View Full Version : Is Darkfall Free?

Is Darkfall going to be a web based browser for free, a download for free, or P2P like WoW and D&D online? Or will it be like Runescape with a free version and a P2P version with more upgrades and a larger map?
[DJ]Hugo
06-23-2006, 05:48 AM
It's a next gen, fully 3d, mass multiplayer online roleplaying game.
It's not going to be free. $15 a month I'd imagine, and $50 first ofcourse to purchase the game.
Viranth
06-23-2006, 07:47 AM
[DJ]Hugo is correct, allthough the final price hasn't been set. In other words, we don't know how much it'll cost to purchase, or how much it'll be a month.

It is gonna cost money to play, and as someone said above will most likely be 15.00 dollars a month.
Wedge

They've always stated that the monthly price will be competitive with other MMORPGs on the market when it releases. According to market trends, this puts it at $15/mo with a discount of a few dollars if you buy 3, 6, or 12 months in advance. I would imagine that's a good estimate right now, though no official announcement will be made on this until we are very close to the box hitting shelves.

Semi-related to this thread... Will DarkFall(when it's released) have Time Cards such as WoW and EQ? Because, if you didn't have them, it wouldn't affect you majorly, but minorly it would. ;) And that would mean no DF for me. :/

There is no official word on time cards or alternate payment methods. I can't even speculate on that one, it could really go either way.

I wont play a game without fee's. Fee's help keep the server(s) clean of hacks bots and some violating users. A game without fee's usually is not "kept up" and at $15 a month, put it in the day from and see it as 50 cents a day. It's really not that bad at all.
Besides the costs of maintaining an MMO's software (content updates, bug fixes, etc.) the cost of keeping a huge server up are ridiculous. Bandwidth alone for one server catering to 10k people will have to be at least $15k a month. Then there's the large network of beefy computers to actually run the server-side software, the database technician to make sure the world data doesn't get corrupted and everything wiped, security expert and firewall out DDoS attacks and whatnot, GMs, etc.
I'm sure I've left out other substantial chunks of cost, because I've never worked at a company producing an MMO. The point is, there are lots of costs inherent in keeping a game just running. If they do have a monthly fee, their actual profit margins from the fee won't be that great.
Haight

Whoa kid, if you think you have no time to play video games as a junior in high school, you are in for a world of disappointment.

My guess is the game will be between $9.95 - $14.95, since it is new I only assume it will start out at $14.95 a month. As people said earlier, the actual profit won't what people think. Bandwidth will likely be the biggest expense the company has a month, depending on how many individuals they have working for them. The general rule of thumb is a business pays about 80% of the money it receives which goes to all of it's bandwidth, employees, upgrades, rents and 20% is profit.
Tho it does look a lot better then uo, I hope the price will be the same to purchase the game, around $30 allows people to give in to the purchase a lot easier and I bet a lot of uo players would find it easy to jump on over.

I have never heard a finer paragon of verity, in other words QFT.
I have never cared how much games cost. To me games are the most economical form of entertainment over the long run, especially MMO's, considering the amount of time most people pour into these games. You go see a movie, that's $10 for 2 hours. I would gladly pay $30/month if I knew it ensured a quality gaming experience.
I've been trying to convince a good friend of mine to leap into MMORPG's. He's an avid gamer but avoids them because of the monthly fee, this coming from a guy who has a $70/month cellphone bill and $400 car payments. I just don't understand his reasoning.
$15 is a whopping 2 hours a month working at minimum wage, everyone can afford that.

Guild Wars is not an accurate example of a MMORPG. Guild Wars is a next gen Diablo/Battle.net system. Notice the MMORPGs put out by GW's parent company require monthly fees.

