I feel like sharing....
I've been taking a couple of classes at a local darkroom place. Some of this is homework and some is just stuff I've randomly taken in the past 3 months.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/mightyacorn/ if you feel like looking at any of the other stuff.

Ditto!

I have been drooling over the D80 but the better half is not going to budge.

I may have to settle for a D40 (or a D50 since they are an older model that will likely go on clearance pricing)

If worse comes to worse The Rebel XT kits are going for cheap right now and they are pretty nice to.

I bought a Nikon D50 this past summer, and love it. It came with two lenses, and I bought a 80-300mm/ macro zoom to top it off. You can set it for the auto modes ( 7) or fully manual with manual lenses. For sports activity, I use the fully auto Sports mode ( auto focus,f-stop, lens aperture) and other than that its manual . I bought a 2gig memory card ( good for 1000 exposures) and a decent camera bag. I was a freelance photographer for a number of years, and finally splurged this year and got this. Kinda pricey, but no regrets. I'll post some stuff at a later date. :D

I'm using a rebel xt. Sorry boys (and girls who swing that way) the girl is underage. Her mom drives her into Denver to model for our classes....

I love the xt, but I'd rather at least have the xti.... self cleaning sensor. Cleaning your sensor is scary!

Bensidhe, how much did you charge? I'm just getting started at portrait photography to help make ends meet around here and I just don't know what to charge! I'd kill to have a 300mm lens. My highest is 105mm, but I'm in love with 18mm... someday I hope to have a fisheye lens. Did you shoot in RAW or JPG? I have a 4gb card and can't get 1000 pics shooting in raw.

MightyAcorn, back in the day I charged $125 for weddings, as my customers just wanted the film for processing later . If I had to go through the process of getting the film processed and pictures printed the price went up to $250 as I had to pay for that up front and its all about making some coin .
My 1st 35mm was a Yashica FRII SLR , I had a lens doubler( 2x) a number of lens filters, and a motor drive for doing sports activities.I had a fisheye lens and a 52mm. I didn't get around very well without a car, so...it fell by the wayside and I got a job that paid better and more consistently . I had a dedicated flash as well. I recommend getting one for the digital SLRs as well as the ones most come with are only good for close up shots .
The D50 has a native setting of 2fps , and up to 4fps for high speed subjects . Shutter speed maxed out is 4000 !
I use the small RAW .jpg setting ( small * size of 2048x1350? ) to get decent exposures. I went to a regular .jpg setting and was getting close to 1200 exposures with the 2 gig card . The small RAW. jpeg setting works for me as I get very good quality shots that I can blow up to 8x10 with no grain. I got the Nikon for the quality of the product, their reputation for customer service and I have a 3 year extended warranty on it . Its been 4x4ing with me, and all over the East Kootenay's . I carry a Kodak C730 with me daily because of the kind of photo opportunities that present themselves almost every day . Thats the kind of town I live in . The wildlife and scenery are as much a part of the town as anything.

Leprechaun, are you all moved over now? We're set up and settled in here and spent the summer exploring the hot springs around here, among other things :sly: PM me .

btw..me ..a bastard ? ! Hey my parents were married, if only for awhile ! :lmao:

Nice photos Acorn, I'm just getting into photography myself. Picked up a Rebel XTi and will be getting a new lens(or several) for Christmas when I decide upon what to get. Looking at the 50mm fixed and possibly a telephoto, but who knows. I got 2x 2gb cards since the company decided to double ship them to me :D I'll get some photos I took recently up in an album(they're taken with the kit lens so they're pretty weak).

Start Slow. Every time you do portraits look at your previous shoots and see what was good and what could have been done better. Write lots of notes or keep a journal , and check the weather! Its funny how the weather influences the overall product and lighting.
Clients : Take notes about what they want, check the location ahead of time to map out the best locations/angles . Time of day for outside work . Different angles of light and shades of light for certain times of day.
Extra batteries.
Extra memory cards
Tripod(s)
Lighting equipment ( Bounce flash, reflectors, batteries, cords, smiles :) )
Don't worry about upgrades to your equipment (except lenses :) ), or 5x7 "blackbox" style cameras just yet. My fave cameras are made by Hasselblad...mucho dinero though and for the x-tremely serious photographers.
Its damned expensive, but its a lot of fun and can be a decent career :D

Hey there.. I must have dried up and forgot this thread ;)

I wound up with the XTI for 2 reasons

1. Costco!

2. Canon's lense situation was just so much more attractive that Nikon's.

I got the camera with the kit lense and picked up a telephoto on a boxing day special.

I have a long wa to go to figure out what the heck I am doing but I like the pics so far.... just need to learn how not to mess them up when editing ;)

This is pretty good advice. I'm a pro photographer myself.

Just to emphasize an important bit...

Buy the best lenses that you can afford, good glass is far far more important then the camera body.

True dat. I've found Nikoin lenses are really nice to work with, and Tamron is my fave aftermarket lens manufacturer . I used an old Yashica FR-II 35mm SLR for many years with Tamorn lenses cuz I was so broke at the time it hurt ! BuT...the quality of the pics is still pretty good . I didn't get a lot of chances to do much shooting this winter , too frikkin cold ! I'll post some landscape shots sometime of the area I live in . I have a desktop collage on Devianart of this area.

Personally, I shoot Canon equipment. I have had some third party lenses in the past.

I shot a Tokina 300 2.8 for awhile and a Tamron 28-70 2.8... I must say that now that I have the means, I'll never buy anything but Canon lenses.

My Canon 300 2.8IS totally blows the Tokina away. And I can't remember the last time I used the Tamron lens.

So, in my opinion, if you can buy the name brand glass, do it, it's worth it.
