1) Those have to be the best "Dwarven" models I've seen in ANY game.

Being very interested in dwarfs myself I just had to comment something.
First, landscape. I would like a bit less grass/trees and more pure rock. maybe some rocks scattered around?
Second, beard. I know this a little bit detailed, but what if you made the beard and mustage go together, instead of being separated as in this pic.
And third, the model. We all know dwarfes like beer, so I think they should be a little bit rounder under the belt. (in norwegian:

Ok, I've got questions about the screen shots:
1) Is the Backback going to work similar to UO?
2) What are your goals for the character models as time goes on? Will you add shadows? The arms on the dwarves look a little shinny, perhaps because of the sun, but the armor looks like it's really absorbing a lot of light...for example. Do you hope to have less of a comic-like feel to the characters?
3) Ok, we're looking at a Dwarf with what I can only hope is a Dwarven Axe. Will Dwarves be able to weild, say a Mahirim Polearm, or would that be too award for them to carry around? I guess what I'm asking is, will each weapon be a one size fits all type of style?
4) Can players light up that camp fire? If so, does it over any benefit...like will it actually cook food for the Dwarves?
5) It looks like one of the Dwarves has no helmet and is bald way in the back. Is that the case, or am I looking at something else entirely?
6) There's a big huge tree to the left of one of the Dwarves. Could dwarves climb that tree? If they tried to climb it, would they have to put their weapons down first?
http://www.darkfallonline.com/community/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Once again, those screen shots look great to me. I'm going to have my friends that are long time dwarven players stop by and make some comments later tonight.

Well I have been very very interrested in this game and I cant wait for it to come out. I am a GM for a UO sphere and was lookin into this game to be my swapping point. I love the pictures you have of the world and cant wait to step foot into your world, but when todays pictures came out of the Dwarf I needed to make my first post here.
To me it doesnt look like it fits... almost 2D flat cartoon like. it may be the picture or its not close enough to see the detail but I was hoping it was... well I dont know but it just looks too cartoonish not what I was hoping for. http://www.darkfallonline.com/community/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif
I wsaz ready for you guys to step out with something that totally surpasses all 3d games so far.
again I may be wrong and just wanted to throw my 2 cents in.

I like the anatomy of the dwarf a lot... I believe it is the colour scheme that makes it seem a little flat and cartoonish, as some people point out. Actually, I like the dwarf a whole lot. The eyes seem a bit, well, "hand drawn", though, Not much of the face is isible under that helmet and wonderful, bushy beard... but the eyes look like they were painted on, for some reason.
His upper arms also should be a lot more ripped; sinew and muscle showing clearly. Maybe a few scars and a tattoo, even?
All in al, I think it is the lack of detail that makes the dwarf seem a little out of place right now. The world is so wonderfully detailed and believable - but the dwarf is very neat and clean cut. Add a few more details to the armor, some dents and scratches, some ornaments and studs... maybe an amulet... smal stuff like that, and give them some debth... and add realtime shadows to that... then we're pretty much there.
Again: for the anatomy of the dwarf, I'm compeltely convinced. He looks like a tough and angry feller, just right in terms of anatomical proportions.
Hope beards will be highly customizable, though - they seem to be the most prominent facial feature of them dwarves...

Oh my god! It looks amazing!
But there is a few things I'd like to see you change;
1. All the models in the game should look like they have lived in a rough and tough place for a while, make it a little bit mor dirty and just make it believable that these guys have lived there for a while, and isn't coming from the cleanest and best place in the world.
2. Textures, it's a bit like the 1st point, make it a bit more rough and not so cartoonish. It's like when you have a brand new cd, carry it out in the woods with no protection, it will get scratches and such.. If you get what I mean =)
Except from that these models are REALLY cool, I can't wait to see the Elves! =)
Keep up the good work guys! =)

Guys you have to calm down if you didn't like the screenies because:
1)This is the pre-Alpha! And I'm know for sure this won't be the released model.
2)This is on a low end system with a GF1!! Imagine what are they gonna do when they make it for a really high end system with a GF3+
3)Oh yeah, did I say this is the pre-alpha!!
I agree with everyone on the point that the Dwarves look a little cartoonish. But otherwise it's great! I really have been impressed with this game so far! Can't wait to see the Mahirim. http://www.darkfallonline.com/community/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I agree text isnt real and doesnt flow all these red sentences flying by you were hit for for 15 points. Dont do text just do the health bars and the bigger the hit the more blood or impact it could have to a char. Like he could get tipped back a few degrees or something, just something to tell you you were hit and to look at your health bar.

I'm sure the console is pretty preliminary, but it would be nice to know who is attcking you. That sort of thing can be confusing, sometimes.
Anyway, let's keep this tread on the dwarves and the backpack, not the pre-alpha interface, ok?
The Dwarves look sooo coool. A whole bunch of ripped little bearded runts running around in the forrest, hurling lightning at each other... hehehe, I wanna play darkfall NOW!
The beard is beautiful, by the way!
Hm, is a beard something you "equip" in you inventory, like a helmet, or is it actually a part of your body, like an arm?

