to play them? the reason is because these games were SUBTANTIALLY better that what an MMO is today (WoW/AOC)
this is a PvE, class based game
the classes are good, they are very different from eachother and they work off eachother.. great crafting system.. i wish that Darkfall would rip it off because it takes effort and actual player skill to make the very best "GM" stuff. The world is massive, and beautiful and COMPLETELY UNINSTANCED.. I was recently in a dungeon so huge it was incredible.. and i just walked in without zoning, i met people inside and quested with them.. i mean that just dosent happen anymore.. it was tough as well.. im a Bloodmage and its alot of fun because its a healer who can also do alot of dammage.. but im squishy as hell so I cant pull agro off the tanks or i die.. but i need to deal dammage and heal them and myself at the same time when needed..
Anyway, check it out if you want.. its the best game out (MMO wise), i am completely convinced of this... if PvE worlds must be so popular this is what they should be.. a huge uninstanced world with alot to do.. great classes, and challanges.. uninstanced player housing, ability to craft boats and explore islands.. ect
There is no trial btw, but if you try you can get a buddy key.. a trial is coming soon i hear tho... or you could go buy the game its cheap as hell.. ebay sells em for like $5 each
get past like lvl 10 before you judge.. its a bit slow at first

it is pronounced "dosent" but you spell it doesn't.
anyways, I have a friend playing Vanguard and he is totally enjoying it... the Arena, the crafting, the everything..
might give it a try soon...

Most people here have tried Vanguard for themselves and figured out is sucks. Most people on here consider themselves gamers, and we pick up a game when it comes out to see if we like it. Vanguard was decided to be crap... about a year ago? I was at my house and not my dorm, so I think it was last summer.
It's not for most people that spend time of the DF forums. We like the UO/Eve/SB style of gaming. PvE games have their own market, DF fanboys are not in that demographic. Sorry, the game sucks. The only good part was non-instanced. So the dungeons had good fights for control. Which then just got annoying because you had to spend time in groups guarding the entrance before your group was allowed to go in (at least the way most clans did it). Well maybe one more part I enjoyed (most didn't) was the politics path. That little card game was fun before you had to grind faction points for hours on end.

Nice post btw!

It was decent for a month and a half. Not a bad game, but the grind eventually turned me off, plus I played it while the total number of pvp bugs and class imbalance was at its worst.

As I said, if you want your New UO then dont bother, New UO is ofcourse what I want as well.. but it does not exist
that being said, playing the game a year ago or even 6 months ago is no representation of what it is today...
and I suggest you dont play on the PvP server.. its dead and pvp is pointless in a lvl based game anyway
Seradon has the most population and i see people everywhere i go when I play
I would like to play Vanguard again, BUT I am too much of a cheap ass to pay monthy for a game like that, I do not beleive there is an emu yet but if there is someone please enlighten me :)

I played it for over a year. I really enjoyed it until the last month I played where it turned into a MASSIVE grind and the server emptied out.

I give that game two thumbs up for delivering what almost no other game does atm: no instancing and no zoning.
But would you tell us what the community is like? Do people talk to each other? Do people roleplay?
How about some screenshots of your char? (if you have time).

Hmmmm. Vanguard wasn't THAT bad, except for the total lack of consequence to pvp death, but tbh with so many other time constraints I'd rather be having sex or just plain running around with my girlfriend than buying or playing pve games with her.

I agree this is the best MMO out right now. Like the OP said it is nothing like darkfall, but it is still a fun game. I have no technical problems and the leveling is actually FUN!!?!? Really really encourage you to take a first(or second) look at Vanguard.
yeah vanguards a good waste of time
refreshing altough the leveling pace could be faster
good enough game to kill time

