Background

Since the day my vendor in Elish (http://dfvendors.com/28/) was established, halfway into 2010 (http://forums.darkfallonline.com/showthread.php?t=251395), I've been keeping track of all sales on and off the vendor. Now, after approximately 1.5 years, the total revenue is starting to close in on the fabled 100 million mark, and I figured I'd celebrate the occasion by throwing a lottery for my customers.


Tickets

Lottery tickets will be granted, under the following conditions, to any person who buys items from me or my vendor:

You will get one ticket for each full 10k's worth of items you buy (if you buy for 8k one day and then 16k the next week, the amounts are added and you're eligible for 2 tickets after the second purchase).

Tickets will not be issued until the total revenue passes 90 million (see below for current total). Any purchase (or part thereof) that exceeds the 100 million mark will be ignored. This means a theoretical maximum of 1000 tickets can be handed out, although it's highly unlikely that the actual number of tickets will be anywhere near that.

One person, regardless of the number of characters she has, can hold a maximum of 100 tickets for this lottery (corresponding to 1 million or more of purchases).

The buyer has to post the details of the purchase (items, quantities, total amount of gold, rough time of purchase and his ingame name) in this thread as soon as he's reasonably able to (no "tactical" delays of information will be allowed).

The purchase details must be verified and confirmed by myself; only tickets explicitly issued by me in this thread are valid (see second post for a list).

Any attempt at cheating or otherwise getting an unfair advantage (e.g. posting fraudulent purchase info, letting others get tickets for your purchases, etc.), will result in all your and your accomplices' tickets being revoked. Play fair!



Prizes

The first three prizes will be a refund of some or all of the gold that was used for purchasing items, and will be based on the number of tickets you have. E.g. if you have 23 tickets and win the first prize, you'll get 230k pure gold back (you still have the items you originally bought with the gold, of course, so if you look at it from that angle you can think of the free items as your prize instead).

The other prizes will be predefined amounts of gold or enchanting mats. For the full prize list (which may be modified), see the second post of this thread.

Important note: The prizes will be drawn with the presumably least-valuable (i.e. highest-numered) prize going first and, perhaps more importantly, each person can only win one prize. This means that there's possibly a trade-off to be made: while a higher amount of tickets increases your chances of winning something, it also increases your chances of winning early (and thus, no 1st prize for you). Once you've won a prize, you're ineligible for more prizes; declining the prize you just won won't change that. If you feel that the lottery will be more exciting having fewer tickets, you obviously aren't required to post all of your purchases here. You can also hand in tickets you've already been granted, as long as you do it before the drawing starts.


Time Frame

As I write this post, the current total revenue is at 89,580k - so I'll start issuing tickets after another 420k's worth of sales. As a reference point, I've sold for 1454k so far this week, and I sold for 2103k last week. So if the current pace keeps up, the tickets could start flowing in 1-3 days. Similarly, I expect the actual drawing to take place in like 6-11 weeks' time from now.


Drawing

When the ticket-issuing phase is over, I'll try to find a suitable time and possibly location, most likely a chaos city, where the conclusion of the lottery will take place. Participants will not be required to be present, or even online, but are encouraged to (as it will make handing out the prizes a lot easier). Tickets will be numbered from 0001 to (theoretically) 1000. The digits will be rolled and announced one by one, from least to most significant.

In order for the process to be transparent and trustworthy, I'm thinking of inviting up to 9 willing leaders of large guilds/alliances or otherwise trustworthy or well-known people into a party, and then do the rolling using ingame commands (i.e. "/roll_party d10"). This should ensure there's enough witnesses and that the result can't be manipulated. Post in this thread if you feel trustworthy and would like being in this witness party/committee.

(I will also consider better alternatives than the procedure described above, if they show up.)

If there's any loopholes or unclarity, disputes will be settled by me, so that the intention and spirit of this event is preserved. I'm voluntarily giving out freebies here, so I reserve the right to act as both jury, judge and executioner. ;)

It's all well explained on how the winner(s) will be picked. If you by 400k you have many tickets and thus many chances to win but also more likely to get a lower end prize.

The relatively "deadness" of the server at the moment, or more particularly, the last couple months ;
The fact that he netted 1.5m this week and 2.1 mil last week;
The amount of time the vendor has been in existence;
The way Miia plays the game;

I would estimate hes sitting on 35-45 million in gold.
If you told me to guess lower; 20m-30m or higher 55m-70m

Each person is assigned a number, from 1 - 27.

100 million revenue (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revenue) (also known as turnover), not profit. I'd say profit is roughly 25% of revenue on average, but varies a lot from item to item and deal to deal. What's your profit margin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Profit_margin)?

Your feelings have always been odd, but what are you insinuating here? Are you saying I'm not trustworthy or is this just your way of asking to be in the party when I roll? ;)

Besides, having lots of tickets isn't necessarily optimal. The number of people participating and the number of total tickets issued (which reasonably could end up anywhere from 30 to a couple of hundred) will greatly affect the optimal solution (now, there's a decent math problem for you to solve, Orolt :p).

It's made this way, so some guild can't game it by buying lots of stuff and expect to get a full refund. It's a lottery for all my customers, not just the already ultra-rich.

The vendor was linked in the OP. I've never announced what I sell anywhere else than on DFVendors (Falesh derserves yet another ty for that site!), so watching trade forums or ingame trade channels wouldn't have helped you.

