View Full Version : Player Events, we Love 'em!

Hi everyone!
On behalf of the whole team here at Aventurine, we'd like to thank the community for their initiative and ongoing efforts in creating and running player driven events. Be they tournaments, fun events or just random acts of kindness (you can call it carebearing if it makes you feel better ;)), the community on both servers has shown time and time again that they care. We'll have you know that we're very interested in player-run events!
After my blog entry a few days ago, some of you might have guessed that the development team has a strong presence in-game. Indeed, keeping tabs on what's happening, evaluating the player experience and last but not least, taking footage and screenshots of real in game happenings is important to us.
We also really enjoy keeping an eye on player created events and we're usually there when these are happening. For example, several of us, including Aventurine's CEO, where watching from the shadows during the last 1vs1 Tournament on EU organized by Ninogan Swiftstep. We'd like to congratulate the organizers and the participants of this tournament. As tiny token of appreciation we thought you might enjoy watching a short video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwcTkpfI0_M&hd=1) we put together with moments from the fights. We hope to be able to do this more often (of course, also for the NA server), and we're very much looking forward to your next events.
Make sure you check out the Community Event Forums (http://forums.darkfallonline.com/forumdisplay.php?f=74) for an event near you. Additionally, we created a new facebook photo gallery (http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=25634&id=134645883249871) specifically reserved for screenshots from player created events.
Happy fighting!

Haha, i dunno how you keep up with those stories.
If it was true then why would i keep spamming the suggestion forums ? :).
That said Frankfall is somewhat catchy, so it might be time to change the games name before a asian relase.
On the video:
Great job, and its amazing how good it looks as well as its simply a masterclass in how pvp should be.
The only thing needed is less stat grind so its not only the early game macroers who can compete :)
great stuff, keep it coming.

Nice short video Tascha, and yes we need film crews. Best Darkfall advert would be ingame footage of sieges, etc, not gay cinematics that other games choose.

Fantastic angles, Game-Masters should do this more often. This is great marketing for the game because your recording is of fantastic quality and the editing is quite nice.
I have a suggestion; there are quite a few Video Engine Optimization softwares that allow you to upload to over 50 video web sites automatically, (Eg adds to google, vimeo, dailymotion, metacafe to name a few more than youtube). The advantage in doing this is you get a small amount of additional traffic from views through channels such as 'newest videos', or subsequent searches of the meta info you add.
The software is automated except in instances where you fill a captchya and it auto sends that to the site.
My opinion is that when you spent the time making videos its nice to then get leverage by spending 15 minutes getting the video to 50 sites. You can then use this array of videos for whatever end, certainly they are at the very least additional backlinks, or can be used for sophisticated SEO techniques like juicing.
I run a little internet marketing practice you are welcome to PM me and I'll tell you which software title I use in-house.

Nice, more developer interaction is a good thing and shows some relation between player and developer. I hope we'll see more of this.
For example, several of us, including Aventurine's CEO, where watching from the shadows during the last 1vs1 Tournament on EU organized by Ninogan Swiftstep.
Don't let him watch live sieges, though. I fear the offensive public chat might make him force the addition of a chat language filter. And considering 65% of Darkfall's ingame chat includes some form of offensive or 'bad' language, we might suffer from a server-wide chat communication blackout.
Nice video anyway, It was rather funny that it ended when Xzyzz died. :)

A neutral/invisible, overview and also the "in the face" perspective of sieges is really needed for some good advertisement videos.
I hope AV can make some siege videos like that, and get some good footage from real DF combat as the old trailers are rather lacking and don't portray real combat at all. (1 hit kills, standstill meleefall, weird clothing etc)

As others have said, this kind of video captured during sieges could prove to be an excellent marketing tool. The game a newbie sees when they log in, and the endgame are so very different... it'd be cool to give new/potential players a glimpse of what is in store for them.
Great video and i hope to see more like it in the future =)

They should have created videos like this with the WW1 and WW2 fights. That woulda been some ridiculously good marketing.
Even today on the smaller scale battles this is pretty cool, if Game-masters were tasked with invis filming sieges they could shoot some really good footage using their teleport powers etc. Of course it helps to have a beasty computer so you can shoot it at max res so when you scale it down to youtube it holds data well.
They could like film both sides preparing, travelling, and attacking each other, and get some really interesting war strategy angles as well as the pvp action.
In case nobody from AV got my last post on this very topic i made. Here it is, I strongly suggest anybody from AV interested in video production read my suggestion thread where I profiled a successful Darkfall video:
http://forums.darkfallonline.com/showthread.php?t=264216
I mentioned that well shot videos could be great for the game. At the time I wrote that there were 350 views on basher's post, its not at 4000 since then. THe user comments section shows a horde of users stating they were going to try out darkfall as a direct result of the video. The post I referenced shows:
<user1> LOL WHERE DO I GET THIS GAME!!!!
<user2> Been watching some videos on the game. looks fun. downloading now.
etc.
In fact there has been a steady stream of users for the past entire month. Imagine a fleet of 20-40 of these videos. The production cost is almost nothing and the lead generation is quite high.
---
In case the dev's missed my suggestion I hope that my suggestion post gets to somebody so they can use this for market research :)

I liked the video and the innitiative overall. But on the other hand, I understand why aventurine doesn't have any lags - Even ninogan has a worse pc. To actually fraps the fight with all details on, including shadows and to do it with such a quality And on top of that have a smooth gameplay.. damn.
Just remember that the average darkfall player doesn't own a nasa computer

This is wicked. If DEVs want to do REALLY cheap advertising, have your camera crew prowl around the sea-towers, port to villages around capping and get more of these kinds of videos up. They don't have to be long. In fact, the more videos of this kind of length you put up the better, because it shows the living, breathing, competetive world you've built.
Great initiative and I REALLY hope you guys keep this up. Do more. Find the day-to-day PVP. Follow the well known PVPers around and see what they get up to, moar epic footage plz :)
$id Viciou$
11-04-2010, 03:55 AM
They should start doing news with big sieges and show a video of some footage every month! That would be tight. The word would spread faster online if the DEVs followed the player-made storyline more often and shared it with the world from points of view that are not available to us.

Imagine seeing yourself as a speck on the ground running around at a large siege because the view was from far above and shown in one of the news vids. That would be so cool! Darkfall videos seen on youtube and stuff like that are already becoming some of the coolest game videos out there. Being able to record from high up in the sky and stuff like that would make the videos even better. Don't stop recording . ... definitely don't stop! Be the first MMORPG development crew to dominate in the AV (audio/visual) realm. Make the best videos out there and post them so that people who do not play are still interested in watching the news of what people are doing in Darkfall. That would be tight! Seriously I can imagine how much cooler it would have been seeing some of the fights that I've been in through the DEVs eyes in some news post and think that it would have helped keep people interested in the game more when I look back on days where there were more people playing. People could be complaining about the broken alignment system or some crap while you show them some cool race vs race battle footage and make them think twice about it.
