Hmm.... this is somewhat of an add-on to some of the character naming threads on here. A lot of people say "Hmm I will name my person Blahblahblah because it means samplesamplesample in ork"

Now, not to sound stupid or anything although I probably already have... w/e

Anyways! Is there some sort of universal dictionary for all rpgs? or does DF have an RPG? Or are people just being creative??

Keep in mind that Tolkien created several entire languages for different races. I'm sure lots of people are using those, even in games that aren't necessarily based on his books.

No, he didn't no create entire entire languages, he crated small parts of them.

And every fantasy-based game ever has is in some manner based on JRR Tolkins masterpiece.

This is true. The Orcs in World of Warcraft are incredibly violent, the Mirdain live in trees, Dwarves stereotypically live in mountains, we can ride leopards, and good is always pitted against evil.

All of Tolkein's books were such a success because we love hearing Good v. Evil stories. World War II is probably the most celebrated war in American history because of this.

But he did create the entire elf language. Just from his writing you can tell he adored the elves more than any other race in his books.

For SWG a whole wookie "dictionary" was made. RPers loved using bona fide wookie names.

I found a book with about 10 different Star Wars languages in it. Maybe some people use this too? Or maybe I'm just too big a fan?

Will DF have seperate languages as well? We know it won't be as in WoW where comunication between horde / alliance is imposible (since there are all race clans), but should there be some side languages?

Could an alfar warclan have an advantage in warfare since they can all speak in their race's tongue?

Will players of other races be capible of learning the skill of another's lanugage?

No, there'll be only one spoken language. Although I'd love it as additional fluff at some point.

Wont be much of an advantage. People will be using TS or Vent anyway.

That is like saying every modern war movie (guns) was based off WW2... Its just a stupid thing some people might like to say, which really has no basis in reality.

I would like to see racial languages included at some point, its just fluff, but could be semi-useful in some situations dealing with other clans.

Brings me back to my first week in SWG as a noob Wookiee who couldnt understand why no one understood him when he talked to them:-/ (Didnt know you have to teach the language for them to understand:P)

There is going to be an ingame voice chat system, people will be using that instead.

Anyway, back on topic.

If they are going to do a language in game, they should make it for the ancient peoples who one inhabited Agon, the Chaldeans. This way, players would have to decipher the launguage to unlock and solve puzzles in dungeons to get access to high end bosses and treasures.

If they are going to do a language in game, they should make it for the ancient peoples who one inhabited Agon, the Chaldeans. This way, players would have to decipher the launguage to unlock and solve puzzles in dungeons to get access to high end bosses and treasures.

The Chaldeans were still around in the time of Mirdain and Alfar, and being THE central authority of Agon at the time, it's not unreasonable to think thier language was what was assimilated into the common tongue, or at the very least it's still documented in Mirendil. Chaldea was sacked and sits in ruin, but the forest still stands, and we Elves are known for our lore keeping.

The idea of some intellectual challenge appeals to me though, but rather then see it as a cryptologists wet dream exclusively I think it should be broader in appeal. For instance, a Chaldean ruin houses deadly traps (and I'm not talking about most Oblivion style traps where the chain maces were clearly visible hanging from the roof and weren't particularly deadly even when you set them off (though, that one in the goblin fort tied to the ruined throne in the back room I liked. I dont know what possesed me to sit down, but that mace to the face made me stand up again)). These traps could be based on mechanical understanding, where you can see the mechanisms and decide which lever to pull. Or, just a tiled floor where certain parts just drop away. Even a typical monster that ressurects itself and grows more powerful upon death, but that would only attack if attacked. I swear, you'll have countless people bitching about it constantly coming back to life and killing them before one of them gets the bright idea not to pick a fight in the first place, and we can laugh at them and thier foolish confidence in armour and arms...
What else I would like to see is some foreshadowing throughout the world. For instance, some old musty tome tells the tale of a fort in it's prime, where the seated Lord's motto was "Freedom by force". Now, this fort lies in ruins but the final room holding all the good treasure is barred by lock and trap. You merely say the motto, or push corresponding stones or something, and you're in, however nothing in the ruin hints to this being the answer and the traps are particularly deadly. It'll take someone with a bit of creativity who has read the book to open the door, and the simplicity of it will drive people mad I reckon. It would be nice to see a practical use for a study of Agons lore and might also put the scholarly among us into a place of worth, rather then us being mere 'RPers'