I've heard a lot of people saying the same thing. I played at launch and found it utterly frustrating. FFAPVP server was just an exercise in frustration because 20 lv5 noobs had no chance against three or four lv20s spawncamping. RvR server was ok, but it was just so fucking grindy. It was what it billed itself to be, a spiritual successor to EQ1, a hardcore PvE game. Honestly, that's not that bad, I can't say that I never had fun with EQ. But at launch it was a bug ridden sack of shit too. It didn't help that fucking EVERYBODY played a cleric, best solo class in the game. I tried playing monk but it got boring very quickly, nobody wanted a low level monk for a group and monks sucked dick at solo. Clerics were solo gods, I could solo orange 3 dots and yellow 4 dots without much trouble. Only issue that caused was eventually soloing gave way to grouping in xp efficiency, and it was hard to get a group as a cleric. I took part in many 3 or 4 cleric groups.
If you ask me though, EQ2 is the best mainstream MMO out there when it comes to PvP. You can go into exile status to get FFAPVP (you can do this at any level so you can protect yourself from lowbie gankers by sticking with a faction until you get to 80), you get loot from enemy players (a good chunk of their onhand cash and a chance at any item in their inventory that isn't NO-TRADE or attuned) and class balance is actually somewhat decent.

@OP
I'm not going to flame you because what you wrote was your opinion. I tried Vanguard for a month and yes I did really enjoy the crafting process and I had fun the first 15 levels, but after then I'd really experienced everything once or 5 times...
It's basically the old Theme Park vs Sandbox thing. There is really only so many times you can go on all the rides before they get boring. As a PvE game it would be doing a hell of a lot better now if it wasn't fucked up at launch.
But personally with the knowledge of the freedom of Darkfall, I cannot play clone-MMO's anymore. Before I could play them for months because I could get over the boring, grinding and repetative crap because I would concentrate on the parts I really liked.
Like the PvP, being in a guild, and dungeons/raiding/group questing. I enjoy those three things and before they were enough to make me look over and pretend I didn't just spend 8 hours grinding to get like 2 levels ahead.
But I just can't do that anymore knowing that a game like Darkfall will be out and playable one day, a game where I'll be able to do those 3 things I love about MMO's, and I'll be able to do another dozen things I love about MMO's, minus a large chunk of shit I hate about MMO's.
So I quite Vanguard months ago, and until Darkfall I'm probably not going to play anything other then possibly EVE-Online.

They should have named it Vanguard: Saga of Same Old Shit
I bought it, played it for a total of about 8 hours.... concluded that there was nothing innovative there.... /uninstalled
-the end
I would imagine... at this point in time VSoSoS are trying to figure out how to keep their servers running with subscriptions they don't have... Really must suck to be in that position for a gaming company. But fear not! Mediocrity is on the rise! Funcom and aoc will be in the same position before long.

Mediocrity is definetly not on the rise. If you look at the actual subscription statistics you'll find that every clone-game usually fails horribly after the first few months of release. It goes high...reaching possibly as a high as 250k then goes down to 100k and below. Most games after a year settling between 50k and 70k if they aren't horrible failures at being mediocre clones.
The only games going strong in the millions are Lineage 2 and WoW. While EVE-Online as a full PvP, unique, non-clone MMO is currently in a steady rise.
For now AoC is too early to determine but if patterns mean anything it will decline sharply after the first six months to a year.

I suppose some peoples definition of mediocrity are different indeed.
meh Lineage 2 targets the pacific rim and i wouldnt call that such a great accomplishment. Wow is .. wow and hopefully they have made enough money to at least attempt to make a better game next time around.
AoC, i dont see any future for that game tbh, same with VSoSoS. Eve... well that is definitely a targeted audience and i don't think they can keep up the pace with subscriptions either.
Imo all its gona take is one decent game to come along and crush them all however its going to have to be a game that is well rounded and attracts all playstyles with some type of innovation.

