Ukraine on Friday shut schools, banned large public gatherings and imposed travel restrictions for three weeks – some of the most drastic measures taken across the globe to contain swine flu – after confirming that a sudden and swift outbreak has claimed at least 11 lives.
In the latest figures released this weekend, officials said more than 50 died of pneumonia and other suspected H1N1 sicknesses. More than 2,000 people were hospitalised in connection with the “epidemic” that broke out in October in western regions of the country that border the European Union.

This section of the report caught my attention -

In a panic, many citizens flocked to pharmacies seeking to purchase medication and masks. Existing stocks quickly sold out fast sparking panic and anger at the government.

Earlier on Friday, Ms Tymoshenko warned that licences would be evoked for pharmacies that were caught overcharging for medication

I assume she meant 'revoked', but still to even mention this means some pharmacies were hiking prices to profit from the situation

Ah yeah, there's a good idea - lets all congregate together in one place with people who are obviously already feeling sick to buy medication that's entirely useless at doing anything other than relieving some symptons for a short time.

I think 5 or 6 people died in Belgium. I'd say we should initiate Exterminatus of the planet to prevent it from spreading to the Moon and Mars.

Can't we just start by exterminating Belgium first?

It isn't an exterminatus unless a planet is destroyed. 100% effective against all manner of disease, corruption, and heresy.

Most likely she is full of shit not that overcharging is bad. We said the same thing of battery sellers during Katrina and set a price control on batteries. You want to know the effect? We ran out of batteries LOL! People were buying a fuckton for "just in case".

So you think it's better to control supply through artificially inflating prices during an emergency, allowing unscrupulous people to make large profits off scared people - rather than setting an enforced price control and attempting to increase the supply through other means?

It failed in the case of batteries (and other items) during Katrina not because of the price control, but because of the poor supply infrastructure and stock control of local businesses, combined with poor emergency planning by relevant government agencies

Ok well the day government provides enough batteries (or a million other small items they never do) is the day I will say price controls are not necessarily bad.

So it's not really a big deal Elmi? That's good news, it's just another media hype then

Btw, what are the girls like in Ukraine, from the persons view living there? Any really good looking ones like you see on the net, or are they few and far between?

IMO in an ideal world, goverment should provide enough sale points with batteries priced "fairly".

They are either out of money or trying to get few more rating pts for pres. elections.

Lots of hot chicks. In any public place you'll be happy in your pants in 5-10 mins. Most of them already in a relationship, though :)

"fair" is relative to the need. How bad do you need em? How much are you willing/able to pay? If I can pay 26x what you can pay, and I want them more, its only fair I should be allowed to do so.

fucking communists.

True. But it's goverment job to supply such amount that you don't have to pay 26x to get one. You know, controlling market does not limits to restrictions only.

Really? What kind? Nationalizing?

Nope. Take for example finance market. Don't know how things are organized in US, but here, in Ukraine, our National Bank controls currency rate indirectly. When there is high demand of $$ bank sells it, etc etc

Dark Lily

It doesn't seem right that the government be controlling prices of stuff at any time. Yes they should be there to provide the basics of emergency rations, water etc but batteries? Necessary maybe but hardly a matter of life and death. If an enterprising business puts the price up when there's a high demand then fair play to them.

Likewise with the swine flu stuff, none of that actually will cure it, just mask the symptoms for a while. They should be able to sell at whatever people are willing to pay. No-one's going to die cause they can't get their lemsip!

Yeah but the banks are nationalized in the first place. Plus that is simply devaluing the currency whenever it rises aka inflation.

Ok. If you are gonna sell dead kittys (pretending they are just sleeping) to children, that's "fair play" and wont kill them. But you are still an asshole.

Same thing here, yes you can abuse people's dumbness, but that's just not right. And if goverment doesn't care about that, why would we need such goverment?

Yes, they're arseholes, but it's not illegal. I don't see an issue with abusing people's dumbness if it's not illegal and I certainly don't think that the government should be babysitting to that degree.

I dunno I would rather let the fools take responsibility for their bad decisions and not force the government intervene where there is no problem.

Nope. Banks are not. That's commercial structures.

If you have a national bank your banks are nationalized. Think about it who has the control of money? The central bank, what can the other banks possibly do when they do not even own the money they hold? They can ofcourse use dollars or some other foreign currency but in the end within the country they are owned by the central bank.

Dollar/euro, gold, stock papers (or whatever they are called).
Yep, money are property of national bank. So what?

Let's get back to the context here. You said one can control market without restricting anything. How is having no ability to own money not restricting people's ability to own money? After all how can you own a piece of paper that can at any time be made worthless by printing enough paper into national bank's account?

That's another reason why nobody holds any significant amount of national currency here, in Ukraine.

Speaking of non-restictive control: if there is not enough shiny blue rocks on the market, you still can lower it's value by providing shitload of them. See i hadn't even use word "money" here.

I think it's funny that people believe vaccines are a government conspiracy of some kind. These same retards would be the first ones bitching about a 'population control conspiracy' if there were not a vaccine. Idiots.
