WTB someone to continously harass the forums to make things better for RP'ers (i.e. a togglable chat bubble option, easier emote system etc).

RP will never take off in DF unless more voice their opinions on what we need on it, sure RPers aint a huge chunk of the population but DF would do good catering for all.

I think your best option is to start up a fansite for Darkfall role players and then organize events. That's what happened in Richard Garriott's Tabula Rasa. It was extremely successful and helped spawn an entire community of fansites and role players.

The sad part is, it really is only a simple chat bubble that restrains people from doing any RP at all in DF - I along with many others I knew just couldnt do it via a chat window, it just doesnt "feel" right for RP and there is no immersion what so ever.

Events and such will make no difference until the devs add a few tiny features into it.

i have had a simaler idea. say you have a mic and you want to talk to someone in-game but u dont want to use vent. how about maiking it so anyone within 20 meters could hear whatever you are saying and maybe make it so if u press a button u shout increasing that distance to 100meters where how cool would it be if u could sneak up to 2 people talking about (lets say a raid) and u could sneak up close enough to evesdrop on there conversastion without being detected.:ninja: although if thet were smart they would just pop in vent.... i think they should definetly implement something like this

because i as a example never cheack if there is something written in public chat

In that tabb you could then chose to let others see your chat bubbles.
Those that want to RP with others would have it on, and others would atleast have General Tab open and see when people write to them, in comparison to the current system where people just can't keep track of all the tabbs, especially when they don't give a reply or new "whisper" sound away.


For RP purpose more Emotes are necessary.
And also, more benefits of staying blue, so that people that chose to RP on an area where they might be jumped, have a little hope of not being so, due to the fact that people feel, it's not worth it, I'l go red.


At the moment there are plenty of areas to RP, and also plenty of opportunities to take to do it, but the risk of being killed while out, and the time it take to get back, fun if you stand there with your fishing rod and get jumped by a guy that kill you just for the lulz.



But most importantly a General Tabb where every important information, such as System ( without the damage part ), Clan, Party, Public and Tell, is written.
That way you can hide System if you like, and just rely on general tabb for the most, and pick clan if you want "history" Party for history or tell for history.

A small bip that come after getting a new tell in a closed tell tabb.


And a choice to let others see your chat bubble, and a choice in GUI to not view any chat bubbles at all.

Dang you know what this would do if you got a down right serious roleplayer and like personal merchant vending system like setting up your own shop with a caravan or something. They would have a recording thing where they shout out all this stuff, even though it would be rare for someone to take stuff into roleplaying by voice, also it would be so awesome with the few you found. Then again you would have the people that would make you wish this system never even was thought up, where they annoy you to the point of running off and waiting for them to leave the city so you can kill them or something. Then the 14 year old merchants would kill the phrases from diablo and resident evil 4, "Stay A While and Listen!" or "What are ya buyin?"

Even worse, people that record annoying things would be running around playing it, like rick astley or some other stupid annoying crap. There better be a button to press that instantly turns off someones recording if this shows up in anygame what so ever.

AKA you can hear people's voices as they correspond with their player's location in the game. This should at least be implemented on the party level.

Our clan is building a city similar to Freehold on Na1 And have 3 clans at the moment living there in a light RP environment problem is the mechanics of cities make it very difficult I wish there were more assignable freedomes or the ability to host multiple clans at a city. Darkfall's implementation of stealth requires players to maneuver themselves without being seen. Chat bubbles would be horrible for this if you accidently type in public instead of a PM window, and it would also make people extremely easy to find and kill. It really just doesn't seem to fit.

Furthermore, creating a graphic on-screen just for people talking is going to be horrible for Darkfall when the game is based around large scale combat with hundreds of players on the screen at once. I am willing to bet all the gold I have that the losing side will simply start spamming this new "chat bubble" option non-stop; so much spam, plus the already taxed systems, will result in increased latency and degraded system performance.

Chat bubbles are fluff, they are not required.
This sort of fluff is not worth the trade-offs, and simply because it has been in other games does not justify it being here. Darkfall is an MMORPG, yes, not an MMOCBTG (Massively Multiplayer Online Chat Box Talking Game.) RPG does not always = pretty chat boxes ala SWG.

Also -- Immersion? Really? I don't know about you, but any sort of "immersion" you think you'll gain by this is misplaced; the Darkfall community is probably 1% roleplayer, 49% e-thug, 49% griefer, 1% nice guy. If nothing else, people will just use this tool to blow up your RP tea parties right before they kill you. Communication could improve, yes, but "chat bubbles" aren't the way.

My Grandma and I have been fighting for 3 days ! I live with her so it's hard to treat her with A LOT of respect. I treat her as if she were my mom. I'm 16 in june and she's I think 56 or something.

