Well, I'm sure alot of you know that a bunch of modders have been working on upgrading the game Freespace 2. The original devs released the source code and people have done a great job of upgrading it. I finally got around to trying it and WOW! It's like a new game. I just wanted to let people know if your looking for a good space sim, this is it. It doesn't matter if you played the original game or not. FSO is much improved and worth trying again. The game is free if you can find it. Bittorrent would your best bet. Most of the torrents I've seen already have the FSO files with it. If not get the downloads from these two links..

unzip into the game directory and use the new launcher. Enjoy!
I hope the mods don't have a problem with this since the source code is now free.

Yea, been following them for a while. I just love how pretty beam fights are on my X800 with all the Graphic ggodies turned on, right up to the point one incenerates my ship. You'd think after what 10 or so years I'd have learned to stay out from between two destroyers.
FS2, timeless goodness.

Looks like fun, plan to check it out. FS1 was fun but thats all I can remember.

Source code aside, it says in the license that you can distribute the game freely to your "friends". We're all friends here, right?

The one I liked hasn't given me one problem yet.

I tried loading it, finally got it to run, but the first mission I was on went no where. I just kept following my wingman around these astroids, until I got fed up with waiting and attacked him. He of course didn't fight back so it was just stupid.
Which one is a good mod? The babylon 5 one doesn't seem to be that great.

I haven't installed any of the newer releases but if its still the same as before make sure you downloaded all the content packs that go with the game. Also hardlightproductions should have a thread about installing the game in detail.
As for stand a lones. Mechanically Beyond the red line is the best I've seen. It requires a bit of skill (game and control setup wise) and joystick to fly competitively though.
