You talk to any UO player, and they can probably tell you a dozen or more hilarious stories around their time in the game.

These guys in the interview make the interesting point that modern MMOs offer to much constraint. UO did not have these limits (at least early on).

Still to this day a remarkable game. He mentions it was the wild west for a time. It really was. There were so many possibilities every time you logged in.

He is right though, that no one likes to be a victim. You just had to play with the knowledge that you could lose your equipment or hard earned items. I always ran out with poor quality items and maybe a high quality sword. Always banked frequently.

This was a fun vid to watch. :D Anyone who doesn't understand why UO graybeards sing its praises should watch this to get some insight.

edit: UO was a simulation, while later MMOs are just games... Sounds about right.

This, this, and more this.

My favorite paraphrased stuff:

How UO shaped the MMO World
"No one really wanted to make a virtual world. They wanted to make a grind. What we had in UO was a simulation. EQ was more directed, level based, EXP based."

"The stories [from other games] are fewer, because the systems are so much more constrained. And that's what UO taught so many MMO designers. Where, in their own minds, they should constrain their systems to minimize some of the interesting things that actually cause damage."

The Necessary Change
"It was not economically viable, because the experience was not fun. People would come in and go out pretty quick, because they were sheep to the wolves."

Today's MMO Industry
"You could touch the stove in UO, where in most current games you can't."

I'm one of the devs on MortalOnline. We are clearly influenced by UO to the point where we are cloning some of the back-in-the-days-UO rules.
EVERYTHING these guys are saying I can relate to, the problems they have with having a sandbox with as little rules as possible, we are having the exact same issue even thou we have learned a lot from their experiences.
The "real-rage" the amounts of bugs that come with a massive game like UO.

Ahh the good old days of UO.

My first character in UO was a miner/smith. As many remember a lot gold wasn't the easiest thing to achieve for new characters back in the day but I wanted a house soo badly, so I mined my ass off for weeks stockpiling ingots and working my mining skill. This of course was made more difficult by constant bandits that loved to prey on defenseless miners, I probably lost a lot more ingots then I kept lol.

Anyway once I finally had enough ingots to sell to purchase a small stone workshop I spammed my wares at Minoc bank. I quickly had a buyer for all my ingots, I was about to burst with glee! I was going to get a house!

The other person started the transaction by placing the appropriate checks in the trade window. Being a total nub and pretty new to the whole online gaming scene I ignorantly assumed that people were for the most honest. I completed the trade and my trade partner quickly departed. When I tallied my spoils I noticed I was WAY short! The guy (later learned of the tactic of course) had swapped all but the top check for 5K checks shorting me hundreds of thousands (about 80%). It was nearly the end of UO for me, I was soo angry and discouraged at that point that I nearly ragequit (im sure I cursed my monitor a fair bit).

Ahh but looking back I still have to laugh at myself for being such a total noob.

My computer literate uncle gave me UO in 1997 when I was 13. I was so lost. At first I didn't realize you started in different cities. I just made a thief and would head towards the bank or wherever people were gathered. After returning to my corpse, I started cussing out the guy I stole from who called the guards, mispelling everything because I had cuss filter enabled and the guy was like what are you, 13? He ended up helping me out, showing me where the provisioner was in east brit, and how to sell items. Told me to make a lumberjack bowyer for a day and stockpile gold. He gave me a copy of easymacro via icq, and showed me how to make a macro herding a dog while snooping as we afk macroed in east britain.

Eventually I made a mage and befriended some other awesome people who showed me t2a when it came out, marked me some runes to wyvern spawns north of papua, and showed me how to trap them and blade spirit them for huge money at the time. Also terathan fort collecting magic weapons and they showed me an exploit with blade spirits on a tile below you raising magic resist.

I played siege perilous when it came out, after the first week so many people had macroed despite their hardcore enforcement, they did a complete wipe and implemented a cap on gains per day. I eventually had a 7x axer with hiding and was selling gold on ebay constantly which I got from buying faction reagents in skara brae.

Eventually i made characters on all servers, ran them to rare spawns, and before school I'd catch asian servers rebooting and had gold on most servers, which was all worth money on ebay, less popular servers were worth less but it was all worth $25-$70 per 100k gold. A single rock which spawned in bucs den was worth $100-150k for example. Fruit baskets spawned in nujelm and yew, buckets of water spawned in the hedge maze but you needed to have an empty pitcher to empty their water out, then you could pick them up, similar for barrels with lids.

