View Full Version : The Necessity To Go To The Moon

I was browsing various sites discussing energy(I've taken a curiosity to the various methods to obtain energy lately) and found this gem. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94rEqHP9dOQ)

Its basically about how we can create actual fusion to provide energy for America using Helium-3.

This is only found in usable amounts on the moon, and a cargo load of this product is able to fuel America's energy needs for a year.

Apparently, many nations are launching programs aimed at developing this.

But unluckily, Obama has ordered NASA to halt the return to the moon project. (http://www.cnn.com/2010/TECH/space/02/02/nasa.constellation.reaction/index.html?hpt=C1)

Last I checked its all the governments that are all over this. Something tells me to go to space for energy needs alone is not something that private capital could get excited about. But we will see.

Yeah I see the lack of interest for companies to travel to space based on energy/environmental needs.

I'm hoping space tourism kicks off and would be used to create further innovations in space travel.

Eh, I doubt private companies will have the funds or the will to do it. I think its something government or governments will at least have to kick off, then it might catch on with companies.

I'd love it if we started colonizing during my life time. There are plenty of things on the moon that make it worth going to, even if its just to figure out some things about the Universe we live in or the creation of Earth.

I agree that its not and should not be a priority in the US's current state, but I think its something we should become a greater part of once we get back on our feet, as a nation, financially.

Mythbusters proved that crap wrong

That episode was by far my favorite. I was skeptical of the moon landing before I watched that episode. I had always wanted to believe it, but there was so many things that just didn't make sense to me that were brought up in the counter-arguments. Then the mythbusters debunked all the big ones and pretty much convinced me it was real.

for one, NASA forced astronauts to lie before. don't bother clearing that up, i heard it myself, speaking while in orbit, and saying another when asked by press.

secondly, your record is terrible. americans believe all kinds of crap when it ruins the little illusion they created for themselves, a result of their knowledge that they are incapable to change anything, admiting it would just confirm they're useless and nobodies.

9/11 couldn't be an inside job even when there is clearly a motive and you can see mini explosions before the fall.

there were WMDs in Iraq. oh, just a one time lie, everyone does it. we're also pussies as far as N.Korea is concerned, although they already tested WMDs.

Bin Laden is somehow in Afghanistan but not there now, he many be in Pakistan but we're too afraid to deal with them, while we can invade a country after a terrorist attack if it's weak enough.

^yes, CIA didn't lie to us. they can't lie to us. the means justify the end is not something a US government believes in. CIA cells acting without government knowledge is not a conspiracy and shows no authority of third groups or an ability to influence US actions.

jews are simple americans, they just have lobbies out of hobby, their "societies" are also boy scouts gathering together, hell even kids do it in halloween, they just happen to also be extremely powerful people and filthy rich.

recorded societies even since before the middle ages never excisted. their modern counterparts are not known, it's a conspiracy lolz.

I think Obama is right in his decision.

It was extremely short sighted, but what can you expect from any politician that needs to worry about being re-elected

The reason private corporations have such a hard time getting into space is because of the restrictions placed on them by the government through NASA.

They have to jump through a thousand hoops, committee's, review boards with regards to safety, design, crew training etc that costs them millions and takes years to complete. If private corporations could just build a shuttle and get out there with little restrictions we would already be gathering resources not only from the moon but potentially from the near earth asteroids. We have the technology, we have had the technology for over 50 years, but we are not allowed to use it.

Obama doesn't have to spend a cent of taxpayer dollars to kickstart space exploration and resource gathering, he just has to loosen the chokehold currently stopping others from doing so

Nice one. You are skilled in condescension. Of course, your unfounded positions seems so objective, so powerful, when you combine them with blanket statements and condescension. You have provided zero proof, and instead have asked us to "find the proof ourselves".

Conspiracy theories are, in many ways, like certain religious stories. They both develop as a sort of response to a real event. When the real seems too strange, or in some cases to dull, we give it mysterious circumstances, and suddenly it becomes a wildly interesting story.

You find proof where you want to.

i already answered what i think about those that want proof for "conspiracies". you won't get it.

but if having a motive, having signs and clues, having an action result, having a past etc, is not enough to make a conclusion, to get suspicious or even question the "truth" they feed you, then that's even more unhealthy.

it doesn't take a written confession or court decision to realise that something is not right.

Read more history - and not just the stuff about conspiracies. Story is the same today as it ever was. Stop trying to figure out 'whodunnit' and just be principled.

Even if your not religious - the book of Ecclesiastes out of the bible is pretty soothing to me and I imagine anyone.

"So I hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me. All of it is meaningless, a chasing after the wind. I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I knew I must leave them to the one that comes after me. And who knows whether he will be a wise man or a fool?"

Edit: Life is transitory - just do the right thing. No real reason to fret about it - it's meaningless.

history says that americans were lied to before. it says that the means justify the ends. it says that countries and people are capable to hurt their own people to further their goals.

the US are not some exception, so you better start trying to figure out "whodunnit" if you don't want to remain an ignorant herd of sheep, but as i said, you're probably happy in your own "i am good here and do what i can" lalaland, like most americans. cowards.

I'm a huge proponent of any sort of space exploration/research/development/etc., but I have to say that it seems somewhat backward to me to go dashing off a massive R&D program to restart manned missions to the moon when the Apollo program already produced perfectly good solutions. Add two shakes modernization; stir until satisfied. Not every technical solution needs to be brand-spanking new to be the best fit for the task at hand.

The call to slash reinventing the wheel in favour of intensified research spending for new solutions is, in the long run, probably the right call. Do some more work on things like VASMIR (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variable_specific_impulse_magnetoplasma_ rocket) and take a fresh look at options in five to ten years' time.
