Ever dreamt of following in the footsteps of legendary treasure-hunters to uncover valuable hidden artifacts? This is for all you explorers and adventurers out there who love to find special treasures! Hunting monsters for their loot now has the added opportunity of discovering Darkfall's new treasure maps.
In order to get down to business, you'll need to speak with your resident NPCs who will teach you the necessary skills to read maps. They'll also teach you how to make your own shovel in order to dig up the buried objects.
Darkfall's treasure maps come in different varieties and some could be much more valuable than others. If you don't want to do the dirty work yourself, you can become a map trader and deal in these precious objects instead. Treasure maps can be traded, sold, and even pried from the cold hands of your victims.
After a treasure map has come into your possession, you can activate it in your backpack or bag and the treasure map details will appear on your screen. Don’t' expect the maps to give away their secret that easily. Unfortunately these maps are quite old and so they might be frayed, withered and torn making it difficult to make out the exact location of the treasure. They will however point you in the right direction and provide plenty of hints for you.
For now, as long as you have one or more Treasure Maps in your backpack, you will be able to dig up the associated items. We are already planning on expanding this system, which means you can expect additional treasure hunt features being added on top of the one we talked about today.
Let the digging begin! (http://www.darkfallonline.com/images/trasure_hunt_01.jpg)

PLS keep the spotlights coming during the following days and weeks; it makes the waiting for the expansion much more bearable.
Nice feature, but will be never used like this trade routes unless it has really GOOD rewards.
Hopefully they will get it this time around.
trade routes are good idea but its just not worth to travel for 40 min risking 5000g to get 4500g and some random low lvl stuff. they can fix that too
it would be cool for tresure maps that best maps haev more parts so you have to get them trading other players that have found map whit same mark as yours. for geting 4 parts of best map whit same mark reward shold be super cool.

Great Feature ! This for once really brings People out and in to the world !
Now PLEASE make them have treasures that are worth going for them instead of just selling them like Veilron keys, AND the most important, don't make it another SUPER RARE drop like Deeds and Addons !

I believe SWG had something similar.
Nice bit of fluff and I hope the rewards will be worthwhile.
Get rid of the useless broken chests and low value treasure chests in the world and replace them with a decent loot reward.
This could be cool, but why not allow us to place our own treasures that people could find.
player made tresure map is cool idea too and can be used for events.

In ultima online Tmap hunters made great cash and you could get the maps from fishing and mob drops.
The treasure from maps was lvl of map dependent very cool feature they are adding and will add alot of content and something to do besides pvp pve.
Its importent if your going to bring in more peepz. Great addition to the sandbox!

I like the sound of this too.
I did at first think it'll be 150 gold & a herring like most random things in darkfall.. however, when it says some maps are more valuable than others, makes me think these will be scaled, like neithal, theyril chest etc that have worthwhile rewards. These drop of mobs of the appropriate difficulty.
Nice update

One thought spring to mind, part of it being nice and shiny specially combined with the last mentioned features, the "event sticks" that allow you to make your own treasure hunts to go along with these.
The thing I is, how many will there be, if you think of these as quests, these are questlines you can get as drops.
It's not like Chaos chests that spawn randomly and then it's done.
If there are 10 "basic" treasure-maps 6 advanced and two superior, will these "quests" be static or dynamic?
Due to the fact there are maps tied to them it sounds pretty static to me.
That the location of these won't be dynamic results in people being able to check these areas same way they check entrances to dungeons.
Once you have completed these maps once, the next time you get one it will be nearly the same.
I'm not saying it's a bad feature, I love it!
However I think there could be some work done to get a dynamic system implemented aswel to go along with it.
A system where you don't get a drawn map, instead a dynamically created location similar to the Chaos Chest spawning randomly, a system where it gives hint such as north of, location, or east of location or close to and similar, like I believe you already have but it's dynamic with the amount of details deciding if it's basic, advanced or superior.

But like others have said, make the drops not so rare for the maps, and make the rewards worth going after. You do this and you may have a great system on your hands.

Awesome!
As an improvement, could be nice to also have players being able to hide their treasures and making maps for them. I'm thinking about quest for youg players : hide a small chest in the middle of a spawn. They need to find it, kill the mobs and then dig for the treasure!
thanks, first expansion feature that is awesome :D
I'd say second. The roaming mobs was the first one, if memory does not fail me and its part of that XPack.

Very, very nice. At leat on the paper.
Lets see how it's implemented however, these could be either awesome or useless.
The best thing would be various type of maps: some with low rewards, but not so rare, and some with great reward but harder to drop.
Anyway, this is the way, and thank you for the unexpected saturday spotlight! :)

Guess everyone here hopes for the lower tier maps (that drop from noob mobs) to drop a few k, and the decent maps to drop alot of niceness :D + alot of stuff in the middle.
GREAT ADDITION :D just make sure its a substaintial reward (and a commom drop) and everyone will be happy :)

it wouldn't because I kinda implied that you cant get skills of greens anymore, like you dont get alignment from them. i mean who on earth is so retarded and actually implements alignmentgains from greens. HOHOHO UNTHINKABLE....seriosuly some people will never learn.

well then AV should do the same they should do to prevent alt alignment farming: locking a players worth of alignment/skillgains after x damage done to him or x times killed.