Being the best game in a hopelessly shitty genre doesn't make it worth playing, let alone good. Personally I don't see why anyone would want to play a MMO that contains absolutely no innovation nor PvP and which main feature is mindless and endless grind. If I wanted to do monotone work in my free time I would at least make sure I get paid for it, but I guess my definition of 'fun' is just too far from the norm to relate.

dude stfu you just argue silly shit non stop. Your not a pro flamer and i don't think anyone cares what your posting so unless you add can to the discussion with some relevant criticism stfu.
I thought vanguard was okay i played it recently with the new development and the bug issues sorted but i wouldn't play it for large period of time in my opinion it gets old real fast but some of the ideas are pretty sound the crafting is great but am not a crafter.

If VG had pvp & city building/sieging like Shadowbane, it would be perfect. The PvP is pointless, atleast in WoW you get the option to buy gear from getting points with PvP.
What actualy is the crafting system like? i keep hearing its different but i cant seem to find an explanation of what makes it so different?

ok so you have to click through stages to build your stuff. there are different actions you can do at each stage, some add quality some don't. You have a pool of points and each of these actions takes a certain amount of points. the whole thing is to use as many points as possible in adding quality and not run out. Then there are complications that arrise and corresponding actions that you can do to eliminate the complications. but some complications are actualy helpful, so you need to pay attention. also you need to go through the same steps to make your materials. As well at certain points you can add catalysts to your material or you final product to add magic to it, or certain stats. so in essence you can make anything, anyway you want.
its a difficult system to master and in my opinion is much to difficult for the return you get from it. but its a hardcore crafters wet dream from what I have heard. although I found it boring, tedious and extremely fustrating.

Sounds interesting. Probably to complex for a game like darkfall in which production on mass will probably be needed. Thanks for the info!
The game is already dead.
They fucked up the release too bad for it to be salvageable. Also, it brings nothing new to the table. Sure it is pretty, but you are still playing WoW.

You didn't originally. If VG had done as well as WoW, i'm sure they'd be implementing some sort of system round about now.
Back in the starting days of WoW, the pvp was completely pointless. No titles, no Honor - nothing.
EDIT : Actually, it still is.

ya fromthe few people I knew who did it, it could take hours to build one thing. and if you were pked while doing it you lost all your mats and the thing you were working on.
ships and houses took days... think crafting 1000 boards 1-5 at a time.

That's just it... why waste time (and money) on a game that's not right for you?
I know the OP said don't bother if you are waiting on a UO style game, but I really can't swallow settling for less even 'temporarily' .
I'm sure VG is a lot better than it was, it couldn't have gotten much worse. It's still just a pointless grind without any world feel to it. It's more like WoW than EQ, just non instanced. The crafting was tedious when I tried it, just a mini game similar to diplomacy that you end up grinding out.
Yeah there is plenty to do and see, but it's all the same really...
Thats what I got out of it anyways.

Vanguard: Saga of Heros...dosent suck
Yes it does.
Don't get me wrong though, I'm a huge fan of games that make no discernment in spell effects between PvP and PvE. It's pretty fucking awesome to get chain slept for 60 seconds at a time in a fight watching your friends and enemies run around you while you go get a fucking coffee.

I played the first day it was released.
The first week was amazing fun.
But the game was nowhere near done, and ran horribly. I played agian a few months later... still bad. And again this past christmas when they let vets play for free. And it ran like poopy.
Are you gonna tell me that they finally fixed that ridiculous game so it runs past low on a moderate system?

It was ok.
But now i logged in like 3 weeks ago.
total server population was 322 players.
Fuck that.
Sony actually did a good job of salvaging the game after they forced sigil into early release, but its a little too late. Plus, the pvp is so imbalanced.

I've been playing VG for about 10 days now; my system barely qualifies for the requirements so it runs marginally playable ~18-20FPS (crawling in cities). Still, it's fun.
However I yesterday installed it on the machine of a friend, high-end:It's a Mac (dual boot) with two Core2 Xeon processors (so it's a quad systems in effect), Vista, 4GB RAM, 8800GTS, wide-screen (1920x1200) and I must say the game run perfectly smooth at max. (and i mean max.) settings. Was like 35-40 FPS everywhere (and we did not compile shaders at start).
It actually got me motivated to give my PC an upgrade.
