Finally, and as promised: Screenshots featuring grass on the ground, swaying in the wind.
And no, it doesnt hurt the FPS much. Darkfall is still running smooth on a GeForce 1 card.
All hail the mighty Kjetil, Uber Pusher of Polygons! http://www.darkfallonline.com/community/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
You can also see a little preview of the new Darkfall interface.
Comments? Let us hear what you think! http://www.darkfallonline.com/community/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
I like the grass in the first (left) screen shot, but think it looks a bit out of place in the second (right) one. The cows would most likely trample or eat any tall grass. http://www.darkfallonline.com/community/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif But, other than my little bit of nitpicking, the grass looks good.
Anyone up for a little cow-tipping? http://www.darkfallonline.com/community/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/devil.gif
I can
Looks great! Can't really tell if they're swaying, but it's nice to see more of the game and tons of grass working on GF1. Not like I have to worry, I'll probably have a Geforce 6 TI9000 ULTRA PRO XP 2004 when the game is out. It's a bit foggy, can't wait to see how far you can look on a sunny day.

Beautiful! I guess the grass in the cow's pen is not trampled 'cause the cows might not be animeted or have enough AI to move around quite yet?
Anyhow - reeeeealy looking forward to this. Oh, yeah, the interface looks nice and tidy also. I sorta miss the little lizard, but I like that the interface itself is not given the dime-a-dozen "mideaval" look - very nice, all of it!

If it looks this good in Pre-Alpha then it should look really really good when it is in Beta or released.
Just a thought though. Perahps in towns, the grass should be shorter since it will be trampled a lot. Perhaps you guys were only showing us and were going to make it short anyways but this is just an idea just in case you missed that.

About the grass:
This is Darkfall Grass v0.1, so it will look better eventually http://www.darkfallonline.com/community/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
And yes, in towns the grass will be shorter (or eaten by cows) http://www.darkfallonline.com/community/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I like this screens very much too! Looks great and very realistic.
Only UI is not really what I hoped it would be. In my eyes it looks more as science fiction UI but not like afantasy one.
Wooden texture or stone or something else would be fine I think.

I agree with ole.. the interface, preferably should be very clean and hopefully take up as little space as possible.. also the ability to reduce alpha channels on the boxes, so I can render them into near obscurity for vision's sake.
Another question...
If I wanted to remove ALL of the boxes completely, and use strictly mouse and keyboard to run all my commands.. targetting, attacking, spellcasting, etc... would I be able to so? I think that is what a lot of games are missing now, they have many things in them which allow good use fo the interface, but force you to use the interface to dome items, which I would prefer to do via keyboard.

Grass looks great, I think it could look even better if it was shorter by default and a little more uniform. Say about half the length and denser covering, that would look very nice http://www.darkfallonline.com/community/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Nice Job guys. The new interface is much better than before (though I do kind of miss the flashy lizard graphics http://www.darkfallonline.com/community/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif ). I like how it's centered, and there's nothing clogging up the sides...gives me a feel for "peripheral vision."
The real highlight for me is the impending skyline. It's subtle, and makes me want to journey "over there." The screen shots staying true to their nature appear still, and therefore it's hard to imagine the depth of your work. I can only gauge the significance of the cows by Claus's comments about "eaten grass." I suppose it's enough to feed my hunger for now, though I must admit that I'm beyond anxious for more MORE...MORE!
http://www.darkfallonline.com/community/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Thanks for the update.

It has been a while since I have made a post but I guess I've been waiting for a fresh new topic so It doesnt get to repetative but I really like the way the interface is set up and by the looks of it, it is going to give a real time feeling while you are walking around wreaking havoc or slaying evil... My question is this... is the grass that high eveywhere? or just in certain areas?
Kjetil

The grass is that high in areas that have that high grass

In a true 3D game, I would guess that hiding is a matter of placing oneself behind some kind of obstacle, not a skill... i.e., hiding being a matter og player skill, not character skill. Right?

Does hiding = invisibility?
Kjetil
05-10-2002, 06:05 PM
Correct Olemak.
There is no character-skill needed to hide in tall grass (just as in real life), so there won't be a:
*poof* Now I'm gone. *poof* Now I'm not.
That would be an invisibility skill or something along those lines.
But be aware:
There can ofcourse be skills to sense the presence of you in the area. Mahirim and their superior smell comes to mind... http://www.darkfallonline.com/community/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
So remember to brush your teeth before you engage in combat, so your foul breath doesn't give you away. http://www.darkfallonline.com/community/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Great shots guys! I'm truly impressed. Do you think it would be possible to show us some short AVIs or somethin of the actual animation? Also, do you think it would be feasible to incorporate into the GUI/game an option to "tape" or record your screen, such as they allow in Dungeon Seige?

If you are the fastest runner in the game, you put the recording on, run into an enemy base, try to see as much as possible, then when you die, you'll email/send the video to the rest of your clan, and they know how the inside of the town looks like.
Sounds like quite an exploit to me, but how serious of a exploit could be discussed. It would also be very nice to have if you were going on an adventure. You'll start the recorind, then just run around, and if you die. Or get lost or something, you'll have everything on tape, so you could run back easily taking the shortcuts and all.

I think Viranth is right with recording of films, many things would be to easy for attackers and there is no more suprise defender can prepare.
But I loved Screenshot-Feature in DAoC, some days I was only wandering through the world making pictures. http://www.darkfallonline.com/community/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
This idea making GUI able to import skins from other people sounds great to me!

The thing with making films does not strike me as too much of a problem... coordinating an attack based on a film made by a guy sprinting through enemy territory is still pretty hard...
How about automaps, then? Or just sending screenshots from within the enemy compound? I would guess that the ability to make films is way high on the coolness scale, and well below medium on the exploita-meter.
Maybe you should have to use your box of magical imps to make movies, it must be equipped in your right and, and your field of vision is somewhat redusced when making the film... sorta like in discworld... I'm ranting again...

The screen shots look very promising and the interface is also interesting. I like both. The interface is obviously still in the works, so it will probably change. I like the idea of customising / designing your own interface and skins. It would be a nice feature to have.

Will a character moving through tall grass be able to leave a visible trace? When you move through grass in real life you flatten it and leave visible and traceble marks. It would be cool to be able to track game and enemies in such a way. It could even be incorporated in the tracking skill somehow.

Those cows look a little lifeless, kind of made of plastic and in fact they look very much cloned (lol). But I am sure that in the final product we will have brown, black, spotted and even dirty cows. More variation would be nice.