I won't be buying it if there is going to be a monthly fee. I would love to, except my parents wont let me(they don't like me spending all that time on the computer) :ohno: :bang:
I made a user account simply to do this post and perhaps open up a possibility... this could be easily fixed IMHO by an option set by the purchaser of the product (in this case the parents and only them) on how much time available each day of playing time IG; thus they could safely assure themselves that if their avid player (son/daughter) did indeed fail tests it was not on the part of their wallets in insuring some fun playing time for their avid student.. I hope you catch my drift..
I make this suggestion just to help my own playing experience if I decide to purchase a copy... you see, I hope that in helping those friends of mine that have been sucked into such games as WoW where anyone is a hero and hope fades quickly from a rejuvinating diversion to become a great weight on their available time and energy to other pursuits in a healthy diversified life; I might spend my time and money on Darkfall with good spirits...
I hope suggestions or threads will pop up on how to do this practically or constructive criticism on why such an option is a waste of time or energy on the part of the developers... I also hope dev's will take a note on the ease of finding people that cancel their accounts in MMO games because they feel significant deprivation of their quality of life (I am not suggesting addiction, I am putting it to your ethic sense to make a small simple change).
I hope flamers will keep in mind that people may do whatever they so choose and I am not trying to keep responible adults from playing their brains out until their retinas drop upon respective keyboards *pauses for breath* but merely an option for parents so they can sponsor the fun of their children with a light spirit!
Looking away from the fact that such an option might simply remain an unused possibility on the users' part(definition of option I presume ) this might possibly bring more customers to Darkfall, no? ;)

There will be fees, any game like this has costs to run, a developer team to pay and such like. I'm hoping the initial purchase price isn't too high and the monthly subscriptions are indeed competitive. In order to be competitive they will need to be a few bucks a month below the competition, which already surpasses the graphical offerings of Darkfall. Yes, I know, gameplay > graphics. But if you release a product even if only seemingly of lesser quality of another product, a slightly cheaper price will draw in folks who will compare the two side by side.
As long as a life time subscription option is there I'm happy. I never pay monthly. I hate having the bills each month. I'd rather pay $30 for the game and another $100 and have done for life :P

I think this is better solved by not allowing your children to play an M rated game.
Kids have no place in Darkfall.
Edit: Besides that, generally, the only people who are concerned about subscription fees are kids who expect their parents to pay for them. A subscription fee at least keeps kids from overrunning the game. If you don't fall into this catagory and a subscription fee still worries you, MMORPGs are not for you.

I disagree 30$ a month is still a cheap hobby.
I can forsee benefits for charging this much.
1. Paying 30$ for your childs video game a month makes parents reconsider and I think will limit the under mature players.
2. People willing to pay that much really want to play DFO, they are the type that understand what the devs are shooting for and like it. They don't want to change the game. You can see from this beta influx of all the post that want to change features of the game.
Now I am no financial genius or even pretend to know much about it, but charging double the going rate will mean less subscriptions. I don't think this is a bad thing, the people not willing to pay that much probably won't last in this game anyways. DFO will get more money from their targeted player base and in the long run make more money?

Conversely, the kid is absolutely right. When I was in highschool I was playing sports and had very little time for gaming other than A) opting not to do homework, which I hugely regret. Or, B) waiting for winter/spring/summer
break. I strongly urge him to keep his nose to the grindstone.

How come you just don't let a 2+ year thread die?

Is Darkfall going to be a web based browser for free, a download for free, or P2P like WoW and D&D online? Or will it be like Runescape with a free version and a P2P version with more upgrades and a larger map?
EDIT: DISREGARD THAT I SUCK COCKS

I agree i don`t care about the monthly fee, the problem i do have
is i chose to stay away from credit cards. I to am hoping they have
game cards or atlest paypal.
Abix you said your friend is a gamer, what do you figure he spends a month
on renting or buying games. Or let me guess he does not want to pay a monthly fee for a game, he downloads his games does`t he.:lmao:
$15 a month is fine $30 is alittle steep since anyone else like me that
have there wife playing at $30 a month just turns to $60 a month.
With buying to game copys plus both monthly fees and expantions...
Depends on how long it takes for expations. As for asking for a higher price so kids don`t play thats just stupid.
I can`t see it being anymore then $15 a month, If it is more then the first guy that said he wanted it to be alot is paying for mine thanks

Is Darkfall going to be a web based browser for free
I'm afraid Darkfall will not be a browser, only a video game. Have a look at Firefox, it has bookmarks, tab navigation and a useful back button. ;)
