I already posted about this before but now as I'm more familiar with the game, I'd like to make a more precise suggestion.

I understand the big idea behind the "everything's up for grabs" paradigm but when it comes to mounts, it just gets really ugly.

People dismount before entering a starter city because when you dismount infront of other players, it's like 1,2,3 GO! Everyone is running towards your mount to steal it. Once it's stolen inside a starter city, it's gone. You can't even try to kill the guy to get it back.

So, the question is... what's up with that? Why not make mount stealing a crime which will mark you gray. It's a lot more fair.

Just like nobody can steal from your stuff from your backpack until you're dead, and if someone tries to kill you in town, they become gray and get killed, so should be mount stealing. A mount is just another item, except by it's nature it's on the outside.

Therefore, I suggest the following:
1. A mount has an owner. That owner is whoever summoned it or rode on it for at least the last 5 minutes.
2. A mount is owned by a player for as long as the player is on it + 30 minutes after dismounting. That way people won't be polluting the cities with mounts knowing that nobody can take them anyway yet people can use them in town comfortably, mount and dismount to open the bank or talk to a vendor.
3. If you get on a mount that isn't yours, you'll be gray for the first 5 minutes on that mount, after which you become the owner and therefore stop being gray.

That way you can still steal someone's mount if you kill them and not have to just leave them there like in UO, yet you can use them in town and not be afraid to lose them

This certainly is a concern, but we can always try to work something out. Like off the top of my head, an ability to push away a mount if nobody's on it or push through it.
Really, this isn't the problem.

When I first got to know Darkfall (6+ months ago) I started to search on youtube for any gameplay movies. One of the most memorable vids I've seen around that time was a movie full of Mount Thefts. You just need to be careful where to dismount, and besides that a mount isn't worth that much anyway.

I am against this suggestion.

It's not about being careful. It's about using them in starter cities.
The way mounts are today, you can only be careful enough to use them between cities. Once you enter a city, in order to use the bank or vendors, you need to dismount because inside a city it'd be too dangerous.

good idea but might be difficult to code..
other suggestion I have for this:
being able to dismount while still on top of the mount
stables - you ride your mount in there, stand still in it for say 6 seconds and the mount will disappear from underneath you and appear as a figurine in the stable (maybe along with all the other mounts you have). stable would be like a little bank interface, and maybe linked to your bank

Good alternatives, but why is it so hard to code? You just give a mount owner parameter with the player's ID. I'm not sure how this game is made exactly, but if every time you sit on a mount, it checks against the mount whether it's owned, and if is so then if it's your mount or not. If not, set the player criminal

Keep it the way it is.

Bad Idea, you will certainly see people blocking entrances/exits or the bank for kicks causing more problems to the new players than if they get a mount jacked and if you choose to ride a mount into town then you should know better anyway :P

these problems are easily solvable.
Mounts are not good blockers because you can jump over them just like you can jump over a player.
Besides, I suggest they set a limit to how many mounts you can own (the figurines are just items and will not count).
If only one mount can be owned, and you can't reasonably block anybody because after all that other person can easily jump over that mount, it'll be too much hassle to get all your friends to do it. So a combination of 1 owned creature + the fact that you can jump over stuff will ensure that nobody abuses it.

bad idea -

1) mount jacking is a unique and often fun aspect in DFO. I don't want your carebearism.

2) If this were implemented people will no longer walk around but ride aroudn 24/7 - clogging the small roads in towns, and clogging up vendors.

3) PvP will be affected - People often dismount to go into archery mode. A valid strategy often is to just turn around and jump on their mount while your mount dies. Or what about a foe trying to flee and he spawns a mount - you telling me i shouldn't be able to jump on it before he does?

Seems you prefer convenience over gameplay. If you can't handle walking around a bit after dismounting outside a city, perhaps you should consider moving to a player city where mounts don't get jacked quite as much ;).

Not needed, simple as that.
Dismount further away and hike into the city, or move short distance away from other people and despawn it...it´s not like the timer is all that long. Problem solved.

It´s part of the game, even if you don´t like it.

Besides, there´s a bit of a flaw in your plan. Anyone with their brains intact can get away from the zap towers on mount.

2. People walking around is actually fine. Why not? You have a horse, you can ride it. And running on a mount looks more realistic. Today a city looks like a kindergarten. All the players running around like kids. If most of them will be on horses, it'll actually look cooler and more realistic.

3. Nobody said to make horse stealing impossible. If you PVP with someone, I would assume you do it somewhere in the wilderness. You can still steal it, and you'll just be gray for the next 5 minutes. I don't think it's just much big a deal to remain outside of a starter city for 5 minutes.

I do not think that the gameplay will be affected here. Everything you can do now, you'll be able to do if this idea is implemented. The only thing that will stop is the ridiculous situation when all the noobs run over you when you need to dismount.

Besides, there´s a bit of a flaw in your plan. Anyone with their brains intact can get away from the zap towers on mount.

The merrier. Then perhaps my idea is even less carebearish than I thought. In most cases random noobs will not be able to steal your horse, but if you really know what you're doing - good for you.

At the very least they could reduce or disable the unspawn delay.

Quite simply make it unspawn while you are still on the mount. No need to change anything big. Honestly the fact that you need to unspawn your mount away from other players is just ridiculous.
