I used to get regular lag spikes (and yes I really mean lag, ping not fps) of about 2K every few minutes.
Then I replaced the HDD which had Windows on it (DF was on another one which was fine). I also installed DF on this new HDD.
Now I don't get the spikes any more.
Just thought I'd let you know.

Maybe a good defrag will help for those with no spare HDD? I know mine is log overdue for one.

You did what would be called reformatting your computer.
This gives you a clean OS with nothing else. With this anything bad that was downloaded, an automatic update that ran a lot, or virus scan that had a mis-schedule, plus more. Could easily cause this. But by starting new all that is gone and my guess why it's fine now.
I generally reformat my PC every 5-7 months for this reason.

Edit: Oh your sig, the main person in the front. It reminds of Vork off the show "Watch the Guild" at www.watchtheguild.com
Good stuff.

Agreed this isn't going to fix everyone's problems, most problems are due to VA shitty ass programing so many leaks in this game it's not even funny, I can even begin to explain the tests I have gone through to try and troubleshot, out of address space and ping raising to 25k then receiving connection loss, for about 85% of everyone it is the game, true you may have some people with bad hardware or config settings but mostly it's just the server and the client it's insane how bad it is.
I'm receiving most of problems mentioned above and work in IT for an Inc 500 company, not trying to brag just saying I know a little about troubleshooting and the things I've went through to fix the problems shows it is mostly not internal, VA fix your shit.
Just as a test google some of those problems you will see some people saying it's hardware or routor or try downloading and installing this etc... most of those didn't fix the problem, you will more then likely not see a fourm that has A TRUE solution to fix any of those problems (for most people) due to it being server side and client end writen software issues.
I honestly I wouldn't be suprised if there is something in common we all have to whom are receiving the problems, type or routor, maybe a combo of keyboard strokes could cause it, type of hardware etc... and if that is the case once again we shouldnt have to purchased current types of hardware to play this game... they need to fix the problems now...