Might not be that "NEW", depends on how they do it.
UO has Treasure Maps, Level 1 - 6.
Level 1 : 1k gold, regs, and several low end magic items.
Level 2 : 2k gold, more regs and more low end magic items.
Level 3 : 3k, regs and more med level magic items.
Level 4 : 4k, regs, stuff.
Level 5 : 5k, regs, more stuff.
Level 6 : 6k, regs even more stuff, and 1 special item
All level maps were soloable.

As i thought it would be when you mentionned treasure maps.
I have 2 concerns though:
-Loot better be good :D
-Since it says that maps aren't as simple as giving you the loc and etc... i am really fearing that there's only a bunch of 50 set places where a treasure can be and each time you get a map it points out to one of those locations.
Why?? Because after a month everyone will know all the locations and there will be no more fun deciphering the map, just saying "oh this is a map for X location".
It HAS to be random, the maps have to be somewhat randomly generated and unique each time, and further on... It is essential if you don't want this to go into oblivion after a month.

For now, as long as you have one or more Treasure Maps in your backpack, you will be able to dig up the associated items. We are already planning on expanding this system, which means you can expect additional treasure hunt features being added on top of the one we talked about today.
Sounds very cool. My concern is the implementation, though. I don't know why the team doesn't feel the need to code in a complete feature.
Trade routes and villages are being implemented in stages, and you see where that's gone (boredom).

Wow. So the humans get to keep their "metro sexual" bandana around their neck.... nice....
I like this but my question is.... Is there going to be items exclusive to treasure hunting. Like you can only find them in treasure hunting. DF needs more rare items like what I'm talking about.
you should make a tool in game or out of game does not metter for players so they can made treasure maps and send you so you can pick good maps and put them in map database. after you find treasure map revels the mapmaker. rewards for player made maps can be set by AV or you can choese small, med, big reward when you make map.

Its pretty awesome that you know how this feature will be implemented. Really. Thanks for enlightening us all with your abundance of knowledge on the matter.

Sounds interesting, hope they're worthwhile and that it's fun to track down the maps and treasures.

The Uo Tmap hunt will work well here, I like!
On paper, sure the idea is swell. But DFO does not have instant travel like UO did. Not everyone here has the same access to ease of travel all over the map.
==========
10 pages of posts all saying "good! great! wonderful!" But I see one thing I don't like about this, and I'm going to have to be the devils advocate here.
All I see of the outcome of this feature is that zerg clans with 20+ holdings scattered all over the map are going to be the only ones who get to really enjoy this feature.
Portal hop city to city get close to the treasure, loot up, portal to next city close to the next treasure spot... rinse and repeat...
Clans without holdings are going to be shit out of luck to enjoy this. All they will be able to do is hope to sell the maps at a decent price.
This feature does more to reward those who already have everything in their favor, and does little to nothing for everyone else.
So hurry up zerglings, go take some extra holdings to maximize your treasure hunt loot per hour gains. Get those portals ready to do some serious map hopping, and reap the rewards of portal power at it's finest.
Anyone wanna take bets if AV considered this angle?

No. Everyone can travel, you don't need portals to get to a treasure. Portals are bad when it comes to short times, when it comes to getting to a specific place with plenty of time, portals aren't that big of an advantage to the clan owning.

Orolt, it's fairly obvious that players don't need portals to travel to the locations. The point is that those with more portals spread across the land will have a much greater advantage over those who have no portals.

Yes, it's really not very hard to launch in to somebody's city and use the portal quickily. 9 times out of 10, you'll have no resistance, atleast on EU-1. Hopefully that number changes when the expansion comes out.
This. It's really easy, at least on EU-1. 9 times out of 10, you'll have little trouble launching in to an enemy holding, and using their portal entrance.. but it depends on the city. Sure, it's 1 extra shard, but they're easy enough to get.

I think this will be an awesome new option for the gaming community. I've herd some concerns voiced about not being able to get to the multitude of locations treasure may be hidden at. It shouldn't need to be a problem unless there are time limits on using the maps. I would just stock pile them in my bank until I was taking a trip cross continent. I do not belong to a big clan with multiple holdings and I have still managed to see most of the world. My only concern is hoping that when they first come out maps drop frequently so we can get comfortable with how to use them.

i see were your coming from, make it so if you were kill a mob on ruby the treasure map should be for ruby or a small island near ruby, harder mobs like a dragon would maybe have high level treasure maps that would lead you around the world. it would be lame if u killed mob on niff and had to go to carin, only clans or zergs with access to binds on each continent would benefit from this