Then today I woke up at 8:30 and had to go to school at 9:30 for physical testing. So she started yelling at me cause I wasn't up early enough but my school's only 10 minutes away and I only take about 10 minutes to be ready. Then she said "Your phones gone and computer" out of the blue again !!!

Then I called my mom and while I was on the phone she heard my grandma come in and yell at me so she called her. Then she left me alone, it was a nice 1 hour of peace !

We had to go to Ikea to get a table and we were fine it was my her and my grandpa. Then he leaves and we go get me a table thing for my bathroom cause we live in a small apartment.

So I picked one out and it was $30.-
and she wanted to spend $20.-
So I told her I'll give you $10.- (that's all I have all in change too)

That is a VERY happy 1/4th of the population for something that has no effect on the other 3/4ths and would take seconds to include.

Chat bubbles would develop into a dedicated RP community full of RP-sheep for you wolves to kill mixed in with competent players who like the mature aspects it enforces.

Just yesterday I took 10 Yewians on cadence marching through Mercia... we spammed public like no tomorrow. Was a great deal of fun, but the immersion was very difficult to grasp in a scrolling text box. Chat bubbles would have been epic as you saw 10 guys bubbling it up in a long column march.

Even if most of the community thinks doing something like the above is stupid, it still creates "fun".. even if it involves nuking the column full of RP newbz. They carry on the story and it makes Darkfall more memorable.

DF wants and needs chat bubbles, the stubborn simply don't realize it.

As a quick short term solution why not give players the ability to create their own chat channel tabs. It would work the same as group except there would be no maximum # of players allowed. There could be password settings or "moderator invite" only settings.

This feature would also benefit non rpers for sieges where you need to cooperate with mercs that you are not neccessarily aligned with. We have all been stuck on sieges waiting for one or two people to relay the important information.

We’re considering them but for now there are no plans to add chat bubbles. It’s not a technical challenge; our issue with chat bubbles has to do with gameplay. If we did implement them, they would be opt-in both ways and they would be as Darkfall friendly as possible. We would rather improve communications without having to use them but we’re not ruling them out either.


My question to Aventurine is, if you're trying to avoid chat bubbles, which most roleplayers (and many non-roleplayers) I think I can say, view as the most practical solution to the horribly un-immersive Public chat problem, then what other solutions are you considering? I understand there's more to factor in with chat bubbles than most might think, but something needs to be done with Public chat to make it more immersive and practical/useful.

This lack of immersive and useful local chat, I personally think, is one of the major blockades to roleplaying in Darkfall.

I'll continue to suggest at the very least that you do add in this idea where when a player is talking in Public chat, their character makes nonsense, grunting/mumbling sounds and makes a chatting gesture animation. I think that this would be a first step in the right direction because at least when a player is talking in Public, people standing right around recognize it, which makes roleplaying situations a lot more practical. I still think chat bubbles are the best solution to the problem, and think chat bubbles would go perfectly with this mumbling/animation idea, but like I said, just this mumbling/animation idea would be a great step in the right direction.

People don't communicate out side of Clan/Vent in Darfall. Public chat lacks immersion because your speaking to everyone in the zone and barely anyone even looks at it.

Easy example, trying to say hello to someone passing by in public chat:
You: "Hi"
Dude1: "Hey!"
Dude2: "Hello"
Dude passing by: Doesn't even see your message because he's in a different tab.

The first question I asked in Race Alliance when I started was, "How do I talk to people around me?". I was pointed towards the public chat tab and I was immediatly dissapointed, I knew before I'd used it that it was going to be a shit system.

Chat bubbles/floating text is the only practical solution that comes to mind and I'm not convinced at all by the arguments against it. "Chat bubbles give your position away". So what? Make them have a short visibility range and if you really wanted your position concealed you wouldn't be typing in local chat. I AM convinced that chat bubbles would be quickly adopted as the primary means of communication outside of clan chat. It is so bad at the moment that Darkfall easily takes the award for the worlds most anti-social MMO of all time.

Before we even start thinking about RP, people need to be able to communicate with each other in game in an effective an intuitive way.

And imo, it's even MORE realistic that chat bubbles would give your position away if you're fairly close. If you talk at normal sound level when someone's fairly close to you, they'll hear you and then go wtfpwn you. Imo, as long as they had a pretty short range for actually appearing, (about what it would be to hear someone talking at normal voice level,) they'd be fine. In UO for instance, if you're hiding and you talk, you appear and everyone sees your text. Darkfall is a little different due to true stealth, but all I'm saying is it only makes sense that your position would be likely to be compromised if you're talking.