Your estimates are (unfortunately) way off, and your "d27 idea" is unnecessarily complex (reassigning player numbers all the time and requiring people to join my guild?) and wouldn't work for reasons already pointed out. ;)

I may not have explained this well enough in the OP, but Orolt got the gist of it. I figured I'd roll and announce one digit at a time in order to keep the suspense a bit longer (there's a reason they do it like that on TV). ;)

Let's say we end up with 180 tickets. I'd roll a d10 twice (to get the 1's and the 10's), then a d2 (to get the 100's). If the number is too high, the entire roll would have to be redone so that certain ticket numbers aren't favoured. The same would happen if the rolled number belongs to a player who's already out (after winning a prize).

And therein lies the weakness of this system. Consider what would happen if there was 101 tickets and the first winner held most of them. We'd never stop rolling.

As I said in the OP, I'm open to better solutions (after all things are taken into account).

Thought as much, considering your insane prices(on some stuff) I would assume your profit would be higher than 25%, maybe around 40%.

Mine is like 50-100% profit, but then again, im known to not be really desperate in my trades so to speak.

I wait for desperate sellers to buy up bulk very cheap but to be fair I dont need to hold as high prices like some of yours in return.

On your behalf, you have alot more diversity in what you can offer to sell and you provide more of a service. I dont have the energy for that, I rather secure my bulk buys with a guaranteed sale in advance.

Heh, Mad Baddie just ran by my house and thought the lottery had already started and came to make a decent-sized purchase. According to the rules in the OP I won't grant tickets until the revenue passes 90 mill, but there's no clear rule about what happens to the actual purchase that breaks the boundary.

So, in my first act of being the jury, judge, etc. I told him that he could have the full amount of the purchase count towards tickets. The tickets would, after all, be granted after 90 mill, and I feel it would be too harsh to split the purchase in two and only give tickets for part of it.

This means that the first phase of the lottery is now live, and that Mad Baddie was the first to receive tickets. He's apparently banned from the forums (lol), but as I was there (in character) to verify the purchase I'll post it for him.

Mad Baddie bought 50 Veilron Ingots, 28 Neithal Ingots, 100 Q4 Bile, 100 Q4 Darktaint, 2 Elish Runestones and a Nexus Exit at ~4 AM today, 169.7k total.

I remember that purchase, but Durri's right, I'm afraid. No matter at what point I'd start the lottery, someone would've gotten the short end of the stick, and you (and lots of others, I may add) were some days early.

As I've explained above, though, getting the most number of tickets may not always be the most favourable situation for this particular lottery. And it will run for quite a few weeks yet, so there's plenty of chances to get more. Not sure if that's any consolation, but... :/

Second stats update: Two weeks after the ticket phase started, total revenue is 94,604k, which means we're almost half way (46%) in this phase. If the pace keeps up this way, the lottery will end 3 weeks, perhaps 4, from now.

Of ~4.7 mill worth of purchases, almost 60% (~2.7 mill) have been published in this thread, a significant increase in participation compared to the first week (the stats of which are quoted above). :)

If you look at the vendor sales alone, they're about average (~1 mill/week) both weeks, but I've done a lot of direct trades while logged in. I'm still not sure if the lottery itself has a real effect or not, tbh.

I don't believe I'm generous. I believe I'm providing a valuable service for the server. I try to keep everything in one place, and the only way to do that is to change prices according to supply and demand.

When stocks run low or things become harder to get, I increase prices to try to keep everything in stock - which means the high-demand stuff will be expensive. If I sold high-demand items at your "fair" prices, they'd be sold out in no time, instead of being there for the ones who need them, when they need them.

When stocks increase, I dump prices, even below what I bought them for (but I'm getting better at balancing WTB/WTS lists now now so that's not needed too often any more). If I sell low-demand items too high, they'd just keep piling up which would be no point for a merchant. I don't hoard the way you do.

I play for enjoyment of the superb market simulator DF is, not because I need moar gold! I don't need more gold and it's been that way for a long time now. That you measure everything in gold and nothing according to the value you create for the server speaks volumes of your own mindset.

What does "triple profit" mean? You think I bought them for 600g each? Guess this just highlights how little you read of the posts you reply to and how you judge everyone else's actions by your own greedy mindset. (WWXD?)

Undoubtedly, you can find many items you'd consider overpriced, but as I said earlier I buy them for way more than you do. Take these Rakta as an example. I bought them yesterday for 1.15k each, which was my WTB price at the time (the seller has posted in this thread, so I'm sure he can confirm if he doesn't mind getting "exposed" for pushing 'demon' blood :p).


After having bought 100 Rakta, I changed the WTB price to 1k and the qty to 10, as I now have a stack that'll probably last for a good while (blood is one of the least useful ench. mats, as I'm sure you're aware) - as I don't want to buy more unless they're cheap (i.e. 1k, still 400g over your price).

If they sell at 1.8k, I'll have earned 650g each, which means the profit margin (profit as percentage of revenue, which you asked about earlier) is 650g/1800g = 36.1%. You can also look at it from the other side - how many % did I add to the WTB price? 1800g is 56.5% higher than 1150g.

I generally try to keep the profit margin between 30% and 40%, low end of the range for easy-to-sell items, high end of the range for hard-to-sell items. Runestones, Portal Shards and lots of other non-enchanting mats are more often in the range of 20-25%, and particularly low are rare ores (while you make 100%, selling off mines at zero buy-cost).

If the Rakta doesn't sell for a while, I'll probably reduce prices to 1.7k, 1.6k, and beyond (last time I had a lot, they went to 1.2k before selling), which would obviously reduce profit percentages by a lot. I need this headroom to be able to adapt as market prices fluctuate.
