Any specifics on why it's so much better now? I know when it first came out pvp was basically a clusterfuck with people running around and randomly swinging their swords. If you hit anything, it was more due to luck and faulty hit detection than anything skill-related. It didn't interest me then--have they greatly improved the pvp since?

I'm thinking of buying DF, I got into the beta but did'nt have time for it until now... might just wait and see what MO is really like first.

Same here, was around for beta and launch and got discouraged. Back now after a few months and the game is doing better than ever. I'd highly recommend especially with new content on the way.

Honestly. MO=fail. If you want a sandbox that already has gone some mileage put your money on Darkfall, its the only way for this game to survive and deliver, people to put their money on it and it will deliver.
I did and I rarely log in. Playing occasionally and waiting for the patch for which i don't have my hopes up for now but I hope more people will be coming in. In essence I just gave them my money because I know they need it. The issue is we might have a sandbox like no other at some time in the future. It's the only chance we will get for a game like that.
If they change the lighting maps to be able to enjoy better the country side and props at night time and at dawn or afternoon, because they don't feel right as they are IMO, and it comes soon then I am a happy man. :)

Seems more to me like problems on your end. If you fixed them you'll enjoy PvP.

The only thing that's really different is that skills level substantially faster and mobs have significantly less hitpoints.

Actually melee in this game is far from a 'cluster fuck' if you know what you're doing, also being pure melee is far more strategic than throwing unmissable nukes at your opponent, fyi.

Doing melee right is absolutely very strategic in DF. It's also not anywhere near as weak as the QQ folk of forumfall would have you believe. Either they really suck at melee or they would only be satisfied with click n' stick iWin mode.

A)Ever considered he's still hanging around to play Darkfall in the future. I.E waiting for the expansion that's coming soon.
B)Darkfall hasn't changed in months, melee system hasn't changed since they nerfed melee mastery damage.

Prepare for a huge rant that is PRO DARKFALL
To those that are curious about the changes to Darkfall, I was also someone who quit playing a while ago and then came back. For me one of the biggest problems was that I did not have the time to go to a boring wall of afk people and hit them to train my skills and felt like I could not compete well without that.
The fact is, this game is the only game I have played in a long time where I actually feel adrenaline from a fight. It's the only game where I am actually afraid of dieing and have to make quick decisions from that fear.
The above mentioned problems were already fixed with previous patches. Now with a little help I was able to find an area where I can train my character on npcs for faster gains, decent loot, and legitimate practice in fighting (yes its not comparable pvp but it still helps you master and alter your interface) The truth is that my character is still very low, but it's a lot easier to get high enough in the game to have a variety of skills to use that make the gameplay more exciting. I don't feel that I need to sit at a wall to compete. I can go out, kill some npcs, find a treasure and still feel like I am accomplishing something.
As of right now, the biggest complaint of people is that the game is not balanced with players that have multiple mage skills being overpowered. In my opinion there are many reasons why this is not a reason to avoid trying this game.
1) Every online game I have played has been unbalanced, it takes years for a good game to become properly balanced and even then people complain. The fact is, even if a game is not balanced people will still enjoy it if it fits their playstyle.
2) If you ever believe that something is overpowered in this game you can play that style without even having to make a new character. You have the option to test out the overpowered style if you want and then you can decide to either use it or seek for a way to beat it, but in the end you never are stuck with a class or character with no chance to compete in pvp until the next patch.
3) The new "expansion" coming should supposedly create a more balanced game. (IMO a balanced game takes a lot longer than people understand, but some people believe it will be balanced so we will wait and see)
Other current complaints would be related to system events and roleplaying. I think that the past 2 weeks show that the players and the devs are making strides in this area and people are beginning to enjoy some new experiences in the world.
I think overall this game offers an experience that you will not find anywhere else. It does have some flaws, but every game has its flaws. In the end you have to think about what you want to play. Do you want to pick one style when you start out and then be stuck with that play style/character/class regardless of it's strengths and weaknesses (therefore requiring multiple characters to experience everything) or do you want to be able to keep the character you trained so hard in one play style and work it up to learn another. Do you want to know that when you kill someone or die there will be no repercussions or do you want to feel the energy murdering someone and taking their belongings and running for your life to protect your own?
It's not a game for everyone, the people that complain have just forgotten about why this game is so appealing. My only hope is that the developers continue to expand the game and offer new content that will keep people motivated towards developing their characters, protecting their valuables, and taking things from others.

nov 2009... have the balls to reply with your normal trolling account LOL
You won't even have to refer to yourself in the 3rd person or go through the hassle of creating a forum account!
kids...
You can wait for an expansion and check in on the forum without badmouthing a game and trolling. If you don't play, you have no way of validating your views on the game and are bound to be wrong often (and you are). If you base your opinions and spread stuff around that you read here without validating it first in game, you're basically the forum equivalent of a manure spreader.

Nov 2009 would be a basis... it's not a baseless accusation. Your account is at most on its 5th day of existance, which is a pretty substantial coincidence. As for "empirical evidence" I think an argument could be made that my EXPERIENCES on these forums are that people who insist on wallowing in negativity tend to create forum accounts to agree with themselves.
None of this changes the simple fact that people who aren't playing DF are not in a position to tell others about DF. They also tend to annoy those of us who are playing the game and enjoying it a lot. It's the best game to come out in at least a decade. Quit flaming it.

I've basically got my mouse over the re-sub button. I'm not sure. One of the things that bothered me about this game before was that it was less about a sandbox and more about PvP. All roads led to PvP. I was hoping to have a sandbox that happened to have PvP. Has this changed? With the introduction of the expansion, will this change? Not sure I explained myself right.

Trying to avoid PvP in this game is like trying to avoid the Plague in Europe in the 1300s. I think there are people that play for other types of fun, but you will experience PvP and I think that currently the big accomplishments in this game are all based on PvP. Maybe the new patch will change that.

If the reason you quit was time, I would say it is much better now. I still don't play as often as the great players in the game with uber high stats, but at least when I do get on I don't feel like I have to macro or sit at a wall killing afk players to catch up. There will always be a difference between the players who spend entire days on the game and casual players, but now the little time I have online is more fun. Training on moving things that fight back and have loot is more fun than training at the afk wall or macroing spells. Especially if you find someone else to go out and train with.

There may not have been substantial patches, but the game has had substantial changes. There are now more players and guilds willing to help new players, there have been various player run events starting up, and the developers are even getting involved in events. All of these are huge changes from the grind, siege, repeat that used to exist.
Aventurine created Darkfall with the intent of the players creating a lot of their own content and people have started doing that.

I myself am still low and have joined the game with PvP in my mind so I don't know much about other end game material, but this is my opinion.
There are people that focus on other things and as long as you make that your goal you can probably do it. Like I remember one of the articles in the spotlight forums I think was about a guy that focused on being a treasure hunter. There are also plenty of people that focus on crafting I think. There is not as much variety as UO had, but I think that AV is trying to expand on this.

Roaming mobs are part of the expansion. I expect that the expansion is going to be a big change, just like the last one. I think that everyone is looking forward to it, except maybe one or two mages who are bitching about being gimped.
