I am wondering how people feel about this.

Personally I prefer good gameplay, I don't really mind if the Trees move with the Breeze, Gameplay is more important.

Darkfall's graphics are good as is.

I love gameplay more than anything and will play a shitty looking game if the gameplay makes it worth it. Graphics aren't worth anything if the gameplay sucks.

Gameplay! As far as graphics go, I think they should serve to be immersive, rather than just super-realistic. Sometimes they go hand-in-hand, but not always.

Well, as long the gameplay is great I don't mind if the graphics is to... As long it doesn't impact on the gameplay.

Uhh gameplay, durr.

As long as the graphics are up to date, gameplay matters more. However, if the graphics really do take away from immersion and the experience, it's just not as fun.

Gameplay all the way!
Would never play a new good looking game for graphics.

if the graphics are good, thats a happy bonus.

If a game is not fun to play then it doesn’t matter how good the graphics are. I still play old games with outdated graphics, but I wouldn’t go back and play a shitty game just because of how good it looked.

Gameplay. After a while you get used any kind of graphics.

Graphics is more of a selling point, you don't need graphics to keep the players though.

Gameplay comes first definitely but the graphics need to be good enough for me as well. As long as the graphics don't make your eyes bleed then I'm fine with it though.

DF graphics are good enough... I'd be disappointed if a new game came out and didn't have better graphics than UO.

...
Gameplay.
Ive played Crysis, Gears of War, Hellgate and such.
And i'm glad that had finished the games. Glad because those ware games without gameplay, just graphics...

What i play nowdays ? Disgaea for PSP and Guitar Hero 3 for PC.
Guitar Hero is way so funny in multiplayer... And is just a game to match colors in certain time ¬¬ No graphics needed at all.

I want to play games like i play with girls. If you are having fun, to hell the graphics.

Game play, id play DFO even if it had EQ1 beta graphics so long as they did a good job implementing there promises... granted Better graphics are a + but Game play is where its at.

Runescape's graphics are the best I've seen in a game so far.

Balanced for me, because graphics adds a lot to the gameplay. Though i'd rather have a better gameplay than graphics.

Nuzor
05-13-2008, 10:15 PM
it's all about good gameplay for me, graphics are secondary, look at AoC, they have amazing graphics, very few people can actually enjoy the game with the graphics turned right up, it even limits the gameplay as they can only have 48x48 siege warfare, if i wanted that i would be play AV in WoW.

I digress, i would take graphics over gameplay all day.

Graphics need to be good enough you can play for hours w/o getting a headache/watering eyes. This can be taken care of by AA and high resolutions though.

Just remember UO concept. His graphics are now obsolete but the game still rules !!!

I love gameplay... But a new game that you pay 15$ a month for should have decent graphics to boot.

Septus
05-14-2008, 04:13 AM
Gameplay ftw. Photo-realism is so fucking overhyped in gaming, jesus fucking christ. I understand it broadens the market to include the retards who just like to go "ooo, it's like it's real!!" but gameplay is way more important.

I don't care if the game is cell shaded, or if it has the latest poly count, so long as they put enough effort into the graphics to make it clean.

Bad animations = bad gameplay.

Graphical representation of the gameplay is just as important as the gameplay....they coexist and cannot function without eachother (Unless its a text-based game). Theres also graphical themes to be considered as well...but overall, gameplay is more important.

I play MMO's for the game play. I became interested in Darkfall because I fell victim to the idea that DF is gona be all about game play. (I'm still in hope too). Graphics are nice and all, but that fairytale image only last about 2 days... and then I'm back to looking for the game play.

Suitepee
05-14-2008, 09:05 AM
Gameplay first,graphics second.
I usually run my graphics for the best performance anyway.

When I used to play WOW,I could perfectly run the game at max setting with all it's fancy bloomers and ground textures, but chose to run it at low because I could play better.

Same will apply for Darkfall. I'll run it at fairly low settings. As long as the graphics are functional I'll happily play.

I'm tempted to say that i prefer a balanced approach...but voted for gameplay, since if that is truly fun i suppose you can have whatever graphics and not mind...

Dandune
05-14-2008, 09:42 AM
Graphics may be interesting and important first few weeks after that people don't really check every detail, they just play the game.

I am sure graphics will be quite decent or good anyway but I will most likely turn off as many features as possible to achieve optimal fps/gameplay.

So personally I'd say gameplay>graphics.

i would play shadowbane with DF features.

