Im trying to get a grip how much battle we will see on the DF seas.
Alot of loot and resourses will be transported, and many wants to have a piece.
So how many clans is there that will have alot if "activity" on the seas.
We know hundreds of them will fight on land.

Well, I know our clan will definitely be there.....probably 50-70+ members at launch give or take...Nothin extraordinary clan size-wise I agree, but enough to make things interesting for Sea travellers.
Plus you got the Shipwrecked sheepshaggers, not positive how many are in their clan, plus maybe a handful of other "Pirate" clans....RPers and DoOdz alike.
If I were to ponder a guess at the total number of Sea-based "Pirate" clans slated for DF, I'd say less than 10.....but more than 5.
If we are talking about clans that have "Naval" forces, the number will go up dramatically.

lso the number of battle your going have depends on how many men it takes to man a ship as the guy above saying he will have 60-70 member well if a ship takes 15ppl to man then they will only have 4 ships out their but if some ship can be manned with say as few as 5 people then you likely to see mid size guilds with 10+ ships out their so even having only say 7 sea based guild you could see up to 70+ ships in the water not count any city near on next water should/would want to have some form of navy

We need more clans on the sea.
The oceans are huge on the Agon map. Would be a waste of space to not use it, or worse....declaring oneself "master of the seas" without a fight.
I intend to make life hard on all pirates, just to try to get them some "competition":ohno:
Maybe I wont have the Navy to win agenst a 100% pirate clan...but i will damn try:D

I can dig that Daarco....
I'm sure we'll be trading cannonfire someday :D
But I think alot of clans will have a naval component, especially the larger ones.

My only concern is that there will be more pirates that merchants traveling the seas.

Piracy does naught but abet the Hand of Chaos. You are all barnacles on Malaut's galley and nothing more!
Know that the Church's war on corruption is not limited to the cesspools of Morak and Nagast, and I shall do my utmost to ensure any attempt of landworthiness on your behalf results in nothing but blackened embers on your shores.

Very well Padre......
And let me extend to you the same courtesy. Should we find any of you and your overzealous, delusional, tight-arsed minions on the high seas, we'll make it a point to show you the true depth of the oceans.
Bargain struck.

My only concern is that there will be more pirates that merchants traveling the seas.
This scenario could be a possibility and we are quite equipped to deal with it.
Who says we'll only target landlubbers who venture out to sea?
We can always raid other seagoing clans/players...merchants aren't the only ones with valuables and exactly how many ships do you think we'll actually purchase? We'll always be looking for vessels to capture regardless of who may be sailing them or what their cargo might be.
There will also be coastal towns/cities that will be more than willing to cough up provisions, currency, etc. for us to stop firing at them. We can blockade their harbors and just be all around nuisances.
Anyone who thinks we'll be mindlessly sailing hoping for random victims is sadly mistaken. That wouldn't be much fun, not when there are so many alternatives available to us.
We will obvoiusly have to come into port at some point and any good crew will take full advantage of shore leave to cause as much disruption in landlubber towns as possible.
We will only be limited by game mechanics and racial alignments. On the sea though, we can go anywhere with little to no consequence. Those who spend their time 100% landlocked can't exactly do this due to racial alignments.

Barbarossa!
You are exacly what the sea conlict need in DF, you must truly be the evil nasty pirate all players will talk shit about, but non dare to meet you (or United pirates).
As i have said before, you will need something to fight agenst:D
Now im sure naval combat/gameplay will be the most fun part of DF.

The only pirate clan that I've been fortunate enough to fight with and against were the Shipwrecked Pirates. I'm sure there are others out there now, such as these U.P.s

honestly ID expect there will be a lot to start with like in more games and slowly the weak clans will die (weak will die fast) and the med to large ones will take control. There simply is no way to have a huge Merc and Pirate Pop in a game like this.

Bah humbug.
I bet you theres plenty of Mercs and TONS of pirates.

TONS of pirates.
There won't be once we send `em to Davey Jones, arrrr!
I hope there are other pirate clans other than the known clans such as The Shipwrecked Pirates and ourselves. That's an awful big ocean for just two pirate crews.
I imagine we'll all be staking out territories and fiercely guarding them, especially if it's a frequented landlubber route. I imagine there will be plenty of squabbles over whose is what and what is whose. Then let the carnage commence.
I'm looking forward to it.

After watching Departed I downloaded the song in it I liked by Dropkick Murphys, I'm shipping off to Boston. That music makes me want to be a pirate in DF actually now... I listen to music alot when I play, nothing feels better than a killing spree with a kickass soundtrack to go with it.

The idea of been a Pirate and the PvP aspects is what caught my intrest in this game. I was going to start playing with a couple of friends, but my the sounds of some of these clans well be quite low on numbers to start a Pirate clan immediatly. But been a Pirate is my number 1 aim in this game.

I think you should wonder about your grammer and spelling before pirate clans.
i.e. name of thread: how many pirate clans is there?
use are instead of is...

I'm sure pirates are worried about grammer. I have a feeling they're more worried about scurvy.

Well i know i'll hopefully be starting a clan with some of my friends that will be based out in the ocean on an island, so if you get too close to us, i'm sure you'll find some trouble. :)

IMO there will be FAR too many Pirate clans to start but then the number will go down once the novelty wares off.

I can't wait for the day all the pirates turn into respectable merchants. Kind of like how hippies turned into doctors and lawyers.

I dunno, I imagine that even pirates will be merchants... And pirates will end up fighting other pirates as well ;)
Sure your ship will be rigged with cannons, but after looting a ship dry, you'll probably find a city to dock in, sell your wares, and divvy up the shinies :P
I imagine pirates as being more like hard-core merchants... I mean if you want to corner a market, *that's* how you do it. You trade between a certain route between two cities, and kill any other merchant that dare encroach on your territory ;P
Of course a lot of guilds will frown upon the way you do business, but there will always be those clans that don't care from whence the goods came, as long as you give 'em a good deal on your stolen wares, hehe.

I imagine EVERY guild, no matter what their name is ( Pirates of non merchanting pirates, or Mercenaries of the WE DON'T CRAFT leage) will engange in some sort of trade.

The guild may not be down for just pirating, but they'll have to pry the cannon out of my cold dead hands before I get off my pretty ship.