I believe SWG had something similar.
Nice bit of fluff and I hope the rewards will be worthwhile.
Get rid of the useless broken chests and low value treasure chests in the world and replace them with a decent loot reward.
I was thinking UO and yes that game definitely had something similar. I know because I still play it from time to time and do treasure hunts :)
First their system had set locations a treasure could be found at; maybe around 50 in total so people would make an archive of all possible treasure spots so it was too easy to find the treasure. Lately they've randomized it to make treasures found possibly in any part of the world so long as it can be reached so you can dig there. Maps I'd say have somewhere between a 1-5% chance I'd say of dropping off of a mob in UO and I think that's a decent chance.
Additionally in UO, the value of the treasure to be found is based on the difficulty of the mob that dropped it, and I think that would carry over well in Darkfall. A goblin's treasure map would not yield a particularly great reward but a menhir sentinel's would be quite good. Actually in UO they sorted it out in something like 5 or 6 different "levels" of treasure maps based on general mob difficulty that dropped said map. What clearly happened in UO which does not look like it will happen in Darkfall treasure hunts is once you dig up the treasure, mobs would spawn with the chest to defend the treasure so you would need to defeat them first before being able to get to the chest.
In addition, UO had the feature of lockpicking and trap removal skills as treasure chests would always be locked and trapped so you'd have to take care of that before getting to the loot. You need cartography skill to decipher the treasure map (be able to double click it to view it and see the actual map to ascertain the treasure's location). Lower level maps dropped by easier mobs took little cartography skill to decipher, and higher level ones took higher skills of cartagraphy; skill cap of 100 much like Darkfall's skill system. Hell you even needed mining skill to use a shovel and higher mining skill meant you could be a little further from the dig site and still uncover the treasure when choosing to dig there. However in Darkfall it looks like it's been simplified much like NPCs teaching you how to read scrolls to learn spells/skills; you buy that once and it doesn't skill up; you're good to go for all treasure hunts. I prefer that they remove more skills to grind in Darkfall and just let you get on with the treasure hunt because that's really the fun part of it all.
I'm fine with just the fun of figuring out where the treasure is and digging it up. The only fights would be mobs that might just happen to spawn near where the treasure is or players that happen to be in that area, and that sounds like what Darkfall's system will be like.
In sum I think this sounds GREAT so long as 1) drop rate of maps is decent. I think they should be AT LEAST as frequent as skill/spell scrolls dropping though I think that's on the low end and probably should drop a bit more often; 2) reward is worth the trouble of the hunt; 3) possible treasure locations are randomized and reachable anywhere in Agon where digging is possible and not set locations like the way it used to be in UO, or else treasure hunting becomes too easy once people have written all the coordinates for possible treasure spawns.
This is great stuff AV and I too am excited about it, hoping it is well implemented :)
Thank you for the spotlight!!

Nah it would effectively force harvesting skills on players who don't want to tediously harvest to be viable since their combat wouldn't be as effectively hard hitting as those with the harvesting skills. lol you could add 100 herb gathering giving a bonus to sithra damage since they're like sickles but it's all just silly when you think about it. Does nothing but adds another skill set to grind to 100 and then there's "mastery" for that harvesting skill and players desire LESS of a grind in Darkfall not MORE it's just a bad idea given the great many players who despise grinding skills up in Darkfall don't give them more to worry about grinding than they already have. Now I could be selfish and say yay to this since I harvest my ass off and already have surging skills of every mastery except for fishing but imo it's just plain a bad idea to force harvesting on every warrior who doesn't want to do it just so he can do a little more damage.
Only reason I brought up UO (staying in subject with the spotlight) is because they have a working treasure hunting system which Darkfall should consider as they design their own so it ends up being a huge success for their players.

he's talking of a skill to craft shovels. It doesnt mean they're not going to have that skill craft pickaxes and other tools.
Who doesn't have harvesting mastery to 100 yet?
Anyway,
Player crafted tools would be more duarable
and count towards true forge. Instead of making useless armour peices and rank 0 weapons for the skill gain you could make tools that are actually usefull to your whole clan.

UO really did get these right - aside from the fixed locations, which actually I think are now random.
more thoughts - some repeated...
- maps should be more/less difficult to decipher depending on the difficulty of the mob it dropped from
- maps should spawn mobs when popping the chest, mobs should be of a difficulty equal to that of the chest/map
- should have cartography and lock-picking skills... c'mon it's more crap to grind but so what, these are actually immersion skills and depending on how prestige classes impact magic schools, etc. there may be more room in the future for more skills
- should be able to craft the shovel, but also all other tools
- maps should not spawn treasure in unobtainable places... (i.e. dig "here" on the ocean floor)
// similar use of mechanic , but still different ... yes, copy UO more...
- fishing should have a rare chance to yield message in a bottle (MiB) which has the same t-map map functionality but with more nautically themed treasure/items, deeper sea and/or deep sea mobs should have chance to drop higher quality MiB

It is also pretty easy to think of neat applications for cities, hamlets, etc...