I'm glad to see gameplay winning in the pole... it shows how intellegent we are here, lol. There are people who replay the Zelda 64 games and old Final Fantasy games... so I think that a game depends on its gameplay rather than amazing graphics. (And don't some of you play that one dwarf kingdom game or whatever it's called?)

a game i like to mention here is zelda on 64 bec its still good, bec of the gameplay, story and so on. the graphics dosen't count! BTW im zelda fan

To be honest you can have gameplay and good graphics as well, you just have to have decent modellers who actually know what they're doing, if you take a look at Darkfall's latest screenshots ( which I find pretty cool by the way ) the models clearly are quite low polygon but they still have managed to get all the nice facial details in and make cool faces on their characters that actually look reasonably like characters should, I myself am particularly happy that they spent equal time on the males so they don't look like ugly fuckers like in most games.

This gameplay/graphics thing is a farce to me just like the hardware requirements, the graphics are part of the client they don't effect lag, from what I know what effects lag is the amount of data going to and from the server, the only thing you need to worry about graphics wise is how choppy the computer gets from having to load but that can be easily fixed client side by either turning down the settings or making sure the clients as optimized as possible.

Some people here really need to learn the difference between latency and rendering, you don't even necessarily have to dish out on the poly count to have nice looking graphics either.

Altough Gameplay primates, one cant be without the other.
In my opinion an mmo must make u feel u live in the world and want to live in it.
Copy paste landscapes like in SWG makes me go . . . .
Lotro has amazingly good graphix and invites the player to explore the landscapes, where u find it fun to run around, and dont think it as a pfff long distance.
If u have to quest in a simple world, with bad/average graphix, i dont know if i will keep playing , altough the gameplay is good.

the vids / screens ive seen so far, are good, but not that impressing, i hope they can "bloom" it up a bit.

tharon

screw the graphics, the fact is that i will not play this game if there will be server lag.

I'm lazy so I didn't read anything besides the OP's post.

Basically, game-play is obviously 10000% more important. However, I really do enjoy seeing amazing graphics at work. But it can be done relatively simply without the latest technology.

Lineage 2 for example. Have you ever seen Aden? Friggin beautiful. If they got anything right it's their environments.

If I wanted graphics over gameplay, I'd be on the AoC forums right now.
Which is probably where all the people who would had voted for that option are already.

And as i already knew majority here go for gameplay not grafics:).

At first I was going to vote for balance, as graphics DO add to immersion... but then I realized how many games I've played with shitty graphics only to experience the awesome game-play.

I still load up Serious Sam, Half Life 1, and some Korean shooters which all have 'poor graphics' compared to todays standards, all because the game play is addictive.

If the developer can do both its good too :P
AoC is a game where graphics/game play balance seems to have failed on the game-play side.
GTA4 is a game where it succeeded imo.

05-14-2008, 08:39 PM
Both, to me, are equally important in getting me into the game and keeping me there. I also believe that the UI and how it's implemented (minimalistic plz) is very important.

I think DF is aiming for Gameplay more than Graphics, if not equal-balanced approach, and based on these results, it seems like DF is attracting its intended audience :)

As long as the graphics are "clear", high resolution makes things more clear but i certainly dont see the point of all the damn bloom that and map that and everything looks like melted plastic afterall.

Yep..

And re: someone who said you can have both...

You cant. too high graphics in a massive battle, pvp, full loot, no-zone game, will just generate too much lag.

Uldaur
05-29-2008, 10:08 PM
well, gameplay is main priority, but graphics are our eyes in game world. and u know, i wana see some nice environment and wellshaped chars/creatures during playing process.

btw, last demo video reminded me of Lineage 2 with its flat grounds and squareness

and yes, character's ugly movement style, wich we saw in old videos on youtube, hasnt changed much :( at least for human male characters (runing guy with polearm in video, was a human i guess).

hope this moment will be improved

another important moment is how stylish characters are. every race must have its own and unique style of movement, of walking, of runing, of standing, of constitution.

nothing grieves more then the same body constitution for all races.
Vanguard Online is a good example of this kind of failure. just saw vanguard goblin video, and from behind it was looking like ordinary human. same for orcs. thousands of races in game and only difference in body constitution - stature. its awfull.
if some wana make a dorf, its not enough to make char just short in stature.

best example of proper shaping i think are wow and warhammer. every race in these games are unique in their frame and have a proper constitution.
so if you see just a siluet of, lets say an elf, u cant mess it with anyone else.

so in this i think Aventurine can learn from blizzard and mythic.

Darkfall gona be a great game imo and will be sad, if it will fail in one of the most important things, in character shaping.

hope its wont happen :ohno:
