Since I know we have a lot of aspiring artists on this forum;

If you think you can create a great avatar for general use by the community please give it a try!

It's preferable that you provide one avatar for each race if doing racial avatars. General Darkfall themed avatars are great as well.

Basic guidelines:
Must not be animated.
Must be themed with Darkfall in mind.
Must be 140x140 or smaller.

Submission: PM me with links to your material for consideration. All reasonable submissions will be considered for acceptance. All submissions will be subject to approval by no less than two members of the staff possibly including the Aventurine art director.

Don't post your work here and assume I'll see it.

This thread will not become a forum for "custom avatars should be allowed!" I'd rather not close it so people can use it to discuss the subject, so please do everyone a favor and don't derail it.

I have cut the weapons out of the main pic, but I think they have lost some of their glory in the downsize.

Some of the weapons are too tall so they ended up skinnier than the hammer, axe, and bow.

Actually, when I bought my digital camera a week or two ago it came with photo studio 5, so I have upgraded from MSPaint. :P

Now I have a limited ability to alter images besides cutting blocks out of them, which is helpful. :)

But anyway, tell me, are they worthy of avatar status?

You should make that Mahirim avatar with 2 of the ghost claws, it would look better. And maybe make the moon in the background a different color, it seems to blend with the wolf too much.

I like the Alfar and the Dwarf sigs, but can we get a different shield/background for the Ork avatar? Kind of looks like a cheap wooden buckler coupled with the Uber Battle Axe of Supreme Suffering. :)

I don't know, it doesn't look quite as cool as the other avatars. It doesn't seem very solid, but then again they are the "ghost claws"....

Perhaps try a full moon instead of a quarter moon, differing colors?

Allow me to throw my thoughts out and maybe you can put them into reality

The claws lack the clarity of the other weapons so work with that rather than against it.
They are ghost claws after all

I would suggest this since since the Mahirim are desert dwellers, full moon slightly obscured by a sand storm with the shadow of the ghost claws silhouetted.

Even simpler.. the ghost claws silhouetted against a full moon.. maybe attached to an arm.... or not

No Mahirim (or crappy Benishde knock off wolf with cheesy rudolf the chonically hemaroided reindeer eyes)in it at all.

Could add that sword maybe ? I like it a lot. It's simple and clean -totally human. The only problem I have with it is the fact that the shield is bulging at the sides, which gives it a cartoony feel. If you could make the shield a bit more realistic, and maybe a bit more knightly, we'd have a winner.

Cool Avatars, I especially like the last two Mahirim ones, the dwarven and alfar one; the Ork could probably use a different shield like someone suggested.

Thank you Darkmatter for making us some Mirdain ones :). Could you perhaps add more glow to the avatar though? And perhaps only one Bow (two seems like overkill.). Ooh, I'm not sure but those aren't the Sunbows are they? (they look more woody.) Great job though.

I'm still using the Sunbows, just leaving some of the sun out. Added some silvery pattern to the shield symbol. I left them bright still. Somehow its easier to see how they turn out after having tested them here. No problem, just tweaking and tuning like the rest of the people here. I can't hide the fact that these bows are Sunbows, so its probably better just to use them as intended. Edit: Yes two might be overkill, I rarely see archers with two bows hanging over their backs..

I could experiment further on the rather 'powerful' version of the Sunbow, maybe making it less dominant, but well, the crossed bows Lan pointed out aren't too bad. Maybe I should settle with that one as my contribution, even though they maybe aren't as magical looking as one could wish (then again that could be fixed within minutes).

As for the Lightbringer, can you guys bring out it's light and dark auras? It apparently has an aura based upon the alignment of it's wielder, and the original picture showed this on either side of the sword.

Either a quiver, or perhaps a small group(3?) connected in their center but spreading slightly apart towards the ends?(thinking similar to the arrows you see in the Eagle's grasp on US money and seals)

I think 3 sets submited and two chosen as new avatars would be good, that way people have a better choise as to what they want.

On submissions I'd like to be able to give credit where credit is due to people, it might be best if you guys choose a single person to submit the whole set of these avatars (I'm looking at Surly!) and put your nick in the photos title or some such thing.

However if you prefer to submit your own work then by all means do; just a suggestion for order and what have you.

I won't consider anything in this thread as being "submitted" so be sure to PM your work to me for consideration.

Great work, DM. I really like what you've done so far, especially the one with the vertical quiver. I'd suggest to work on the bowstring a bit, making it a bit thinner with a light glow.

Imo DarkMatter's and Surly's dwarf one are the best. And yeah Atnas, I can give it a go, but Surly already made a kickass one

It evolves I guess.

1) Changed the bundle of arrows following the quiver. Upgraded the arrow caliber. Placed and adjusted each individual arrow into the old quiver. Added extensions of the shield symbol to make more use of the space available. Tuned down the overall layer shadowing. Made the bowstring much thinner/lighter. Tuned down on the effects on the bow. And some minor alterations.