Well make an option to put it of. Don't delete it tho http://www.darkfallonline.com/community/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Some people like that.
Btw near a dwarve capital i would suspect a more moonlike landscape hehe. But then again the gnomes need to farm their. I don't expect woods cause dwarves need wood to build things and near a capital it's near impossible a tree would have survived http://www.darkfallonline.com/community/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
The landscape near a dwarve capital should look like the landscape Around for example Saas Fee in Swiss. Mountains and some green places. But thats not that important.

I think so too, it looks really great as an early pre-alpha - and some more details and less of the same shininess at all parts (non-shiny body-parts for example) an it will look realistic, I suppose.

I think I can live with the idea that you can turn off the "personA hits you for 345dmg" http://www.darkfallonline.com/community/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
I still think that in order to create a "real" fantasy world you have to totally get it out of the game.
I played a mmorpg that never showed any numbers when you got hit, and I liked it.
I never said "omfg wtf it killed me" http://www.darkfallonline.com/community/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif Theres no need to, I mean, if i'm a dwarf I don't care about the numbers. The elf just has to die.

Hehe, in order to create a completely believable fantasy world I guess you'd have to get rid of the monitor, the keyboard and that annoying sound from the graphick card cooling fan as well, right?
Just kidding.
FPS's never have damage reports like that, only "j00 got owned by...", which works very well. On the other hand, I really missed the damage report in Morrowind, to the extent that I had to install a plugin to take care of that.
One problem is that lots of action will make the text croll by so fast you won't know whats happening at all, and definately not have time to read hat your buddies are telling you, you know, orders and requests in the midst of battle.
Also, if you also get the damagreport on nearby characters, it really gets cluttered.
Maybe having the damage peprots in a separate window that only opens up when there is action going on? This may be a horrible idea, but it might be better than putting damage reports in the chat window.

First off i want to say, that for Alfa screenies, they look GREAT!!
Second off: The dwarves, taking away the comments from the others that they look too cartoonish and so on, look AMAZING!! Its the first time i get the right feel for a Dwarf! The stubbiness and thickness, give them exactlly the right feel!
Now those models with more rendering and different skins and so on, will be simply awesome!!!

This is just a small thing, but I was curious about it after reading the devs dwarf model comments. It says we will be able to dye clothing and armor - will there be restrictions on the colors, or is everything on the palette fair game.
It would seem a little out of place to see an oh-so-tough dwarf running around in a hot pink breast plate and lime green gauntlets.
I'm sure the devs have already thought about this, just wondering if anyone knew what the decision is.

Some colors may just seem unnatural to the world. To balance this all armor/clothing could start out as the natural color of the material they were made of (leather pants = brown, steel helmet = silver). You would have to find natural dyes to change the colors (e.g. seaweed pulp = dark greenish hue, Death Pig blood = reddish hue).
It's just a small thing in the overall development of the game, but could be a cool little detail.

I wasn't expecting the models to look this good so soon, as other have said there needs to be work added. I'd also like to say to Claus, I'm very impressed that you actually took the time to write up something instead of just making a post of two on the boards. I've been through alot of pre-release months with many other MMORPGs throughout the past 5 years and I'd have to say, you honestly have put me in awe at the lengths that you went with just this one issue. Taking the time to write that up and provide us with that much detail about it gives me and probably all of us, complete confidence that when you(RW) say things like "we care" "we want feedback" "we want players included in decisions", we believe it. Other developers have said those exact same things, but never backed it with as much effort.[/b]

I looked at the initial screenshots of the dwarves and was impressed in general since it is very early. I did not pay attention to their "cartoonish" appearance because I know that will be adjusted.
The one thing I did notice that seems very obtrusive is that dark, transparent window. I am sure that will be looked into and corrected.
Nice so far.

07-13-2002, 03:54 AM
First off, i have to say, i was TOTALLY IMPRESSED by the screenshots!!!!!! That's one of the first things got me REALLY excited about this game! I agree with the other people who have already said that is the best dwarven character design that i have ever seen! Pretty much all the other dwarven character designs i have seen in games or illustrations looked just like short fat midgets with a layer of muscle on top of their FAT arms and legs. DF dwarves look like an actual race of their own, not a bunch of fat midgets (and i mean no offense by that, but fat midgets should be in the HUMAN category!http://www.darkfallonline.com/community/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif.
As far as the colors go, let people die their characters the way they want! I don't understand why some people always want to force everyone else to play the game in the exact same way that they want to :/ That ends up being a very BORING online game if you don't allow the players to develop their own natural diversity. The player will develop their own identity, you CANNOT stop that no matter what you do, so it is better to run with it and encourage it than it is to try to inhibit it! It is the unique player identities that make these games worth playing.

WanderingNomad

I agree that individuality plays a large part in any online game, Alistair, and that people should be able to dye their equipment any color that can be found in the DarkFall world. If the world contains natural elements (flowers, animal parts, ground stones, etc...) that allow pink, green, blue dyes, I'm all for it. It detracts from the immersiveness of the game if the colored equipment appears out of nowhere, with no natural source in the world.
