Specs:
MB - ASUS P5N72-T Premium LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 780i SLI ATX Intel
VC - XFX GeForce 9800 GX2 1GB
Power - Antec TPQ-850 850W
Processor - Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 Yorkfield 2.5GHz LGA 775 95W Quad-Core
OS - Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

At first my monitor just wouldn't come on until the windows login screen came up. It would stay off all the way through the booting process. I didn't mess with it because I've had so many problems in the past I was just tired of fucking with it especially if it was still working. Lately, in the middle of videos the monitor would unexpectedly shut off, this last time the entire computer seemed to shut down in the middle of a video.

Now I can't get the monitor to turn back on, even at the login screen. Any idea as to why this is happening?

No clue, but this happened to me and it was so fuckin frustrating I bought a new rig instead.

When you disconnect the monitor, are you getting the 'no signal' message on the screen?

If not then try shining a flashlight into the screen when you load windows on it - the flashlight will light the screen up and if you can now see the loading screen, then you have a blown backlight. Hopefully this is it as replacing a backlight costs very little in both time and money, see this link - http://www.inventgeek.com/projects/shorts/Page1.aspx

If you do get a 'no signal' message on the screen when it is disconnected from your pc, yet it will not show the loading screen when plugged in and continues to not show the windows screen once loaded, then it may possibly be your video card that has shat itself

Seems more video card that monitor to me.

Do you have another monitor to test with?

How old is your monitor?

Monitor is as new as the computer (year and a half), and it does get the new signal screen. I have my lap top and tv I can test it with so I'll go ahead and do that in a second. It wouldn't surprise me if it's my extremely expensive graphics card fucking up... since I've had problems with it since I got it. Should have bought that expensive ass warranty.

EDIT:

I have an HDMI cable for my desktop but no HDMI connector on my laptop, but when I unplug the cable I get the 'Check Signal Cable' message on my desktop which leads me to believe that it's working fine.

Yeah sounds like vid card. Sorry mang... only other test = bring monitor over to buds house / another PC and test it. But I'm putting money on the video card at this point.

That card is pretty old and busty at this point. I have a 285 that I had to get when mine died and have been loving it. (EVGA)

DO NOT go with a 295, as it's just a single card with SLI native on it. That is such fail I don't know where to begin. The 285 is just a nice solid single card. Solid single card > *.dual.

Hmm, I got to thinking, if the graphics card failed wouldn't it default to the mb's onboard graphics card? I thought it had some kind of default system, I know that it used something like that before I installed the drivers.

You would have to yank your graphics card, and then plug into the onboard video if your MB has that.

If you don't yank the card, it won't use the onboard most of the time.

Worth a shot to rule out the monitor though for sure.
