This event already occurred. I am sharing it here, because it is a very easy event for any clan to put on for their own members. It takes a little bit of prep time on the organizers part (1-3 hours), but the event scales to size and location, and everyone who participated had a ton of fun. I'd say you need a minimum of 9 players, and there's no upward limit (the more, the better) after that.

With the creative use of a few mechanics and some rules, this is really fun.
Also, more sand for the box.

Ménage à trois: Capture the Flag

Spawl Yardarm and myself collaborated to bring you all a PvP mini-game for Darkfall. As you can probably guess by the name, this will be a three way game of capture the flag restricted to a confined space. Capture the flag, on its own, is pretty vanilla. We spiced it up in two different ways. First, we added a third team. The close proximity means everyone can see one another, this means teams can gang up, or go behind each other's backs, etc. Second, we added the resource deposits and a capturable asset (the ship), which gives the teams something else to compete for in the early part of the game.

When we hosted this event, we used the island chain north of Talpec on Yssam. Below you'll find an image of the location we used for the event, as well as the layout for each team. In depth rules and procedure can be found after the image: Ménage à trois: Capture the Flag original location (http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d196/BlueOreo7/CTFbasic.png).

This event can be hosted anywhere though.

How You Play

Each team is given a clan strongbox and allowed to place it anywhere on the ground level of their island. In their strongbox, they keep the 'flag,' which is a unique hat or helm. In order to capture another team's flag, you must travel to their strongbox, steal their flag, and immediately equip it, before you make the journey home. This marks you as a flag carrier. The team that collects all three flags in their strongbox is the winner.

Kill/death rules are the same as team duels. If an enemy revives you, then you are considered 'ganked,' and must return and touch your home strongbox before you can rejoin the battle. If you are decapitated, die in the water, or bleed out, then your team is short a man until you swim back from Talpec. Enemy teams must use good faith in order to stop bleed outs, reviving enemy players when they can.

Every team will start off with the same amount of consumables, weapons, armor, and black powder. The resource deposits marked on the map will be personal strongboxes full of higher quality equipment and additional consumables. In order to break open these resources, the players must take control of the ship in the middle and use the cannons to break open the strongboxes.

In Depth Rules

Setup
Divide into three teams. Each team will be given a clan strongbox and will randomly draw for which island they will call home. Teams can place their strongboxes anywhere on their home island, as long as its on the ground level. Once the strongboxes are placed, the referee delivers each team's 'flag.' Each 'flag' will be a unique helm or party hat. This flag must be kept in the strongbox.

Requirements
- 3 clan strongboxes
- 3 personal strongboxes
- 1 ship
- 3 unique helms that will act as flags
- bloodcraft, shadecraft, and regular armor for each team

Identifying Different Teams
We differentiated the team flags by providing a separate and remarkable hat for each flag (princess hat, santa hat, and minotaur king helm were used). Also, each team either had to wear bloodcraft, shadecraft, or nothing at all, and each team also had a unique shield to use.

Returning Flags
To return a flag, you kill the flag carrier, revive him, and crouch next to him. Once he is revived, he will crouch and open a trade with you, giving you the flag immediately. You now must equip the flag, return to your base, and deposit it in your clan strongbox.

Kill / Death
All the same rules apply here as they do in friendly team duels. If you are revived by an enemy, this counts as a gank. In order to re-enter the fray, you must return to your home strongbox and touch it. If you are killed in the water, or you are decapitated, then your team is down a man until you return from Talpec (it's a short swim). Obviously, there's no looting.

Win Condition
The objective of the game is to have all three flags in your home strongbox. Once a team achieves this, the game is over.

Wildcard: The Resource Deposits
The wildcard in this game is the ship in the middle and the resource deposits. Everyone will start with a set amount of consumables, the same weapons and armor, and some black powder. The resource deposits will be personal strongboxes. In order to gain access to them, a team will need to board the ship in the center, maneuver the boat, and blow open a resource deposit. Resource deposits will have better equipment and additional consumables.

Equipment, Black Powder
In order to make the resource depots valuable, we provided low quality gear bags for everyone (bone, plate, scale, R50 weapons). The resource depots were stocked with full plate and keened R60 weapons.

It only takes a few cannon shots to open a strongbox. So, we gave each team member 2 black powder, meaning they had to either trade or work together to actually open a strongbox.

Things We Learned From Hosting Ours

Referees, Global Announcements
Originally I was going to be the only referee. You could get away with it, but you really need 3 to make it run smoothly. One referee assigned to each team helps a lot. First, it means that each team has someone to revive them in the chance of being totally killed or being unable to revive their bleeding out players. The idea is to keep everyone engaged in the game, so letting players bleed out is a bad thing. Second, each referee should have a global bind in Ventrilo so that they can announce when flags are stolen. While flags can still be ninja'd, this further adds to the conflict.

Gear Bags
The effort we put into creating gear bags for everyone was not worth it. You can simply ask your members to wear mediocre quality gear bags and then provide high quality equipment in the resource depots. However, the one thing you do need is enough pieces of bloodcraft and shadecraft so that you can differentiate the teams.

Human Nature
Your members will cheat! They will literally bend the rules to the point of breaking in order to win a game, even against their own clan mates. If they see that killing someone in water means they'll be out of the fight longer, then they'll use it to their advantage.

Rule Amendment for Water Scenarios
We ran into a big problem with the water. Instead of using good faith (like they're supposed to), we found the teams intentionally trying to decap their enemies in the water. This just comes from the competitive nature of Darkfall, and instead of asking players to be more honorable, we added a rule change.

When a player touches the water, you can no longer attack them. They must swim back to their home island before rejoining combat. This only really applies to water setups for this event.

The strength of our location was that the land bridges allowed teams to see each other coming as well as funnel them into zones of conflict. The downside was the decaps. If I were hosting it again, I would definitely do it on land.

Layout, North/East/South/West and Begone
We initially had big fears that certain islands would be imbalanced by the use of bunny hopping and particularly begone. However, when we did this event, we played 3 games and each island (Southwest, North, and Southeast), each won a game, which I think is a good result and shows the natural balance that arises from having to travel to and from enemy islands.

+1 for this.

Let us know if you want to put this on and let me know if I can help.

I'd love to hear how other people run this thing.

There's lots of wiggle room, and there's lots of room to change it.

This sounds awesome!

One thing i might change if i brought this to our alliance was that if you get rezzed by an enemy (ganked) or fall/jump in the water, and must return to your base, you can't stat up on the way until you get back to your strongbox.

Im gonna bring this up and try to get this going for tofts, nice idea guys :D

I've had sigs/in-line images turned off for so long that I forgot you could do that on this forum. Original post updated with map image.

I'll publish more events soon, hoping to hear from anyone who hosts this.
