Friendly fire is great :) You can now torch that dwarven ally of yours and say "Sorry, it was accidental friendly fire."
Also, the article says: "absence of height maps". I don't know what that tells you, but no height maps = full height-axis. They could make an island floating in mid-air above the ground, or a cave could be exactly below where you stand, making it possible to find a hole and just fall inside it.

I think the cross charicter penalty is a little hash on people who want to play as a good guy some times and a basterd others. It wont bother me much as I rarly play but one charicter, but it will suck to roll up a noob and have a huge neative alignment on him the moment he goes into the game. I could see two charicters in the same guild on an account sharing alignment but to unrelated charicters sharing alighment limits playstyles.
And whats with the cannons? Are we going to have Midevil Sieges instead of Darkage sieges now? or are cannons a coastle only thing? I'm gona miss my trebs.
I do like the architecture though.

The cannons have me wondering as well. I was anticipating it to be much more strictly along the lines of "no, no dwarves with guns"... Even the crudest early cannons were superior to trebuchets in everything except cost and mobility. I wonder how that will sway things during sieges.

yah, only thing out of all that I didn't like was the aligment among all your characters...I want to be able to have my miner and fisher and such not be affected if I wanna be a dick once in a while
although this may discourage ganking a bit, just curb it a touch

Actually, when I read this bit I said to Lia, hey thats a clever idea, and thats exactly what it is. No more fueling your mindless noob murderer character using alts, if you want to play the evil noob killing bastard than you'd better make sure you can deal with the consequences.
No more jumping on your alt knowing that those same people you've been messing around are going to just sit their and let you farm freely, they can kill you without an alignment hit.
One way around this could be to get a second account, but thats not so bad, only the serious murderers may consider this option, not the wannabe greifers who just want some quick thrills.

Having reputation affect all chars will also help give a better feel of "real life" law.
Being a murderer will have consequenses.
It will give a MUCH better roleplaying experience.

I'd rather ships stick with balistae/trebuchet/catapult variants mounted on them like the romans had, instead of cannons!! (same goes for stationary defenses)

Personally I think having the alignment hit all characters is a step in the right direction. I have said for awhile that we will never be able to have true player justice until the evil PKer can no longer switch to his goody goody crafter alt to hide from the mob. I wasn't quite expecting to see it in DFO though.
It does hamper player style a bit I will admit, it will force you to be evil or good, or somewhere inbetween maybe. But as Gunther put it, "it will seperate the men from the boys."

I like this idea... holds the player accountable. No more hiding behind alts. Im assuming that your chars on a different server would be fine... so make your candy canes elsewhere.

Of course, everyone gets hyped, but the interview says nothing new about the game. Just a few updates on things we already knew.
Things to note: Cannons. Now it takes 4-5 noobs to kill a vet instead of 3 noobs, which is bad. Somebody is paying to make Aventurine t-shirts. Alignment goes across characters. Need teamwork for boats.
Screenshots look nice.

Will walls and structures have hp and just vanish when its depleted, or do you think we'll see parts of these structures blown to pieces until it doesn't serve any purpose? I'm thinking about what will happen to an archer in a tower, if the tower gets struck by a few cannons.
Cannons effectivity vs troops is an interesting discussion versus their anti-vehicle(siege weaponry,ships) capabilities.

Medieval artillery is so funnier IMO
I find the pictures cool(except for the cannons, I expected ballistae and mangonnels), but I guess many will disagree about that.

Looks good. Woke up this morning, and had a link to it from MMORPG in my email. Nice to wake up to. I have to say I support the idea of alignment effecting all of your characters. Can't have those wanker griefers running around then just hopping on another character when things get too tough for them.
I thought the screen shots looked great, give or take the one of the armored guy, he was looking a bit pixelated. Swamp screenshot was pretty phat though.

I just wish they had a booth at H3 or E3 or whatever its called. I don't live that Far from L.A. Would of been a nice vacation... Couple hours, and "would" of been camping in front of there booth.

Accountability creates way better playing experience.

I am going go go against a great deal of people here and agree with few that the alignment system sounds like a refreshing change to me.
I personally think it's a great idea with that alignment hit.
If you worry about your crafter or whatnot - buy a second account.
If you enjoy griefing and rpk then don't hide behind a second char.
Can't hide much longer behind pixels :p

You can get printable cds and print directly on them with a $90 inkjet printer these days. I have one, and when done right it's almost indistinguishable from the real thing. (the paper envelope is kinda suspect, too.)
In fact, if you look close you'll see the background of the disc is white, just like on a printable disc or label.

We'll, news of any kind is good news when it comes to this game.
However, I am concerned with two things from this news.
1) If you have a evil character, and then create a new character, following the logic of the devs, the new character would then be considered evil as well. However, newbie starting spots were said to of been heavily guarded by npcs, so does that mean as soon as a "evil" person makes a new character, they essentially get insta killed?
2) In shadowbane, there was always a problem with one spy in your guild being the result of a guild's downfall (whether it was opening doors, attacking others in guild or attacking guards). Will the whole "accountability" thing take those situations into consideration as well? (I don't want 1 spy in my guild that can essentially destroy my town, or be a huge factor in getting my town destroyed.) The only thing I can think of would be to have every character of yours to be added to the guild. Or have guards attack people that do harm to other guildmates, or structures/other guards.
Other then that, great read!! I admit, trebs would of looked kinda goofy on ships. This has really gotten me thinking of all the different type of defences a city can/will have (like cannons being a good defense against infantry, or just archers as main defense). Anywho, I look forward to more information and hopefully a close beta!!

Being a spy should be a legit part of the game. In an open game you can do anything... If 1 spy can take down your city, all the more power to him.
You just need to do the appropriate leg work of recruiting reliable people

Glad to hear about the reputation thing as usualy it is so easy to get around acountability with alts. I know it will still be posible to go around it with a second acount but its still a good step.
As for the cannons i like them, naval combat wouldnt be as good without being able to broardside another ship with a nice row of cannons.

The scale of the ripples in the water is BANG ON! Nice work there :D
Everything looks crisp and its amazing to see a lot of the fine detail in armor and things like the side of the cannons.
One thing I did notice I thought was a bit odd. Plants (exp grass and flowers) grow straight up even if they are growing on a slope. Its one of those things a lot of people wont be able to put their finger on right away, but it will make them feel uneasy.

but then you have less trade, it's harder to establish that city, and any others.
you cant carry a mine on your back in DF.
you need a ship or wagons to move enough stone to make a house, let alone a city, far away from a mine.
and ships are faster
and if you want to carry some treasure on them to help jumpstart your city then i really hope it doesn't get "LOST" at sea.

...with this freedom comes responsibility...We sure don't see this basic truth stated very often. Usually it's the griefer/kid types demanding freedom while doing all they can to avoid accepting responsibility.

I recall the devs saying there would be an evil town or even evil towns so that evil people who didnt have a house/guild would still have somewhere to start, i guess if you start a noob evil character, you'll be starting in an evil town.

If someone has naval supremacy, its going to be quite hard to take them out. Cities or guilds with huge fleets can sweep the shores of settlements across continents, and prove a valuable asset through siege bombardment - where as buildings belonging to a clanstone will have the protection, the troops on the walls and so forth will not.

Hmm somehow I can't view the interview on my computer but I looked it up on another and are those gray buildings on one of the screenshots Alfar houses!? I pray to all kinds of gods that they are because they look AWESOME!

only thing i have now learned after reading this article, is the fact that all characters share the same alignment within an account... the rest i already knew unfortunately.
however, it is nice to know that all characters will share alignment because now if you wanna be a dick, ur gonna be stuck being a dick... i know im gonna be a dick.

No one seems to see the aspect of racial wars. If i wanna kill a miner or sth like that i go to a enemy Race mine and bash the hell out of them. This way i might even get rewarded (alignment, honor, what ever) because its the enemy race.
Why should i bother pking my own race?
Beeing "red" in my Lands and beeing in a foreign land shouldn't be too different, everyone's gonna try to kill you.
I see the problem beeing a craftsman with a profession out of town. A raiding enemy will kill you in matter of seconds without any penalty.
And please dont tell me that the community will handle this. I wouldn't guard a Mine for 3 hours because there could be enemys comming and kill my races miners, i'd rather go to a well known pvp spot where action is guaranteed.

Woot, for new interview with more information. And here I was worried that Darkfall wouldn't get as much publicity in E3 as I thought they needed. =]
Yay!!! Ah, but the shared alignment thing could be advantages. I could have two characters one very good, and one very bad. And they would come out to be neutral eh?

Wow... nice update. Its great to come back from vacation to see this. To those that say there isn't any new info here, well, you're dead wrong.
1) Cannons are in!!! (Yarrr, no farrie trebs on dis scurvy dog's deck)
2) Alignment effects all your characters on the same server. (good shit, IMHO. No more pansy PKs logging onto their alts to hide like the 14-year-old bitches they are. If you wanna be an RPK then you're goign to have to learn how to take a smack down now and again.)
3) Weather forcasting. (Very nice touch. Its been speculated about on the boards a whole lot, but no "official" mention has ever been made to my knowledge.)
4) Large ships will require more than one person to run properly/well. (THANK FUCKING GOD!!! Before this all we'd heard was that it wasn't "fun" to make sailing require multiple people, which I can understand, but I wasn't exactly enthusiastic about it. However, this is really great news. Now if we can just learn about ship binding... )

Ahh, so this is why I hang out on these forums. I almost forgot, for a second there.
The prospect of naval battles as represented in the screenshots is so damn exciting. Screw Pirates of the Burning Sea and their watered down instanced crap -- looks like Darkfall will be delivering the sea-faring delights I have been thirsting for.
Graphic detail and quality -- unsurprisingly at this point -- are not particularly noteworthy. The attention to detail, however, and graphical styling are compelling. Especially in that human city. That was a scene straight out of a fairy tale.
Very nice little scrap for the starving, thanks guys.

This is a misquote. One character's alignment will not affect another character's on the same account.