They were constantly releasing new shards, and my friends and I would all get on from the start to be the first to get high end magic scrolls and pool our resources/macro/development help. I found an awesome way to make money in Jhelom killing nobles, then figured out with entice skill you could lure them while you were waiting for your escorting cooldown to reset, you could entice them out of guard zone, then kill them, collect the gold, clothes, shoes, sword, and sell it to the npcs, making many thousands of gold. I remember when an npc would spawn with a cool pair of sandals you'd bank all your stuff spend the next 30 minutes poisoning, resurrecting after guard whack, poisoning, etc until they died.

I remember thiefs were brutal. I had a blessed item I was selling and the guy asked me to put it in a bag because he wanted to see it on a different background than the trade window, then he stole it out of the trade window. Fell for a number of tricks. Pking with tinkering was epic. Best fucking game, so much cool shit to do.

I don't think any mmo will ever beat UO (and if it happens, I would give my right testicle to be able to play it). I know there are a couple millions of wow players that would say otherwise, but I'm sure if they would have started their MMO career playing UO instead, they would have the same opinion than mine. I personally don't know anybody who have played UO seriously who don't put this game #1 in their MMO list.

I remember in a 2v2 tourney, i couldnt find a partner in time so i just grabbed my girlfriend and said "just push these 2 buttons when i say so".

After about 9 rounds or so, "yes she didnt die" we ended in the final vs Chopper X and Jabu. 2 of the best UO t2a pvpers to play the game. We shit on them in about 60 seconds, and i think its uploaded on uomovies.com. They raged logged.

Just one of the many many tournaments i claimed victory, but easily the funniest.

UO was a game all about player skill. Hell, one of the original developers, in the video linked, describes the, "That guy's hacking phenomenon!" that comes from having a game so heavily influenced by player skills.

He explained it pretty simply as everyone being on a bell curve, except the players on the far right are so far advanced from the middle dwellers that it looks like they're cheating, when, in fact, they're just really good. Hence the, "That guy was hacking!" When in truth, he really wasn't.

It's Siege Force. He's some strange shut in. Fictional stories are fictional.

I tuned in, and you know what? You're right.

The difference is incredible. There's no popping around (or very little) and everything seems to run very smoothly.

Now, sadly, the animations make Darkfall animations look good. :(

The overall flow of combat still seems awkward. It's not lag per say, but more how the game is designed? I can't quite put my finger on it.

You say it's fun though, huh? What's the population like? Be honest.

GirlyMan

Actually UO isn't really player skill at all. I believe someone getting his GF to fill in and winning a tournament, because in UO you rely solely on the RNG to win or lose battles, or your ping and Assist programs or all of the above.

Also MO makes Darkfall look like a cartoon.

if you want to try it out you should wait until awekaning comes out (next big patch, comes within next 3 weeks). Besides important gameplay stuff like local auction houses ( trade NPC) these last hickups you explained should be fixed
-64bit support
-new prediction system ( what causes the models to lag abit sometimes atm)

ontop of that out of my head

-dyeable armor
-trade broker
-new AI
-new GUI

and so on, if you still follow the DF 2.0 development all these feature should sound familiar. it will also get new player models, i don't know if it includes animation but you are right they are shit. However the mechanics behind the game hooked me, that mounts have a individual character alone is crazy and no despawn shit like in DF.

I'am as much surprised as you are...when i checked las time in dec. it was still shit and unplayable

BTW, you act like UO or any other tab target game is hard. Im handicapped on Darkfall due to my ping, not skill. On a tab targeting game like UO, Skill beats Ping everytime. Players like Spanky who had 5 ping spammed mini heals to try and survive, while 300pingers like me casted disrupts then heals to live. And UO wasnt even hard, the sad thing is players who played it for 10 years were still fucking bad because again, they were ping keyboard mashing junkies instead of taking a breath and casting spells correctly.

And group fights were just 2,1,drop and whoever got their bow shots off, or were decent at healing won. Again, not hard.

Really? what big league am i missing for t2a pvp? Besides 97-99 the only servers worth anything were Divinity, Trepidus, IPY, Metropolis and Metro remakes.

I won tourneys on all of them besides ipy. Name one server worth a damn of playing scrub.

And Chopper X would easily be in the top 5 of all time UO players across any era. The only 2 people id put ahead of him would be Roach (obviously) and HMU. Both i have also beaten, and if you havent heard of them names you're a nobody.

-yes, mages need high DEX and high INT. DEX to run away and keep distance, INT for casting. however spell gfx are shit

-you have 3 slots usually one character can specialize in one crafting, yes you can't do everything on you own

-growing, players online everytime, atleast in the city where iam, i guess some remote places are empty
