Racked about the same body count as most school shootings. It must have been one of those military "assault knives".

TOKYO, June 8 -- Screaming as he randomly stabbed shoppers with a hunting knife, a 25-year-old man killed seven people and injured 11 others at lunchtime Sunday in a Tokyo retail district.

Tomohiro Kato drove a white two-ton rental truck into a crowd of pedestrians, running over at least three people and then emerging from the truck with a large knife, according to police and witnesses.

Indiscriminately slashing and stabbing as he went, Kato then ran and walked through the center of the Akihabara neighborhood, where thousands of young men from Japan and around the world gather for electronic gadgets and comic books, computer games and nerdy fellowship.

Edit: To think of it, if everyone banned guns and started wearing Katanas and Knives instead, that would have been a pretty fucking awesome battle royale.

Things like this really speak for the overall stupidity of people. It took him multiple stabs to kill each one of them. So when he's attacking the first person with the knife, what's everyone else doing? They have two choices: kill him, or run away. The fact that he was able to repeatedly stab someone to death seven times blows my mind.

"Oh, look, that crazy man is stabbing that person. Oh no! Oh, look, now he's moving to someone else and stabbing them repeatedly. Oh no! He's stabbing them so much! Okay, now he's done with that person, he's moving on to another one! Whatever shall I do? Maybe I should just stand here and piss myself until he decides to come stab me!"

Obviously you've never walked down a crowded street in Tokyo. Also, he drove his car into a group of people, so surely some of them were injured and unable to run, even if there had been any room to run

LOL...military assault knife. We should start a movement to say it's ok for people to have butter knives, but anything more is military/police only.

I feel bad for the people killed, but at least they died knowing they weren't getting shot. Also, does anyone else not find it funny that he waded into a group of anime nerds who we all know picture themselves as modern day ninjas, and owned them?

I've been in the crowded streets of China and Hong Kong. Yes, it's packed. No, it is not impossible to get away from someone who has a knife. Unless, of course, everyone is too stupid to run away.

Ironically, the crowded streets are the best place for people to stop an idiot with a knife. If everyone around him actually tried to stop him, it would have been over in five seconds. But these were gamer and anime nerds, so I'm not surprised they got shanked.

In certain scenarios totally. However, I've done a lot of training (force on force) that was knive versus gun, so I feel confident in fighting an adversary with a knife.

Ban knives. We should really think about it.
In fact no, we should ban arms : every killer use his arms to drive a car, stab with a knife or fire a gun. Yup, ban arms or at least hands.

I disagree, I recently spin kicked an infant into a bucket of used needles. I used energy to do this. Instead of banning things, which people will do anyway, we should get rid of them. We use energy for all actions, including murder. Contact the ForumFall Physics club, we are going to get rid of all energy!

Actually, all I've seen is people talking about how much it sucked that it happend. Recently there was a US marine that raped a 13 year old japanese girl, that definately won some immigrant hate.

Hmmmm, so Otakus have been forgiven their crimes during the 80s. I better cancel that Otaku hunting trip then. But yeah there is some immigrant hate from the normal populace there, but then there's the remnants from the military party in power during WW2 who has some real proper immigrant hate going on.

Actually, Japan does not have a military. They are forming a defence force, I think. After WW2 Japan's consitution (which was written by the us, so was translated from english to japanese) says they cannot have any kind of military force. The US is put in a "Defender of Japan" status.

Someone

Damn, that should have been military party, not military part. And I do know that they're not allowed to have a proper military, which is in part why America has so many bases in the country and why US marines get the chacne to go around raping people.

But I did see one of those ultra-nationalistic criers/preachers people in Tokyo when I was there last time. He was using a megaphone to spread his message while some other guy was waving around a black flag. I couldn't really understand what he was saying but my friend said it was the same old stuff about how Japan is the greatest nation in the world and the foreigners are ruining it all so they needed to throw them all out.

They have a "Self Defense Force," which basically is a military. I read a Japanese Supreme Court case on someone challenging its constitutionality, and the court basically swept it under the rug and said "nothing to see here." Supposedly the SDF is only for defensive purposes, and isn't allowed to maintain any offensive units/gear/bases. Last year the party who wanted to remove that clause from the constitution got into power for the first time since 1993, but at the same time talk of changing the constitution has dwindled. So they have gotten their chance and decided to twiddle their thumbs on that issue. Reminds me of the dems taking congress here and changing absolutely nothing about the Iraq war.

The Yakuza don't care about foreigners in general, it's just when foreigners step into their business that they get pissed. The whole nightlife area of Roppongi was slowly taken over by the Chinese mob in the 80s or 90s and so the Japanese Yakuza went and imported a bunch of Nigerians/other Africans to get rid of the Chinese. Apparently they bit off more than they could chew, because the Nigerians still control that area. A lot of the older population still has some bitterness from WW2, but most of the younger people are perfectly fine with foreigners. Sometimes there is a bit of snobbishness towards foreigners though, especially ones who don't know the language, but most of the younger japs are pretty receptive. Hell I had guys buying me drinks at the bar, just because they think it's interesting to meet a foreigner.

The clause which says they are not allowed to have any sort of force is in one of my japanese textbooks. It is in english because the Japanese Constitution was written in english first, it states pretty clearly that Japan cannot have any armed forces. Japan needed some sort of military to get a better position in the UN, so they got one. Not that it matters, eventually China will rule the world anyway.

Not quite as easy without proper training with that knife.
