View Full Version : North American PvP League

I've been running this through my head for a while now. I know this can be done, but I want to see the player feedback.
A PvP league, where you sign up a team and challenge other teams to PvP battles. They can be 1v1 or up to 5v5 (5v5 may be increase depending on how well this goes).
How it works:
1. A website dedicated to the league. This is where you register your team, browse other teams, challenge, place bets(tbd), and Fight for #1 on the rankings.
2. Teams of at least 5 players sign up. You choose a team name, assign the captain, etc... The players can be of different clans, alliances, races. It doesn't matter.
3. Challengers pick 3 different times and 2 locations (of specific ones to choose from on website) for a fight. The challenged team then chooses which one of each of those works for them. Being on North America server, we can restrict challenge times to appropriate times. No 4am shit. I'm not sure how far in advance the challenge will be made, but I'm thinking 3 days is plenty of notice.
4. The fight will take place and screen shots of kills will need to be taken. This is where the it gets a little iffy and we need to come up with rules. It's open world, so anything can happen. Other PvP groups may roam through, one team may bring friends and 'cheat'. The best way I can think of is... Anything goes, last team standing wins. Again, these rules are the hard part. If needed, maybe people could sign up as Refs to fights and determine the winners.
That's the basics.
It has been done in the past. I was on OGL for quake 2 and it worked out well.
So, what does everyone think? I'll put my time into getting it working if people show a lot of interest.
I'm hosting the NA public ventrilo which could be put to use for this too.

I don't think you should have it set up as a "challenge" system.
It should be more of a bracket. Season start date is given, as well as season end. All teams have to be registered a week in advance of the start date, then you decide who plays who for the first rounds. Then you assign who fights who next. Goes on like this until the season is over. Then start another season.
This way, every team fights every other team. There is no "OMG TEAM Rad just killed TEAM Losers all the time, so they have 1000 wins, and no losses!"

Good point, but I think having both is the best option. Also, there a ways to prevent stat stacking, I forget the exact rules, but other leagues prevent this and we can just use their systems.
I'm still waiting for a larger response before moving on. I'm on break from school till 9/13. If I could get a good picture this week it would really help. Ask some clannies to respond to this. I'll try to get a better feel this week too.

I've decided to go ahead with this idea. The details of my original post are a rough draft of how things will work. I bought the domain and the website is under construction.
Due to resources, I will only be offering services to the NA server. Once it is up and running, I will gladly help an serious EU players wanting to run this on EU server.
Update: My personal deadline to have it functional is December 15th, 2010. (Original goal of 11/1/10 is delayed. It's a two man team doing this and the other guy is in Alaska for a month.)

We'll keep an eye on this for a future spotlight once everything is in place.

this is a great idea.
going to need a very dedicated/smart leader.
Thanks for doing this, Pallist. I was wondering why this hasn't been done before you made this thread.
As far as rules goes...
How about a ref list? Reputable players would be placed on the ref list and treated like middlemen. Teams wanting to setup a fight would contact the opposing team and select a ref off the list in advance or just find someone that is online at the scheduled duel time.
I also support "anything goes" format.

I support this ideal. As well as the ref idea it's a good way to get fights in on off times or when not every one is loged in.
Another question I have is there going to be rank as far as skill.
Foe example say like players with so many schools with so many cap skills in thos schools melée cap or say less then 75 master or 25 master no masters ranks. If that makes sence.
Another thing is I think the website you are building should be invite only to keep it as sucured as possiable to keep scouchers from inter fearing on a sacantioned fight.

Anyone should be able to challenge anyone within a certain amount of their rating and the other way around. using a 1500 point system (common in a lot of games, from yahoo games to WoW arena), players with 1400 points cant fight players with 1600 points. This prevents abuse and promotes more interesting fights.
The database will be invite only. Players will need to contact me in game on the character they wish to subscribe with. Once they are added, they will have proper access to challenge players, and create/join a single team.
There will be a public section to the website and a member section.
The public section will include an overview of all match types (1v1, team vs team, etc), able to browse locations for challenges and details, able to view news and challenge history, leader boards, FAQ, etc.
The member section will contain a profile section and a challenge section.
Long term plans are to integrate real time chat through irc and a real time message/challenge system for on the fly fights. I aim for the website to be a functional interface for the league. If anyone played Tribes 2, that GUI is a bit of inspiration for me.

I should edit my original post to be a bit more accurate. Probably tonight, all my notes are at my gf's apartment.
Right now, Ref plans are: (all plans are subject to change)
1. When a player makes a challenge, he has the option to check off sanctioned match.
2. Sanctioned matches have additional time before the match to ensure a Ref can make it.
3. A sanctioned (Ref'd) match requires payment to a ranking member of Darkfall Deathmatch (Clan I am running to staff the league) prior to the match (gold amount not yet decided).
4. Outcome of the match will be determined by the Ref.
4a. If there is no way to determine the winner (example: Ref get ganked), players may agree to take a draw (BOTH players must agree to a draw. If one player refuses, he forfeits and takes a loss) or schedule a rematch free of the Ref fee.
5. There will be a unique ranking system to sanctioned matches.

That would be fun man.
I think league style would be better then ladder.
Also i think more people would sign up if you split it up into a couple divisions. A lot like cal-o , im , m, i . That way you don't just have 5 teams playing. And you don't have DHW team fighting team NEW.

Quick reply:
Each player has a his own rating.
You do not need a team for the 1v1 rankings.
Each team has it's own rating.
Individual ranking and team rankings dont effect each other.
Teams have a roster limit and can be made from people of different clans. The top players can join up to be the "dream team". Clans can and will fight their own clan mates in 1v1 and Team DM for top ranking of each catagory.
Another teaser for long term goals: gambling on sanctioned matches through Darkfall Deathmatch Bookies.
Future game modes will be made (ctf for example) and the teams will carry into each mode.