2) A step towards more clean/magical arrows. Added sized arrow on the bow, as the string is not tightened, the arrow 'lays' in place. Small illumination around each individual arrow in the avatar. Less on the arrows in the quiver.

Lightening up the arrows so that they are magical with regards to the Sunbow can be done in so many ways, so I guess its a matter of preferance. I did it rather quick this time. Only concern is that the avatar is starting to get crowded with layers/objects. Its near finished.

Great stuff!! Its a bit different setup than most of the other avatars, but different in a good way!

I love Metal Wolf's as well, but personally I think it might look better rotated like this:

Though, like Branny said, the more the merrier, so people could pick which rotation they liked best.

I don't have PS (let alone any skill with it) but with the first one here, you could maybe make the moon brighter and have the light coming from the top. That way you could have the shadows from the claws coming down on the surface of the moon. For the second one, perhaps tilt the claws a bit up (i.e. move the right claw a bit clockwise and the left counter-clockwise). Also - and this may be really hard to do in such a small space - it would look really nice to have the blades intermingled, where claw L1 is infront of claw R1, which is infront of L2, etc etc...

Anyway, just think it would look really cool that way; plus I have no leet PS skills, so I have to channel it through ya'll! :D :p

Yeah, on your background with the Ilshard/shield, lighten it up a bit so that those two elements don't disappear into the background, or perhaps add a glow of some sorts to bring them into the foreground . The Ilshard is a magical weapon so I think there are all sorts of possibilities there . Otherwise, its looking pretty good .

Tried taking away some of the 'feather end' of the arrow, not sure how it is compared to the other one, I tried to smooth it to blend it more into the frame. Smoothened out the black frame a bit, and put some highlight on the frame in the top right.

I have the same problem as Spinewire.. I can only select the old avatars, 3d banners and Muttman's avatars. The others aren't being displayed properly.

I tried IE6, IE7 and Firefox and it didn't help, so I'm guessing it's my monitor. I'm temporarily using a 15" 1024x768 monitor.

Most definitely , but I don't know what the color code is for that side of the forums, or how to check so I used the standard #333333 for the background, and thank you for the kudo .:)

If you have ever played a game called Soul Caliber for the PS II or X-box , the Sitha is the primary weapon of one of the female characters . It can be a sword, or as mentioned when a certain move is initiated, it gets whiplike qualities and does major damage . It does have a glow of sorts and its got that reach out and tag someone quality . If someone wants to google it , I'm sure that there are screenies to be used somewhere .

Elix Thank you , but I think as time goes on here and with new community members as well as existing ones the works are only going to get better . I think Avatars for stuff like Xmas, Easter ( Ork with bunny ears? ) or special Gaming events would be cool too . Thats up to the mods and devs though . I have some ideas for Mod/Dev "Stamps" from my old days as a Mod .

Basicly, my idea was that we all shape our characters and they are defined through us. The Mirdain character, shape and form, without the skin, without the personality, which is supposedly filled in by us the player, which again leaves yes, the Mirdain character template. Attempted to portray such a template. I added the leaf symbol found on the Mirdain avatarflag, along with the center symbolic silver Arrow tip. Thoughts?

On the forum side , maybe it needs to be a bit more literal . Not a lot, but maybe bring the Mirdain figure more forward or define an edge or two to make the figure more distinctive . Thank you for the constructive feedback. Its still just an idea i'm exploring though. What I did now, was increasing layer contrast, then I halfed the face in two, and stuck a mirdain face in there just enough so that its easy to spot what race it is, while the other half of the face remains the 'template'. Then I lifted the render structure a bit from the layer, and I thought that the one shoulder had contours of a shoulder pad, or at least it would be suitable for one there. So I tried pumping more into the shoulder to make the impression of a shoulder pad, as a part of a racial armor or similar. I think this is too 'special' to be used, but fun either way.

Mirdain are elves afterall, Mirendil has some of the better vegitation :) There are no 'flowers' on there. Plants, forest, and a sun ray that casts a shadow pattern through the leaves onto the helmets.

As can be seen we've adopted Darkmatter's avatar style for the time being.

But if you submitted a staff avatar don't dispair! We'll probably use it eventually as the plan is to rotate things around every few months or so to keep a variety up.

Want to make staff avatars and get them used? Gotta have unifomity! Please make one avatar for each facet of the staff if you do decide to do anything like that. (The developers are also sporting Darkmatter's avatar right now.)

This is what I got right now, I'm using Gunthern TheBlack's design along with Metal Wolf's Moon, I still want to round out the moon a little, put some shadows in, and than do a glow effect of the claws, but I've been stuck in jury duty so it might have to wait a little longer. There is no need now, just something I wanted to do, I'm thinking I'll start on the shadow chain next. Plus the original reason I started on this was because I wanted to add the ghost effect to the end of the claws.

I think it has something to do with the work itself, people enjoy doing it. Than they get to see people using it, which is another plus, because someone liked what you did. And plus the only way to become better at it is to practice, and why not have a goal in mind when your doing it. It helps channel that energy.
Overall it's fun.
